AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Writer J. Michael Straczynski Returning To Marvel Comics For New CAPTAIN AMERICA Series

Marvel Comics has announced that Amazing Spider-Man and Thor writer J. Michael Straczynski is making his long-awaited return to this world for a brand new Captain America series alongside artist Jesús Saiz.

J. Michael Straczynski is rightly considered one of the greatest Amazing Spider-Man writers of all time, though his run on the series was largely overshadowed by "One More Day."

The controversial storyline, forced on the scribe by then-Marvel Comics EIC Joe Quesada, saw Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane end after a literal deal with the devil. For many fans, that remains one of the worst creative decisions ever made, but Straczynski is still an all-time great.

After all, his work on Thor heavily inspired the version of the God of Thunder we've seen in the MCU and he even worked on the 2011 movie's story.

Now, Straczynski is returning to Marvel Comics for Captain America #1 this September! Alongside superstar artist Jesús Saiz (Doctor Strange), it's said the talented duo is ready to take Steve Rogers on an exhilarating new adventure.

Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost.

Straczynski says, "Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before."

"If folks like what I did with Peter in Amazing Spider-Man, and Thor in, well...Thor, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!"

We're certainly intrigued to see where the writer is going to take Steve Rogers, though it sounds like he has ambitious plans for the iconic hero. For now, you can check out the cover by Jesús Saiz below.

Stay tuned for more on this new Captain America series as we have it!

I love his Marvel work. Supreme Power is a favorite of mine. His Thor run was enjoyable, Silver Surfer Requiem is good. His Spidey run is probably the best Spidey run of the modern era (in the main universe). This is good news.

Super underrated writer, when it comes to Spider-Man. Sure, the Spider-Totem thing was understandably controversial (and no future writer knew what to do with it) and two stories that are considered the worst of Spider-Man came from his run, but dang, no one could write adult and married Peter Parker better than him (Peter as a teacher should be the status-quo for the character!), and "The Conversation" is up there as one of the best "hero's loved one finds out their secret" stories.

Sins Past and One More Day were Quesada's ideas not JMS'.

@soberchimera - not exactly. Quesada said no to the twins being Peter's kids, so he changed it to Norman.
