J. Michael Straczynski is rightly considered one of the greatest Amazing Spider-Man writers of all time, though his run on the series was largely overshadowed by "One More Day."
The controversial storyline, forced on the scribe by then-Marvel Comics EIC Joe Quesada, saw Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane end after a literal deal with the devil. For many fans, that remains one of the worst creative decisions ever made, but Straczynski is still an all-time great.
After all, his work on Thor heavily inspired the version of the God of Thunder we've seen in the MCU and he even worked on the 2011 movie's story.
Now, Straczynski is returning to Marvel Comics for Captain America #1 this September! Alongside superstar artist Jesús Saiz (Doctor Strange), it's said the talented duo is ready to take Steve Rogers on an exhilarating new adventure.
Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost.
Straczynski says, "Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before."
"If folks like what I did with Peter in Amazing Spider-Man, and Thor in, well...Thor, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!"
We're certainly intrigued to see where the writer is going to take Steve Rogers, though it sounds like he has ambitious plans for the iconic hero. For now, you can check out the cover by Jesús Saiz below.
Stay tuned for more on this new Captain America series as we have it!
