COMICS: AVENGERS VS. X-MEN Will NOT Lead To A Relaunch Of The Marvel Universe

Some have speculated that Avengers Vs. X-Men will result in some sort of "The New 52" style reboot of the Marvel Universe. Well, think again! Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso teases the impact the event will have on the future of their titles.

The past ten years or so has seen The Avengers disassemble, the wiping out of nearly the entire mutant race, a Civil War between the superheroes, a Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn's Dark Reign, and the superheroes reassembling to take on him and later Fear Itself. These stories have all been connected and there has been plenty going on with the X-Men too. Now that all comes to a head with Avengers Vs. X-Men.

"We have some moves planned," teases Axel Alonso in an interview with Newsarama. "The Marvel Universe is changed by AvX. It is not a reboot or a retcon. It is the Marvel Universe that you grew up in. But this story in many ways sort of serves as an endcap to a decade's worth of stories that we've been telling, and I think it begins a great first chapter for the next decade's worth of stories we're going to tell."

He adds, "I'm very excited about what we're doing. We had a fantastic summit. Some long-running creative shifts are occurring — you've heard about Brian, for instance; there may be others. We're very excited about where we're headed." Be sure to click on the link below to read the interview in full.

Thank goodness. I've enjoyed what I've read of DC's New 52,but Marvel doesn't need a new take on things. That's what the Ultimate universe is for and so far both Ultimate Spider-man and Ultimate X-men are pretty good.

Thats what they said about Siege. "END OF AN ERA" and all that.

Good call asterisk. I got my hands (and eyes!) on every important marvel comic from disassembled to siege and a ton in between. I haven't really picked up anything current save for fraction's Thor but siege felt like an end for me, maybe after avx I can hop on again.

Who ever thought MARVEL was doing that is honestly stupid. Marvel does not need to do a reboot, their comics are doing just fine.

why not continue the regular universe but reboot the ultimate every 10 or 15 years

I would deem the past ten years the Brian Michael Bendis era, he's been in everything the past decade, ever since his debut in Ultimate Spider man.

After the success of the recent movie, not a chance in Hell. I understand that the comic sales have lagged behind DC a bit after their silly "soft reboot", whatever the heck that means, but with all eyes on them from this mainstream popularity they're enjoying, it wouldn't be in their best interests to do so. DC did theirs for a reason. Marvel has no such reason, and if they did so it would only be pretentious.

His comment can be applied to every Marvel event in recent memory.

It's very obvious we'll be seeing some changes among the comics after AVX. You can't bring Hope, The Phoenix, and Scarlett Witch together and expect things to go back to normal. Wouldn't surprise me if the effects of M day get reversed or something similar.

Also Bendis leaving the Avengers is another sign that well be seeing something different from that line as well.

@marvel72 unfortunately remender is leaving venom after this arc, and Cullen Bunn (spelling?) is replacing him

Perhaps it means no more big event after big event? I hope so, because I dropped these books due to event fatigue. I miss the novelty of character crossovers.

But I'd find it funny if it did...

I need to get back into Amazing Spider-Man before the ASM movie comes out...

"It is the Marvel Universe that you grew up in."

PHEW! And here I thought the 'new' Nick Fury was a pathetically contrived, thinly veiled attempt to cash in on the movie buzz at the expense of a beloved character who's been around since Marvel's infancy...

I love the John Byrne and Jim Lee X-Men of old, now I don't know sh*t about who's in the team or not because it became so complicated that I don't want to buy a monthly anymore.

When he says this is a new chapter for the next 10 years, does it mean it is a good jumping on point? I wanted to get into marvel, but never did cause of everything continuity wise (which is why I am a DC fan cause of the reboot.)

I stopped reading Marvel during the 90's (yes, I'm old) right after The Age of Apocalypse. There are so many classic story lines during the late 80's and early 90's that I will always hold dear. I haven't found a suitable jumping on point to start reading again. This is why I enjoy the MCU, it reminds me why I loved the characters so much when I was young, I can't say the same about the Marvel comic universe nowadays.

maybe... it leads to TWO relaunches?!
