COMICS: Captain Marvel Back From The Dead In AVENGERS VS. X-MEN Tie-In

In 1982, the Marvel Universe mourned as Captain Marvel died. Since then, many other heroes have used the name and we've been teased more than once with a potential return of the popular hero who was originally created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. Well, after a Skrull imposter recently passed on the mantle to Noh-Varr (who is now calling himself The Protector and can be seen also on the cover below) it appears as if the real deal is finally making his return. The question which now remains is whether this is in fact Mar-Vell or someone altogether new...

•Captain Marvel reborn to unite all Kree!
• Captain Marvel, The Protector and Ms. Marvel vs The Avengers!
• Who is Minister Marvel and why has he drawn the Phoenix to the Kree homeworld?

This issue has officially convinced me to buy this series. Ironic, how I have been complaining about how stupid X vs A idea was.

Oh what a surprise, Marvel resurrects THEIR version of "Captain Marvel" after DC announces their plans to bring the REAL Captain Marvel into the new DCU, thus railroading them legally into permanently renaming him Shazam. :(

I find it more interesting that Marvel revives him just in time for a major film featuring ALIENS!

Captain Marvel is the Big Red cheese. End of story. This pretender is some cheap knockoff superhero who couldn't even beat cancer. Seriously? Some morose dickbag wrote a superhero who died of Cancer...I thought comics were supposed to be escapism. Imagine some kid who lost a family member to cancer picking up a good old comic book and reading this crap? Smh.

For some reason I could never really get into Mar-Vell's Captain Marvel. I thought Genis-Vell's version was a lot cooler IMO.

Especially since it was rumored that a certain relatively unknown actor would be portraying him in the film over a year ago. Curious er and curious er.

Not sure I like this. Captain Marvel's death was a very significant event in the Marvel comics mythos because of the way he died. Superheroes getting Cancer is a big deal because it establishes them as vulnerable and human. Marvel's whole thing is about making characters that people can relate to and this pretty much kicks that ideal in the stones. They've taken him from being the perfect example of their philosophy about bringing superheroes down to earth and turning him in to just another resserection cliche.

Cool but I guess no one is safe from the dead anymore.
I thought just because he died of cancer they would leave him dead as respect. But Having lost a close family member to cancer I look at this as a big [frick] you to cancer patience and family.
it's different from a hero drying in a cosmic fight or some fantastic thing, but when they ground it with real things like cancer.

QUESTION!
If Nolan would direct a Marvel Studios movie, what super hero do you think would fit better in his style? Just curious!

Jesus Christ.

As a HUGE fan of both Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) and Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), I can say that the bickering over a potential Mar-Vell return done just to spite DC is ridiculous as hell. DC has since accepted the fact that they'll refer their Cap as Shazam and it's high time everyone else does. The new interpretation of DC's character will be referred to exclusively as Shazam by Geoff Johns; that was announced way before this was.

Assuming that this is, finally, the real deal and not a Skrull, evil version from the Cancerverse, or someone else adopting the identity (Hulking, Mar-Vell's son, had a costume eeriely similar to this in a possible future), I will be happy. I think bringing back Mar-Vell for good would be great.

@Hawksblueeyes

I thought that the unknown actor (Kevin Pennington or something?) was supposedly portraying SHIELD Agent Wendell Vaughn? AKA Quasar, not Captain Marvel?

We've been teased during Civil War with the Skrull, Thanos Imperative with an evil version from a nightmarish Cthulu-like infested universe, and Chaos War with the real deal who died again almost right away.

I think a revival, if done right (key word) can both be spectacular and respect his death in the first place. Hell, look at Bucky Barnes, one of the "must stay dead" characters for decades. His revival was handled PHENOMENALLY and he's since become one of the more popular and well written characters of the decade, both as Winter Soldier and as Captain America.

Death means nothing. That's no moon. There's a glitch in the matrix. There is no spoon. The cake is a lie. Up is down, left is right. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, MASS HYSTERIA!

Little known fact...Dusto doesn't actually have a Rascal. Those wheels magically pop out of his ass in times of severe stress (like when he runs out of Bud Lite) and propel him to the nearest liquor store.

And once again Marvel makes a new Captain Marvel series because... they want to keep the name license of Captain Marvel so DC can never have it.

Can't we just all get a long and have both titles named Captain Marvel?
luckylu
luckylu - 2/8/2012, 11:21 AM
@inturder- no i totally agree i should have worded it better. i thought this was the one hero who would stay dead unlike pretty much ever other character that died. im 50/50 with this. glad one of my favorite heros is back but just like nomis said the other half of me feels like it might have cheapened the story of his death which is possibly ranked right under the infinity gauntlet for my favorite stories.

@johnfinley - Why would DC have to permanently change their Capt Marvel to Shazam? Shazam was created long before the Mar-Vell Capt Marvel. And for the record I am more of a Shazam fan than a Mar-vell fan despite being more of a Marvel fan over DC.
