Marvel's "What If?" series of comic books have always offered an interesting twist on well-known storylines, although the last couple of waves took a real drop in quality. That's probably why we haven't seen them for the last few years, but Axel Alonso has now confirmed (in an interview with Comic Book Resources) that the publisher will be bringing the "What If?" line back for a four part special based on the Avengers Vs. X-Men event this July. Below are comments from the E-i-C.

"[If] you've ever wondered what might have happened if the Phoenix Force had found a different host than Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor and Colossus in last year's biggest super hero event, then you'll want to read "What If? Avengers Vs. X-Men," a 4-issue limited series, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Jorge Molina that ships weekly this July. I don't want to give too much away about the story, but let's just say that things might have gone a lot differently if Magneto had taken a stronger hand in determining Hope's fate."

Well, for [frick]s sake guys if you don't like it then don't read it. But clearly Marvel did the research to find that many people did like the event, and so they are publishing these 4 what if books.

This event further cemented why the majority of modern Big Two comics will forever stink.

Glad to see that what if is back after that abomination that was what if siege. Shame they never did what if war of kings what if realm of kings what if chaos war what if thanos imperative what if x-men second coming what if doom war what if world war hulks what if shadowland what if age of x what if fear itself what if spider island etc probably because of what if siege.

O. The other hand I wish they would let this event die so i can forget about the heAD numbing apologetic cyclops was right religious cult brigade that reigned in terror during and shortly after this event.

Marvel is trying to squeeze out as much money as they can from AvX and I mean to the last drop.

Why, exactly, is this necessary?

@Battabing : Because "What-If"comics series offers a different point of view on a story and some "What-If ?" are really good like "What If Wolverine was father of Daken ?" . People tends to underestimate them .

It'd be more fun to see if the Avengers got possessed by the Phoenix Force!

As usual, they run out of ideas and instead of making a bunch of new what-if's for various stories they make four of the same one. 1st of all, this event was so stupid. 2nd, these had better be good than the last batch of what-if's. Third, I probably will forget about this anyway.

interesting that Wolverine has his claws pointed at his team that he is a teacher at. Can't see Magneto doing a better job but love to see him as Dark Phoenix.

Again, I liked the Concept of the story.

With all the power in the universe, someone decided to actually try to save the people of the regular world.

Come on, when has anybody ever tried to give the world free food, clean water, free electricity and no more missiles? Great idea.

Also, the event was important so Hope could finally save mutant kind. Years of lead up, it had to go somewhere.

And now with new mutants, they have a chance.

MY "What if" story would be, What if every human had a X gene and eventually everybody was HOMO SUPERIOR and had free food, water, power and no war. Could you imagine??? No more bigotry? Everyone had an amazing power? I want to see THAT alternate time line.

I'm guessing Cyclops won't become a cult leader in this.
