COMICS: Marvel Reveals THE FIRST X-MEN; The Team Founded By...Wolverine?!

Did you think that Charles Xavier founded the first team of mutants? Did you think that Giant Size X-Men #1 was the first time he and Wolverine met? How about Magneto? Well, think again! Marvel has revealed their plans for a new series which rewrites history.

A new five issue limited series this August will reveal that it was in fact Wolverine who assembled the first team of mutants in the Marvel Universe. Written by Christos Gage and with art from Neal Adams, The First X-Men takes place before X-Men #1 and it sees Logan attempt to recruit both Xavier (who turns him down) AND Magneto to his team. Rather than a school, Logan will put together a team of soldiers which includes Sabretooth, Magneto, Bomb and a new female character. The series is set firmly in continuity and will feature a cameo from Namor the Sub-Mariner before he regained his memory in the pages of Fantastic Four. So, the first mutant team was put together by Wolverine (who Adams strongly hinted funded the X-Men). And who said Marvel was running out of ideas? Oh...

Or, to spin it another way...

From their "Next Big Thing" Liveblog:

"At the beginning, Stan and Jack were experimenting. You had Professor X, bald and in a wheelchair. These strange kids already in costume. It seems to me like this was not the beginning of the story, but the middle." -Neal Adams

"Of all the mutants on Earth, Professor X could easily pass as a human. Why would he want to get involved in this? Maybe all this was going on before Professor X was Professor X...when Professor X was a teenager. Maybe mutant kids were getting abused by the military, by the government. Somebody would have been looking out for them, but maybe that person came to Charles Xavier, realizing he couldn't protect these kids. That was my pitch." -Neal Adams

"In those early X-Men stories, everybody hates and fears them, but we never really know why. It's so core to the concept, but it was there before the series started. Here we found out why mutants are so hated and feared in a way that is different from any other super heroes." -Nick Lowe

Wolvie is my favorite character (after Thanos, of course) but seriously? No. Him getting his own school was good. It shows how he has grown as a character, but to learn he started the whole damn thing? Weak.

Lulz, just another move in Marvel's slow but certain effort to make Wolverine the center of the X-Universe. In one year he's taken Xavier's job, his house and now his origin. All he needs to do now is nail Xavier's girl Lilandra and it's a clean punk out.

Wow, Im glad Im an Avengers fan. The Xmen were cool in the mid 80s till the 90s. After that, they just blew whale penis. Its sad that nothing is sacred anymore in comics anymore. Fail on Marvel, this is lame. This is the most DC like move you all have every made, just sayin'

DAMMIT MARVEL STOP USING WOLVERINE. No this is retarded we do not need another first X-men team the first was Cyclops, Jean Gray, Beast, Iceman, and Angel. Wolverine is so freaking overplayed stop using him can he die for a while like a good year or two kill the bastard so we can be rid of him I hate seeing him everywhere in Marvel. The X-men movies were ruined for me because how it all became about Wolverine it was kinda like Transformers. That should have been called Humans guest starring the Transformers well those movies should have been called Wolverine guest starring the X-men. I HATE WOLVERINE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

and wait Wolverine funded the X-men my God did he also create Cerebro and find all the original X-men and bring them to Professor X. That is such lazy writing why can't this be a what if story or something alternate dimension I don't know something but completely butt [frick]ing the original X-men to make them all about Wolverine.

This idea is so ridiculous. I agree with all that this team would not be called X-Men. They would be a mutant militia or something. His being a leader now shows his character's evolution. Doesn't anyone remember how he has been a loner until he joins the X-Men? Did we all forget that the trauma of the adamantium also amplified his healing factor?
I would much rather read about a Sub-Mariner led team or some other character. Heck, I'd rather read more Invaders stories or (gulp) Defenders--the most boring team with the most interesting roster.

Wolverine is one of my favs but I do not need to see him in every single book! Marvel will keep putting him in books because it sells. I will never read this; the rediscovery of past teams was cool at first and now just BS, plus art looks like sh#t. I would rather they just reboot

X-Men is starting to look like a one trick pony. And this book looks like pure fodder for the Fox movie machine to eat up and spit out in the theaters as a new crap movie.

Wow for a bunch of "Comic Book Fans" I'm surprised at all the hate. Ya I get the criticisms, but how is anyone gonna write this off before they even read it? Everyone here has a comic book that looked stupid but turned out great after a read. I'll be honest I was VERY skeptical of Miles Morales' debut, but I read it and actually liked it. What if they come up with a sick idea? It's just immediately written off before reading? Come on trolls...stop hatin and give it a chance.

I'm a huge fan of the X-Men and Wolverine but this concept of Wolvie forming an X team before giant size X-Men #1 really sucks.

Ugh I really hate the idea. Bad move Marvel.
