Thanks to Bleeding Cool, we have the following spoiler from the latest issue of Fear Itself #5, which went on sale today. Now, I may be a little rusty on my Captain America knowledge, but have we ever seen his iconic shield completely shattered in this way? Whether we have or not, it'll be interesting to see how Marvel handle this latest development! The series has received a somewhat mixed response from fans and critics alike so far, but what do you make of this latest development from writer Matt Fraction?

Ouch! Between this and killing off Bucky, I'm beginning to think Fraction isn't exactly a Captain America fan! Of course, this whole series is about instilling fear in the Marvel Universe's many superheroes, and this is sure to push Cap to his breaking point...remember to pick up Fear Itself #5 for more!

The story, whose title is a reference to a famous quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt, depicts the various superheroes of the Marvel Universe contending with the God of Fear, a supervillain who uses the characters' worst fears against them. Although it is a company-wide crossover, it emphasizes Captain America and Thor, as with past crossovers of the late 2000s

An Aesir, who is apparently Odin's brother, is somehow unleashed on the world and drops seven magical hammers all around the globe. They get picked up by both heroes and villains alike, who begin wreaking havoc on the world. Hijinks ensue.

Hasn't his sheild been broken like fifty times already in the comics. That was a hyperbole, by the way, but still can't they think of more creative things to shock us in a company wide crossover?

@kevberg: I think his sheild was broken at least two other times.

BaneKill77- you're completely right.
This is just another example of Marvel rehashing old stories.

@Kevberg- Your records are wrong. The alloy is a mixture of steel, vibranium, and an unknown substance that is sometimes referred to as "proto-adamantium". I thought it was a well known fact True Adamantium was created during attempts to duplicate the alloy without the use of vibranium.

Anyway, the last time I remember his shield being shattered was in April when Loki stabbed it with Odin's Spear Gugnir in the climax to the Avengers:EMH animated series.

I thought it was pretty cool. I thought more people would be more upset about Spider-Man giving up and wanting to see his family before the end of the world, especially since he was just talking about we have to have hope in his "Fear Itself: Spider-Man" book.

Even if they killed off characters, its not unexpected or shocking anymore. Double yawn!!!

The shield has been shattered loads of times...one time it shattered it even affected the whole of reality for petes sake...

This wont stick very long...whats the point in killing Bucky...giving the shield back to Steve only to have it shattered...again!?
ScionStorm
ScionStorm - 8/11/2011, 1:25 AM
They retconned several early shield shatterings to say that Tony was studying the real shield all along and the ones that shattered were a steel alloy low-grade replacement Steve was using while Tony borrowed the real one.

In my vocabulary, retcon means either "retroactive continuity" or "retooling contradictions".

wasnt this posted a while ago? Or am I thinking of something else?

Anyway, I think it would've been cool if Daredevil had been one of the pivotal characters in this series. What happens when the Man Without Fear comes up against the God Of Fear? Seems like a given to me, while all the other heroes are crippled by fear, Daredevil is the only one who can save the day, despite not having many actual powers

Molecule Man took apart the shield, Thor's hammer and Surfer's board I believe and said the shield was the wierdest molecular structure of all. Then again, he couldn't put Iron Man's armor back together because the circuitry was too complex. Howyoufiggadat?
ScionStorm
ScionStorm - 8/11/2011, 3:50 AM
Oh, until now the only forces that have successfully forced the shield's destruction apparently are:

Molecular Manipulation
Beyonder Power
Infinity Gauntlet
Odinforce

lol @Intruder- I figured that. ;) But I heard he improved on that problem as of late. Probably still not capable off understanding Tony's design but basic machinework molecular control.

The shield has been shattered in the "Secret War" and shortly after the "Heroes Return" storyline.

for the further record kevberg Cap's shield is mixture of vibranium and steel alloy.

he circular shield most associated with Captain America made its debut in Captain America Comics #2 (April 1941). A concavo-convex metal disc approximately 2.5 feet (0.76 m) in diameter, it is virtually indestructible and has remained his most constant shield over the decades.
Again through retroactive continuity, it is established that the shield was presented to Rogers by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The shield is created by a fictional American metallurgist named Myron MacLain, who had been commissioned by the US government to create an indestructible armor material to aid the war effort. MacLain experiments with vibranium, an alien metal found only in Wakanda that has unique vibration absorption properties. During one of his experiments to fuse vibranium with an experimental iron alloy, MacLain falls asleep and awakens to find the experiment a success. This is due to an unknown catalyst entering the process during his slumber, and he is unable to duplicate the result. The vibranium-iron alloy mix is then poured into a mold for a tank's upper hatch to create the disc shape and painted to become Captain America's symbol.

During his early years in the Avengers, when it is not firmly established that the discus-shaped shield is indestructible, the shield is destroyed or lost several times in the comics, to return with no explanation. It is eventually retconned that these are steel replicas, with the actual shield being borrowed by Stark for analysis and returned to Rogers later.

As of 2007, the shield has been damaged or destroyed five times within the confines of the Earth-616 continuity. On each of these occasions, the shield was subjected to a cosmically powerful force capable of reshaping matter on a massive scale. Specifically, the powers that affected the shield are:
The Molecule Man's total control over matter
The godlike power of the Beyonder
The near-omnipotence conferred upon Thanos by the Infinity Gauntlet
The Odinforce wielded by Thor
The divine power of the Serpent, the evil god of fear

The circular shield been destroyed or damaged a few times. I had to look it up because my memory isn't what it use to be.

1. Avengers #215-216 - Molecule Man disentegrates the shield but reassembles it later.

2. Secret Wars #11 - Dr. Doom, with the power of the Beyonder, partially destroys the shield. The power of the Beyonder is later used to reconstruct the shield.

3. Infinity Gauntlet #3 - Thanos, with the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, shatters the shield. It is reassembled by Nebula when she gains control of the gauntlet.

4. Captain America vol.3 #20 (?) - Because the Beyonder's powers reconstructed the shield incorrectly it is shattered when dropped. Through a series of events, the shield is reconstructed with the unintentional help of Klaw.

This is the only one I didn't know about:

5. Avengers vol.3 #63 - Although it is not shattered, the shield is dented by an OdinForce powered Thor who later fixes it.

Also, at one point, the shield was an Adamantium/Vibranium alloy, but it is my understanding it has been retconned into a steel/vibranium alloy.

Well in this issue Tony asks Odin for use of his workshop to make new weapons to use against The Worthy. I'm wondering if Tony will make Cap a new shield made from Asgardian materials/magic that can withstand The Serpent's power.
