On February 2, Fantastic Four writer Dan Slott's "Reckoning War" saga begins in the pages of Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1. From there, the storyline will continue to play out in the pages of Fantastic Four each month, with the story promising to shed light on the First War that rocked the Marvel Universe, a conflict that preceded Asgard, Galactus, and all the heroes you know and love.

That war will now reignite and only the Fantastic Four can defend the Universe from the chaos it will unleash. Today, a first look at the revelations and action to come has been revealed in an awesome new trailer that features some never-before-seen artwork from the highly anticipated event story.

"When I was eight years old I read a particular Marvel comic that struck me. It got me thinking 'If this happened, and that happened, then the whole Marvel universe would be in trouble. Every facet would be in danger if this conflict happened again, and I've sat back and waited since I was eight years old and no one ever touched on this. And that made me happy," Slott recently told to Newsarama. "The Reckoning War is me being able to answer the question an eight-year-old me had: What if those guys showed up again? It's chaos, madness. A fight for your life. This is my Star Wars."

We're certainly intrigued by what Marvel Comics has planned for this storyline, especially with Carlos Pacheco and Carlos Magno on art duties. The Watcher is set to factor into the story, as is Nick Fury in his new guise as "The Unseen" (we're hoping that's undone at some point in this series).

It's Slott. Expect the premise to be interesting and the ending to be disappointing.

@Reeds2Much - Slott’s a great example of what I like to call George Lucas Idea-Man Syndrome. He’s skilled at constantly being able to come up with amazing ideas and interesting concepts and unique stories, but for all his talent at making said unique and great ideas, he isn’t as great/generally sucks when trying to execute those ideas into reality. Like Lucas, he really should get someone to look over and re-edit his work, to polish it up as it were.

For Lucas when making A New Hope for example, that was Marcia Lucas. The Prequels on the other hand were what happens when you George Lucas didn’t have someone like Marcia Lucas to edit his Prequel films as she did the Original Trilogy. Slott basically falls into the same issue as Lucas, for all intents and purposes.

@Reeds2Much - IMO Slott's biggest flaw as a writer is that he is more concerned with leaving his mark on the character's history rather than telling good stories . In his Spider-Man run, basically every story had to be "the biggest thing ever", which has "never been done before" and will "change everything!"

The current state of Marvel: ideas from 8-year-olds.

@malschla - I think the current state of Marvel is "Let's do what the movies do but on steroids!!!"

@SonOfAGif - Which is ironic, because the movies are copying the mistakes of the comics from the last 15 years.

@malschla - That's debatable. I didn't enjoy the comic from of Civil War at all. But I enjoyed the Civil disagreement in the film. I do think Hawkeye did a great job following it's comic run as well.

@SonOfAGif - Just like the comics, Hawkeye’s show was an outlier. I really enjoyed the show. The inclusion of Kingpin was mostly unnecessary, but oh well.

And I think you are supporting my point. The CURRENT movies are making the mistakes from the comics. After Endgame, they took the wrong lesson from its success. It wasn’t the spectacle that won the day, it was the build up.

Same thing happened in comics back in the 90s. The events sold well because they came (fairly) naturally from the events during the comic series. Along the way, Marvel and DC just said “never mind! Events all the time!” and people got sick of it. The events sell better than the regular books, because people have given up on trying to follow a character anymore. If there’s no salad, of course people are going to eat a Twinkie.

The last great run on the FF was over 30 years ago and Byrne was writing and penciling the thing.

@lawndart - was Hitch's run bad? I really don't remember if I finished it, but I remember fans having high hopes. I always wanted a Brian K. Vaughn runon FF.

@VictorAlonzo - honestly I gave up reading the FF a long time ago. They just couldn’t seem to capture the sense of adventure and family but hopefully things have improved somewhere in the time since I was reading it. It was very hit or miss after Byrne and from the early 90s thru the 2000s.

I like the premise and his passion for it, now I hope he made some updates from his pitch as an 8 year old. Not sure I wanna read something on the level of Fast and Furious or Venom

I dread the day when he'll either start writing the mutants or go to DC.

I salute the sacrifice Marvel fans have been making for all these years.

The art looks cartoonish and the logos look like something made in microsoft paint. Having 2 different artists for a short event series is dissappointing. Multiple artists on the same story is always jarring. It's just a way of getting the book drawn quicker, sacrificing consistency for speed.
