James Gunn Says Marvel Studios Will NOT Attend SDCC This Year

According to Guardians Of The Galaxy director, James Gunn, Marvel Studios has some "interesting" plans for this year's San Diego Comic Con. And by interesting, we mean they have NONE. Find out what Gunn had to say about this via both Facebook and Twitter after the jump.

Mavel Studios, for the past couple of years, have used San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) as a promotional catalysts for many of their upcoming releases and casting additions. Last year, we saw a glimpse at this summer's Avengers sequel, as well as some details regarding the Paul Rudd-led Ant-Man. However, with Marvel recently having their own event at the El Capitan Theater to announce Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War, is Marvel Studios' reign over SDCC at an end?

Gunn revealed, via his official Facebook page, that he isn't going to SDCC this year because Marvel will not be there this year. Is Marvel simply conceding this year to WB as they're sure to be releasing a ton of new info on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Or is this now the norm, and Marvel will only attend D23 and announce their new film additions and talent acquisitions at their own fan event?

There is no way in hell they won't be going this year. I mean they got spider-man back for [frick] sakes. What better place to announce who is playing him then at comic con? Or hell, get us all hyped for civil war. I mean Dc is definitely going to be there showing off some batman V superman stuff (they'd be stupid not too) So Marvel has to show up.

Or more so Spidey is going to be in the MCU now. to correct my last post.

Sure Marvel doesn't need comic con. But a Spider-Man casting would trump almost anything DC could throw for suicide squad and Batman V Superman, unless they pull a bad ass trailer out.

Marvel got beat by Teen Wolf last year so I don't blame them lmao

I don't believe this. Marvel have messed with people on the internet many times before.

I'm calling a galactus turd on this one. lol You're telling me that Marvel won't even release promo art for Civil War??

Then again, they're setting new trends. (don't get yourself hyped Remy) Who's to say they won't start doing their own reveals like how they did with their Phase 3 announcement?

TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 3/9/2015, 12:16 AM
But yeah, marvel's Comic Con last year was pretty dull. a bunch of rich guys dancing to Don't Stop Till You Get Enough with what? Footage we all basically saw again later on last year. They may not be ready for what they really want to reveal.

They'll be alright. Probably still counting that Age of Ultron cash until August.
Khanlark
Khanlark - 3/9/2015, 12:21 AM
To everyone complaining, why would Marvel waste their time at Comic Con? Their whole Phase 3 announcement thing was an independently-run thing.... And that received more media-attention than their Comic Con announcements.

@TheRationalNerd

They do that all the time. As did WB with MoS, and Fox with The Wolverine and DOFP.

I was definitely disappointed in Marvel not announcing anything new at their panel last year. But all the backlash just showed how much they've spoiled us.

WB's was weird too. Cavill, Affleck and Gadot came out, waved and were gone before we knew it. They'll be bringing it this year though.

They have to go. It's San Diego Comic-Con.

@Kurne

Yeah, but usually they do all of their reveals at the Con. They've basically revealed everything unless they wanted to brIng their Netflix series cast there. Then there's the reveal of who'l be playing Spidey and eh, so much more they could do but I'd be quite shocked if this were to be true.

How about showing some support to another basic user making news instead of being an arrogant ass? Mmkay?

@DaveAriKhanlark

Well no shit considering nothing else happened that day

When other studios are putting out their own shit Marvel can't even beat out Teen Wolf lmao

So are they going to be hosting their own event like last year at the El Capitan Theater?

@Jeight

So what? That was just announcement, not a stripper who needed a crowd in a goddam theater.

There's a place to meet and greet fans, Comic Con in which DC will reveal information about the slate further.

Atleast DC didn't shuffle their slate like Marvel, all those glossy posters meant nothing with those dates now are they?

DC are realist, they know the slates aren't carved in stones so there's no point to make a big deal announcing it, the final product matters.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 3/9/2015, 3:27 AM
that's...weird. I mean, they practically own the place :P
oh well, I guess Marvel doesn't feel like sweeping the floor with DC this year. let them have their (mis)cast announcements :P

I hope they do more of their independent shows. Cause if that infinity war trailer was shown at comic con it would have not seen the light of day on youtube.

But, but, how will us fanboys have a flame war over who "won" comic con if marvel doesn't show up.
VictorMancha

Dafuq? So the basicly give this one to DC? Suicide Squad and BvS. Man they couldn't even compete with them. I am a big marvel fan though. But I find it weak to not show up.
OrionPax

I don't see how they wouldn't go considering Jessica Jones will be filming and I would imagine Dr.Strange will be In pre production too, we'll see I guess

How does one win SDCC? Is there a trophy or something, maybe a cash prize? Seemingly, Marvel is winning the box office.

@ShipperWar

Yeah, WB/DC stole the show in 2013 also, but these Marvel fanboys can't even accept facts. Now they are saying they don't need Comic Con since disney did the announcement in a theater. Dick sucking much?

@Jollem: Lol, it's afraid!
