Marvel Comics Announces John Romita Jr.'s Return To The Company With An Incredible Piece Of Artwork

John Romita Jr. has spent the past few years lending his talents to the DC Universe on titles like All-Star Batman and Superman, but it's now been confirmed that he's making his long-awaited Marvel return.

John Romita Jr. shocked the world when it was announced he was heading to DC Comics, and while his work in the DC Universe has definitely impressed, it's fair to say that his take on Marvel's iconic characters has definitely been missed. Well, he's now set to make his long-awaited return.

"I have been very fortunate more than a few times in my life, and now I can add this latest event to that list. I have returned to Marvel, the company that I started my career in, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!" the artist said in a statement. "I am literally, at this very moment, working on my next big Marvel project, and it’s a blast! I am just as excited as I was when I first started, and I will do my best to let the work show that again. I hope fans will see that too!"

Marvel Comics hasn't announced what this event is, but a press release notes that "Romita will enter the Marvel Universe once again to draw some of Marvel’s most iconic characters and titles."

It seems fair to say that most fans will be hoping he returns to Amazing Spider-Man, especially with that title's landmark issue #900 on the horizon. A teaser image has been release to accompany this news, and that includes characters from the Avengers, Eternals, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.

We also see heroes like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and The Hulk.

His Arts is terrible

@zeon00 - I wouldn’t say terrible, just a little to blocky and rectangular for my taste. Wooden mannequins with costumes on would be my best description.

His art on All Star Batman sucked, should have just stuck with Greg Capullo

I'm generally not a huge fan of his work it tends to be a bit hit or miss. But he does have an incredibly iconic style, and his Spider-Man run with JMS was second to none probably one of my favourites growing up.

@Chasekeane - He really needs an inker that knows how to complement his style, I think. And some characters he just gels with better than others. I loved him drawing Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the JMS run (maybe it's because there's even shades of Ditko in his kind of blocky and 'geometric' anatomy?) and of course just Spider-Man in general.

But you pair him with an inker that can't smooth off the rough corners, and give him certain other characters and he's damn near a train wreck for me.

I am not the biggest fan of his art, but you can always tell when it is his.

I loved his style in the 80s and early 90s but now... now it looks like he draws in the dark. TURN THE DAMN LIGHTS ON JOHN!!

I think people ought to view his artwork with more nuance than simply good/bad. It’s memorable, and it invokes the feelings of picking up a new comic as a kid. Yeah, it’s blocky, but with the right colorist, the art REALLY shines (like in the Marvel NOW! Captain America run). His art is iconic.

Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with AT&T nixing their comics exclusivity contracts to save a few bucks.

Anyway, I don't mind the blockiness. It's the lines. Lines for shadowing, specifically. Lines lines lines lines lines ...

@Reeds2Much - His early run on X-Men drove me up the wall, even as a kid who didn't know good art from bad. He practically ruined the lead up to Scott and Jean's wedding with that weird Chelsea smile cheekbone thing he insisted on doing with Jean. I mean, the dude was younger then, of course, but what was that supposed to be?!

But, like I said, a good inker knows not to take every one of JRjr's pencil lines seriously. They're better seen like suggestions for colorists.

@Reeds2Much - JRJR of ~ 40 years ago was another artist of today. Other than age, i don't know what happened. I have a page of original art of his from an ASM issue from 1982, and the detail from a young JRJR was really impressive. Maybe he shifted to blocky art with thick lines to not burn out and go the distance. If you look at the great artists, by the time they hit their early 50s they are doing covers only. Cranking out pages is a real grind.

His art style is a better fit for Marvel anyway. The only work he did on DC that I actually liked was All Star Batman.

Avengers, Punisher, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Eternals. I think his style fits the tone of those characters more. With DC, it was mostly weird, ill-fitting, and out of place.

I gotta say to pay attention to who is in the poster roster... most of the existing MCU and it looks like who is just around the corner to join the MCU...
Mr Fantastic, Sue, Johnny and Ben
Celestials
Shang Chi
Scott, Wolverine, Storm
Photon
Miles Morales
Moon Knight
Colossus
Is that Valkyrie on the left and who is next to her?
How about the guy in green next to the one next to Valkyrie?
Who is the gold headed dude behind Hulk?

...and Cap and Iron Man are still there.
