Marvel Mouse VS Paramount Pictures

The Distribution Wars have only yet begun!

At the beginning of this entire Marvel/Disney debacle Disney insisted that they would not be meddling around with the already existing details between Marvel and who distributes their films. All that has changed according to IESB:

"That began to change when Disney CEO Robert Iger, according to Fox Business News, said back in September that he would like to end those distribution deals once the Disney/Marvel deal was complete.

IMHO when Disney purchased Marvel for 5 billion dollars, they bought a well-dressed up pig. While Marvel does own a ton of characters (approx. over 5000), a few of the most well known and successful characters such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and the X-Men have homes at other studios. Sony of course has Spidey and 20th Century Fox, besides having the entire X-Men Universe also controls for perpetuity Daredevil and the Fantastic Four (includes the Silver Surfer and Elektra)."

Yep! You guessed it, Fox owning all those A-List characters pisses the Marvel Mouse right off.

"Actually, if you take a look at what Fox controls it's pretty amazing. For example, the Deadpool character who is having his own feature film developed currently is part of the X-Men universe. Pretty much a freebie and a big middle finger to Marvel and Disney."

A big middle finger? That's for sure. If Fox is giving Marvel the big middle finger over distribution then they are sticking that said middle finger up the fans a^% with how they go about story rewrites and charecter development liberties that they have recently taken (Barakapool). Come On Man!!!

Paramount is set to distribute Iron Man 2 and 3, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers but according to IESB that all might change:

'So what's the big news? Apparently, there is nothing short of a tug of war going on between Disney and Paramount over the properties Par had already lined up and contractually committed to distribute with Marvel. Sadly, it appears that the Mouse may have found a loophole.

How certain are we of this? Certain Disney publicists have already been telling members of the press that Iron Man 3 will definitely be distributed and branded with the Walt Disney logo. Ask the lawyers for details."

It is also being reported that Marvel and Disney are letting the Paramount teams do their jobs in the marketing department. Man that's shiesty!

IESB did say that: 'One thing is for certain, Disney does not want any help from Paramount on Captain America and The Avengers. We are hearing Disney would consider allowing Paramount to distribute Iron Man 3 but that there is no way in hell a Paramount logo would be seen on either the Cap or Avenger films. Disney is spending 500 billion pretty pennies to own Marvel and they want to make sure the Walt Disney brand is all over those films.'

What does this mean to us? Other then Disney already going back on their word that they would not medal with the distribution deals that are already in place, and us catching the lie, not to much. The only negative factor here is, the possibility of the above mentioned films getting pushed back. How many times has that happened to a promising property only to be delayed or scrapped by political/business red tape, in other words, bullsh*t? Too many times.

Yeah, get ready for the cover of Entertainment Weekly to feature how there is some big arguement over who owns what. Ala Watchman I feel. What gets pushed back first? What gets axed? If this gets ugly then I see Avengers being a dead issue.

You have to take into account the original article is just an editorial by IESB. I was looking at this article last night and this could be much ado about nothing. Remember Disney didn't just buy Marvel for film rights. The toy licensing rights are another lucrative area that Disney wants to dive into.

Yeah Disney is evil. They pretend to play nice while their friends steal your toys out of the sandbox behind your back

I hope this doesn't encourage FOX to do whatever the hell they want with the characters just to spite them.

Well some articles make me positive about the merger while some make me skiddish about it like this one for some reason.

I think this is a good thing plus they paid a ton of money for this and should have their logo on it.

I dont it will affect much. At least I hope not. On a side note, I never realized 20th Century Fox has X-men, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil. With all those, they could have started this cameo/crossover business a long time ago. Marvel did a crossover with only two movies. it's obviously not that difficult.

i said it before and ill say it again i fcking hate disney. anyone who beleived them when they said they would honor thier agreements is crazy. they are the biggest cuthroat corporation out there. and i have nothing against that, im all for capitalism and big business, but they dress themselves up in this shiny happy people small world bow and its all bullshit. hypocrisy at its best. they knew what the deal was when they bought marvel and they are trying to screw the other companies out of thier rightful contracts. disney sucks.

why all the complaining?? this is a GOOD thing when it comes to our CBM's. this COULD be the beginning of what we've all been hoping for...disney getting all the rights under one roof.

is anyone really going to care if Paramount doesn't distribute these movies?? i sure as hell couldn't care less. i mean really. now it says disney in the opening credits instead of paramount. BIG DEAL!!

Yeah this sounds like a big FU from disney and will probably play havok on the upcoming Flicks. This sucks!!

Its understandable that after buying the company they want their name associated with the likes of Captain America and The Avengers - I just really hope this doesnt delay those movies!!

Once they've sorted this mess out hopefully they'll get after Fox so we wont have to sit through any more shitty Fantastic Four or X-Men movies made by the likes of Lauren Shuler Donner who I believe said she want to make First Class like the Harry Potter movies...cant [frick]ing wait for that.

@Soul: Lol!
@Multi: Agreed! Disney has yet to give me a reason to doubt them.

I'm SO EXCITED about the first part of this article about Marvel/Disney maybe getting all their movie rights back from Fox and Sony. If some movie dates have to get pushed back so we can rescue the F4, X-Men, Spiderman, Daredevil, and the Silver Surfer, it's well worth it. Hell, push it all back another 4 years so we can incorporate F4, X-Men, Spiderman, Daredevil, and the Silver Surfer into the Avengers universe. I for one will NOT complain.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/2/2010, 9:09 AM
All the editorial says is Disney trying to secure distribution rights by paying Paramount a gob of money or phasing Paramount out over time. What is underhanded about that? Read the original article about the different options being looked at.

@ multi

oh i love it all right. people complaining about things before they even realize whats going on. lol, its kind of funny actually. like you said, they must not be reading the articles or something.

@ fotc

it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for Disney to cause enough trouble to ruin production on Cap and The Avengers from getting made...i say that because, Disney/Marvel are the ones MAKING those movies. Paramount is just the distributor and does not own the rights to those characters in any way. they just have a deal in place to distribute them. again, why would Disney sabotage their own movie??
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/2/2010, 9:19 AM
@ multi and dogsofwar

y'know, people here just see disney, and automatically think they're doing something shady, even though the article doesn't say anything about any shadiness, "its disney, so it must be bad". give me a break.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 2/2/2010, 9:24 AM
Disney needs to tryo to take Spider-man! I know it's a lot more complicated since Sony has the rights and with this Paramount thing, they're just trying to distribute. However, if there is some way they could take Spider-man, i think it could benefit the quality of the movie. Sony is trying to rush so they don't lose the rights. For Marvel/Disney, there is no rush. They could keep Marc Webb and let him take some time on this.
All this is very far fetched, but a guy can dream.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/2/2010, 9:26 AM
@ stubby

the funny thing is, these guys aren't even fighting over who owns the rights. lol.

@ multi

its just irritating hearing the same tired comments in every article that mentions Disney. especially since Disney has done NOTHING negative. people making all these comments that Disney will "Disneyfy" Marvel, yet the only pictures you see of "Disneyfied" characters are made by the fans. lol, kind of ironic, huh?
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/2/2010, 9:29 AM
Don't we as comic book fans want Disney to fight to get these rights back? Marvel jacked itself up so badly licensing everything they could just to stay afloat. If we should be mad at anyone, its Marvel! Sony & Fox just made good business decisions but artistically they have been inconsistent. Disney knows how to do both.

Betty
Betty - 2/2/2010, 9:29 AM
You've gotta fight dern dernt... for the right dern dernt... to make a decent CBM moooooovie!
Betty
Betty - 2/2/2010, 9:32 AM
Dogs-- I bet Marvel sold to Disney BECAUSE they would fight to get all the rights back. Which is a great thing because now all the characters can at least seem like they are part of the same U.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/2/2010, 9:38 AM
Agreed Betty, this was the best business decision Marvel has ever made.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/2/2010, 9:46 AM
Agreed Multi. Isn't their toy licensing agreements just as f***ed up as their film ones? Thats another area of expertise for Disney (Hell, what isn't?). We will continue to see Disney spend money to gain FULL control over all Marvel properties. They are not thinking about the next 5 to 10 years. They are thinking of the next 50 years.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/2/2010, 10:02 AM
I would love to see a Pixar version of Silver Surfer with Galactus. I know its still with Sony but I feel that could be the best translation for it.

Hopefully we will see more animation too. I mean come on, the Thor: Tales of Asgard is in the can and it won't come out until next year with the live action movie. That one doesn't make sense to me.

Marvel Toy Licenses are pittens to Disney, no offense Dogs but Disney bought Marvel for the Movie Money Making oppertunity. Like I said the only neg out of all this could be the release date push back for some of the above mentioned titles. Thats it. Other then that Marvel has use of Disney funds,,,,which are damn near endless!!! Disney Check list
