Warning: SPOILERS for the issue below.
The last issue of Moon Knight saw the rebranding of the series under the new Marvel Legacy relaunch. The previous iteration of the series was a 14-issue run by writer Jeff Lemire and penciler Greg Smallwood. It was one of my favorite series, specifically the artwork and the paneling. The series was very daring in both its storytelling and artwork. This new series by writer Max Bemis and penciler Jacen Burrows had big shoes to fill, and the last two issues have not disappointed.
The first issue of the “Crazy Runs in the Family” storyline was focused primarily on the origin of the villain. We saw Dr. Emmett treating an unnamed patient who is referred to only as “Patient 86”. He is described as a pyromaniac, and through a series of events, becomes the physical embodiment of Amon Ra, the father of Khonshu. This issue went back to focusing on Marc Spector, or in this case Steven Grant. We see him dealing with a villain known as “The Truth”, while Amon Ra seeks out a specific man.
It was nice to get back to the Marc Spector character. Although I enjoyed the previous issue, I read Moon Knight for our hero, not the villains (even though he does have some good rogues). When fighting with “The Truth” I enjoyed seeing Steven Grant leave the forefront of our hero’s consciousness and letting Jake Lockley become the dominant personality. What makes Moon Knight so unique is his multiple personalities, and even though it is usually a vice, we got to see our hero utilizing his mental instability to his advantage. I still prefer Jeff Lemire’s run to this new iteration, but being only two issues in, maybe it’s too early to say.
