CHAPTER 3:
2010: THE YEAR WE GOT IRON MAN 2
Shortly after the release of Iron Man, a sequel was confirmed with Jon Faverau, who planned to make a trilogy out of the character, was back to direct. Originally, Faverau intended Iron Monger to be the villain, until Jeff Bridges was cast as Stane in the first movie, resulting Iron Monger to be the main villain in THAT movie. Faverau still intended for the Mandarin to be in a sequel. However, he didn't appear in the sequel.
Nor did he appear ever.
I love this gif.
The film's script was worked on by two people who previously worked with Robert Downry Jr. Shane Black, who worte Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, helped with the story. Meanwhile, Justin Theroux, who wrote Tropic Thunder, wrote the full script.
As for casting, Sam Rockwell, who was considered for the last movie, was brought in to play Justin Hammer. However, Al Pachino was considered for the role, as Hammer was an old man in the comics. Don Cheadle was also brought in to replace Terrance Howard from the first movie. This casting wasn't controversial, but it did become the butt of many jokes.
Why? BECAUSE THEY LOOK NOTHING ALIKE!
Meanwhile, for Black Widow, they wanted Angelina Jolie, Gemma Arterton, Jessica Beil, Natalie Portman, Elizah Dushku, and... Jessica Alba. DAMN IT!!!!!!! STOP TRYING TO PUT JESSICA ALBA IN SUPERHERO MOVIES. STOP TRYING TO PUT HER IN MOVIES IN GENERAL. WHY DON'T YOU ACTUALLY TRY AND CAST TALENTED ACTRESSES?
Actually, they did, as Emily Blunt got cast in the role. However, she left to star in this peice of crap:
I paid to see this and I'm still ashamed.
So Scarlett Johansen got the gig. Finally, Olivia Munn was cast in a mystery role. However, that role turned out to be a random news reporter. Good. Olivia Munn is overrated. Am I the only one who thinks she's overrated?
But I digress. When the film was released it, it was a success, but got mixed reviews from the critics. Some liked it for the action, acting, and humour. While some thought it speant too much time setting up The Avengers. People were also split on the villains. Everyone hated the underdeveloped Whiplash, yet loved the over-the-top Justin Hammer.
Eight months before the film's release, something completley unexpected happend. DISNEY BOUGHT MARVEL. This isn't new as Disney buys a lot of things. Before this, the bought Muppets & Pixar. Hell, they spent more money on Pixar than they did on Marvel.
Anyway, Disney bought Marvel and any future Marvel Studios feature would be distributed by Disney. Okay, not ALL of them. Due to the dristribution deal with Paramount, they would not be distributing their next two features. Speaking of their next two features.
