Splice director Vincenzo Natali may have a bit to wait before finally bringing an adaptation of
Swamp Thing to the silver screen, but that doesn't mean he should stay away from other comic book movie projects.
When MTV News recently caught up with Natali, the in-demand director mentioned that a movie based on the Marvel Comics Canadian superhero team would be the perfect way to put a spin on the current superhero movie trend.
"I have thought about that a little bit," said Natali in regards to the possibility of making a lower-budget movie about lesser-known comic characters.
"I'll put this out there: maybe Alpha Flight. I thought that would be interesting, to give a little Canadian angle on the superhero mythology. It's an interesting group and it had a lot of different members, so you can take it in a number of different directions. I think it would be cool."
In Marvel Comics mythology, Alpha Flight is a superhero team who work for Department H, a fictitious branch of Canada’s Department of National Defense; which deals exclusively with super-powered threats. The team is strictly composed of Canadian characters such as Guardian, Northstar, Aurora, Puck, Sasquatch, Shaman and Snowbird; most of which come from First Nation or Inuit heritage. In case you're wondering whether Natali is simply throwing comic book themes out there, he's not. The director is a fan of both the comics team and it's creator.
"For those who don't know, Alpha Flight is a Canadian superhero group and it was drawn by one of my favorite Marvel artists, John Byrne. He's a genius."
Natali has yet to speak with Marvel about possibly bringing
Alpha Flight to theaters, and that may be because of the overwhelming amount of superhero films currently being released.
"To be perfectly honest, I'm a little intimidated right now," Natali explained.
"I feel like the world is slightly overcrowded with superheroes, and maybe I'd like to wait a little while before putting my toe into those waters."
