X-MEN BLUE: ORIGINS #1 Reveals A Bonkers New Origin For Nightcrawler And Finally Confirms Who His Parents Are

Nightcrawler's true origin has been a hot topic of debate among comic book fans for many years, but in the pages of X-Men Blue: Origins #1, the fan-favourite mutant's actual parents are finally revealed...

Marvel Comics has been making tweaks to Nightcrawler's origin story for years now, but the hero finally has a definitive history...and it's quite the twist!

In the pages of X-Men Blue: Origins #1, Nightcrawler - who is currently suited up as the Uncanny Spider-Man - finally confronts his mother, Mystique. Recent events have led to many of her long-suppressed memories being unlocked and that's led to a big change when it comes to Kurt Wagner's parentage.

The issue reminds us that Mystique was once disguised as the wife of Baron Christian Wagner, later having an affair with the mutant demon Azazel and subsequently falling pregnant with his child. However, in reality, Mystique was still sleeping with her lover Destiny and, after transforming into a man, impregnated her fellow mutant.

They conceived a child together to cement their love and in the hope of starting a life together; with Destiny pregnant, Mystique faked her baby bump and later pretended to have given birth to the boy who would one day become Nightcrawler.

Why? We later learn that Destiny's psychic powers mean she saw a future where the demon would lay waste to the world. However, distracting him with the idea of a son (whom he spent years searching for) ensured that this post-apocalyptic future never came to pass.

Professor X later changed Mystique's memories at her request but the big news here is that she's not a shape-shifter; instead, she's a "gene-shaper," meaning the mutant can rewrite "the genomic instructions in every single cellular nucleus of her body. All at once. And all without conscious thought." In other words, she's very much gender-fluid, explaining how she conceived a child as a man with another woman.

It's an intriguing twist and one which brings Nightcrawler and Mystique closer together. Will Kurt now track down his mother, Destiny? That remains to be seen, but this is what Chris Claremont originally wanted for the characters, meaning his scrapped idea has finally come back around and been cemented as the new status quo.

Friendly reminder that Fox never cared about this consanguinity, even though Azazel, Mystique and Nightcrawler appeared in the movies.

@CharlesLeeRay
They kinda hinted at it tbh, but they never did anything with it, that's true.

But then again, what's the point when Marvel Comics keeps retconning shit every other tuesday?

Azazel was Kurt's father thanks to a retcon in the Draco storyarc, shitty ass storyline but before that he had a human father, Baron Wagner or some shit.

Wanda and Pietro used to be mutants, Kamala is now a mutant, all of this because of the movies.

@Doomsday8888 - I can't speak on some of this because I don't know about it. But, when did they hint at her being his mom in the movies? He seemed to get aroused by her in X2, and they were close in age in Apocalypse.

Also, Kamala was supposed to be a mutant originally, but the powers that be didn't want Fox to get her for their movies, so they made her an inhuman instead.

@Doomsday8888 - never played the game, the movie was bad enough. However, it isn't canon. But, I remember the character, but I don't remember anything about Nightcrawler from that movie.

Actually, Chris Claremont ORIGINALLY wanted Nightmare, as Nightcrawler's father.

However, Nightmare was Doctor Strange villain, and Roger Stern, who was writing Strange's book at the time, didn't like the idea.

@Toonstrack - I do read the comics. The entire X line is a disaster since Hickman left. It wasnt great when he turned Scott/Jean and Logan into a threeway early on either.

This is what happens when you aren't allowed to end a story. They should call them the Immortal X-Men. Just end this shit. If you don't have good stories... Just stop.

HashTagSwagg - 11/30/2023, 10:44 AM
@TheVandalore - For me, the x-men books ended roughly around here, everything else that came afterwards is as canon as Agents of "SHIELD" was to the MCU

Mystique is the father?? Wow ok, why not

But this gene-shifting hability makes me so curious, like can she shapeshif into someone and also change her genes and so become that person completely? Down to the dna? and btw, she isn't genderfluid, necessarily, she can change her biological sex, but if she indentifies as a woman, she can a have a man's body and still not change her gender, just like before this retcon
Vigor
Vigor - 11/30/2023, 12:21 PM
@Polaris - asking the real questions
JayBarrick
JayBarrick - 11/30/2023, 12:32 PM
@Polaris - go down this road and Mystique could basically her own mutant genes to the point where she could give herself any mutant superpower. She could mimic Franklin Richards DNA and become all mighty, right?
Vigor
Vigor - 11/30/2023, 12:37 PM
@JayBarrick - can't remember. Is she omega level mutant ?!?
Polaris
Polaris - 11/30/2023, 12:42 PM
@JayBarrick - Yeah, I think she could, unless her power has some limitations, but potentially she could do pretty much anything. She could have a child with someone else's body and that kid would genetically be the child of that person. This power is more like possesing a body than shapeshifting
JayBarrick
JayBarrick - 11/30/2023, 12:45 PM
@Vigor - she could be now, I guess.
AnthonyVonGeek
AnthonyVonGeek - 11/30/2023, 1:59 PM
@JayBarrick - Although Mystique's powers were enhanced, Mystique could never duplicate the powers of other mutan or superhumans. She still cannot duplicate the powers of the person she imitates. For example, when she turned herself into a duplicate of Nightcrawler, she did not gain his ability to teleport. From Marvel….
Origame
Origame - 11/30/2023, 2:17 PM
@JayBarrick - remember when days of future past had sentries that could mimic mutant powers and adapt to them because of mystique? Remember how people said that's not how her powers work?

Now marvel basically made it that way.
