COMICS: DARTH MAUL Is Getting His Own STAR WARS Prequel Series Next Year

While Darth Maul has played a key role in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, we'll soon learn more about what he was up to before The Phantom Menace in a new series from Marvel Comics.

Despite having only a very minor role in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has become an iconic part of the franchise. That explains why he was resurrected for The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, but now a new five issue series from Marvel Comics will delve into the villain's past. Written by Cullen Bunn with artwork from Luke Ross, Star Wars: Darth Maul #1 goes on sale next February.

According to USA Today, "The comic finds Maul an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious. Told to stand down from engaging with Jedi yet, Maul hunts down the worst of the worst in the cosmic underworld to vent his frustration. After learning a young Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis has fallen into the hands of a crime lord, Maul seizes an opportunity to test his skills against a real Jedi but also maybe turn someone else to the dark side." That sounds like a pretty cool premise!

Based on comments from Bunn, it sounds like Eldra will be a key player in the life of Maul, so it should be interesting to see what impact she and this series has on the character's future in Star Wars Rebels

they should bring him back into the movies too.

@Matador - They could do the Siege of Mandalore film. They mention it alot in Rebels andit was only breifely touched upon in the Ahsoka novel. But they may worry about how to explainw why maul lives + who ahsoka is to the wider general audience.

But in this day and age people could wip out theyre smart phones and just simply search to get a brief summary.

@Matador - Yes simple searches such is "why maul is alive?" and "who is ahsoka"

@StormXmen123 - Still would be cool if they brought back Darth Maul have Sam Witwer play him in the movie. He did give him a voice.

@Matador - I want him cast as Maul. With such a extreme makeup it would be easy to cast him and people not to be confused. He eleveated the character, and it would be strange to have have maul without his voice now.

That would be same with ahsoka, however I dont feel Ashley Eckstein would suit the Ahsoka design. I think Lupita Nyongo would be great as ahsoka; with Maz being completely cgi she could easily play the role

A Darth Maul movie would be pretty cool.

One of George Lucas' biggest mistakes was to kill Maul. Bringing him back was an even worse mistake.

This is great. I have been reading all of the star wasr comics. But i am getting bored of many of them being set in the Orignal trilogy era. While some have been great Im getting bored of the visuals. This will be great, hopefully we get more Sidious in the story; he is one of my favourite characters.

I wonder when they are going to go into depth of the Seige of Mandalore. Theyve named dropped it alot in Rebels + the was a brief passage in the Ahsoka Novel. I think it would be great if they did a one of special tv movie in the clone wars anaimation style of that arc or maybe a standalone film (but i think that would be to confusing for geenral audinces with maul a live + trying to explain Ahsoka). i dont want it in a novel or comic

@StormXmen123 - Agreed.
Also SW Legends > Current Marvel Comics, or whater SW comics that are confined in a certain continuity...
(i mean, they can't really push the boundaries)

@Doomsday8888 - I enjoy that everything is connected now, its great to here something mentioned in Rebels and then in a random comic/book. Its just the Original trilogy is really confined now as everything (films+books+comics) are centred there. Plus how many times do we have to watch a rebel group take command of an Imperial vessel!!!!!

I just want a different viewpoint + character. They could even have a comic of Maz Kanata; she is over 1000 yearso old they could co back years from the empire so nothing will be retconed. She is the character im most interested in from the Force Awakens

already more happy about this, than a han solo movie
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 11/14/2016, 11:21 AM
@kallel - I enjoy Han but he isnt my favourite character, they could have made this series into a solo film. Im just getting sick of all the SW media (comics, books, tv shows + films) mostly taking place in the Empire era.

This would be perfect as a standalone. Its vastly different from the rest. Maul is argably the favourite vilan from the prequels + his character is much more interesting from CLone Wars and Rebels; we know he wasnt just a "muscle" villian now; it would be great to see him in his prime, thinking he willl be at sidious side during the rise of the Empire

@kallel -
I'm more happy about a lot of things than the Han Solo film, to be honest. It would have been a better decision to just get James Luceno or someone to do a Solo novel than to waste an entire movie slot on him (and the book would probably be better than the film is going to be, depending on the author).

@StormXmen123 - i fully agree. theyre expanding the crap out of the star wars universe. which is cool. i just hope they dont make a mess of it and disrespect some of the main characters. like luke and vader. they are star wars. if a random new character appears and beats them ill give up on the franchise.
but darth maul is very cool by design and character. han solo is cool because harrison ford is awesome. but hes gone, so. seeing maul in a prequel or sequel would be great. and i hear he is still alive in the comic books. even after obi divided him into to.
