CONSTANTINE's First Story Arc Is "Straight From The Comic Books"

We've previously heard that NBC's take on John Constantine would stick to the source material, and now producer Daniel Cerone has revealed that the first season will have elements adapted from the character's early appearances in Swamp Thing.

With the first episode of Constantine airing at 10pm ET/PT tonight on NBC, fans are likely to see several callbacks to the character's comic book origins, including glimpses of Doctor Fate's helmet and Pandora's Box (both seen in trailers). Producer Daniel Cerone has discussed that the first season is all mapped out, and is set to incorporate elements from Constantine's appearances in Swamp Thing stories. "The beauty of developing a comic book like Constantine, that's been in publication, in some form, for 30 years, is that there's such a wealth of material. We definitely know what we're doing this season, we know what our ending is, we know what we're building toward, and we have a sense of what we're doing for the second season and what we'd like our second season arc to be. Our first season arc actually comes straight from the comic books." He points out that Constantine was introduced in the pages of Swamp Thing during the 1980's, and explains how the Hellblazer's role will shift from supporting player (in the early comics) to main character. "If you listen to a lot of the language of what they're talking about, with the rising darkness and some force out there that's planning a terrible event and is trying to flush supernatural entities out of the darkness and into the light, when Constantine showed up in Swamp Thing, he actually showed up as a character who always ushers someone along. Constantine showed up to help facilitate Swamp Thing." Cerone clarifies: "Swamp Thing was the one, at the end of that story, who ended up fighting the darkness. In our story, we're using the same coming darkness, but Constantine is going to be the one who's fighting it. So, we're dipping very heavily into the mythology for the series." Are you excited to see the first episode? And if you've seen it already, are you looking forward to more?

YES! It sucks this show is on so late and Friday nights too. I hope it finds an audience. If it gets cancelled I can tell you it won't be because of lack of quality.

I have it set to record. I'm concerned about it airing on Friday nights, which is known as the "dead zone" for TV shows.

Because people go out on Friday. If the show is popular enough, hopefully they will reschedule the show to air on Thursdays or something.

Trust me guys, if Hannibal can survive and Grimm which shares the same night and only an hour before Constantine, this show will do fine, especially around the Halloween season.

And if memory serves isn't the Swamp Thing arc where Constantine appears all about Swamp Thing and Abigal Arcane trying to bone or something? I vaguely remember that being the setup...

CHANGES FROM THE LEAK

- The demon changes into Constantine instead of talking to him through the security guard
- Liv doesn't come to ask Constantine for help at the end. Chas says she's packed her bags, she's out.

This and Daredevil are the two shows I'm looking forward to the most. Arrow, Flash, Gotham, Agents of Shield, etc... I don't hate any of them. But Daredevil and Constantine will be more akin to The Walking Dead, I think.
If the show does get cancelled, Warners could always just put it on HBO. It would benefit from a more lenient network. Seriously, everything I've heard about this show is awesome except for the lack of smoking.
I like what I'm hearing about the plot of the first season. Basically an Alan Moore Swamp Thing adaptation? Wow. Fvck yes. Thank you.
Maybe they could adapt some of the early Jamie Delano material, too, as it does take place around the same time. In between the first two arcs of Deleno's run, Swamp Thing asks John if he'd fvck his wife for him, which happens in the Alan Moore run of Swamp Thing.
