Geoff Johns Hints At Another DC Magician On CONSTANTINE

Geoff Johns has taken to twitter to clue folks in on an easter egg hidden within an easter egg on NBC's Constantine. Do you know the item behind Fate's helmet? NBC will premiere the Matt Ryan led Constantine on October 24th.

Look closer we did and it appears that the artificat behind Doctor Fate's helmet is none other than the Ibistick, a magicial wand that belongs to Ibis the Invincible.  You're probably scratching your head as to who this is but the character himself isn't what's most exciting about this easter egg.  It's his connection to Fawcett City and Shazam (Captain Marvel) which should have comic book fans buzzing. Ibis and "Shazam" had many Golden Age adventures protecting Fawcett City from the likes of King Kull, The Shade and other Golden Age Fawcett Comics villains. Ibis was even a member of Shazam's Squadron of Justice, a team that included Captain Marvel, Spy Smasher, Ibis, Bulletman and Bulletgirl and Mister Scarlet.

Whether the Ibistick leads to something substantial or it's just a fun easter egg remains to be seen.  We'll all have to find out this Fall when Constantine premieres on NBC, Friday, October 24th at 10PM.

From the realm of total obscurity comes a horrible cliche of a character.

I would totally be fine with Captain Marvel showing up. I just hope they would call him Captain Marvel instead of Shazam. I just hope Swamp Thing and Zatanna find a way on the show too.

@ BlackIceJoe:

You do realize that "Captain Marvel" is a name that they can no longer use, right?

If they don't use it for the comics, or for the cartoons, or for the video games, and not for the upcoming movie, what makes you think they are gonna use it for a TV show???

That's cool.

It seems odd having captain marvel and Constantine overlap - but ill take it.

Sounds like we could have 3 "justice league(s)"

The heavy artillery big big guns in film
The flash / arrow verse with firestorm and the atom and maybe metamorpho and the suicide squad
And justice league "dark" with the oddball DC magic characters.

That's pretty cool.

Monkeys throw poop. You gotta admire the freedom they enjoy. They just do it. No one says anything.

There's another easter egg from the leaked pilod episode. The Pandora box from Trinity War storyline. I don't mind if they've plan to build Justice League Dark in this series. Must be awesome!

SAMURAI36 I thought the reason the name changed in the New 52 was because everyone calls him Shazam. It's not like there has been a new case that WB and DC lost. So he should still be able to be called Captain Marvel. Also when the New 52 came out there was a show on TV called Young Justice and in that show he goes by the name Captain Marvel. I just think DC just said screw it and that's why they call him Shazam instead.

@BlackIceJoe They can't use the name not for any of those reasons smh. It's a rights issue with Marvel I believe in using the word Marvel in the name or because of a similarly named character Captain Mar-Vell. Not sure which is the issue but I know it's with Marvel. A quick Google should help you out though.

And besides Shazam is still a cool name.

Here's a quote from an article I found:
"DC hasn’t been able to use the name Captain Marvel to promote the character since they revived him in the early-70s because the copyright on “Captain Marvel”, originally owned by Fawcett Comics, was allowed to lapse in the 60s, which opened the door for Marvel to jump on the name. Marvel created their own (not particularly memorable) Captain Marvel and have sat on the name ever since, forcing DC to title all their Captain Marvel books “Shazam!” after the word Captain Marvel shouts to activate his powers.

This created the confusing situation of a character named Marvel, being published by DC in books titled Shazam. The name change should clear up some confusion"

Up till now - they would call him calf marvel IN the comics - but on the cover he was always billed as SHAZAM

It's stupid that we can't cal him what he is
BlackIceJoe
BlackIceJoe - 8/4/2014, 10:13 AM
Rokyn I have looked into that myself. But like I was saying until just a few years ago he was still called Captain Marvel. The only reason the comic books with Captain Marvel in them was called Shazam was because they couldn't use the name on the cover. Even last year Captain Marvel was still called that on Young Justice. As much as I would like to see him called Captain Marvel again I just think its less confusing for the general public. So that's why he is now called Shazam instead. Because unless something new happened between Marvel and DC. DC should still be able to call him Captain Marvel just not on the cover of his books.

DC decided they didn't want to use a name that brought their competitor to mind every time it was used.
They had resisted this for years because they rightfully had the "real" Captain Marvel but finally decided it wasn't worth it since most folks knew him as Shazam anyway.

Can't see them using Shazam in this series. Really hoping that helmet leads to seeing Dr. Fate and not just an Easter Egg.
