Future DC Movies Will Be Filmmaker-Driven And Likely More Standalone In Nature Following THE BATMAN

The Batman may not have opened on the same level as last December's Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it's still had a successful debut at the domestic and international box offices. Throw in overwhelmingly positive reviews, and we can't even pretend to be a little shocked that Warner Bros. is now looking to double down on its standalone approach to its DC Comics adaptations.

Attempts to create a "DC Extended Universe" didn't go so well for the studio, and between Joker and The Batman, it's clear that stories set in their own reality have huge potential to succeed.

Talking to Deadline, Warner Bros. President Toby Emmerich shared his thoughts on where DC goes from here. "The secret of the movie business is quality. It’s the best business strategy for both theatrical motion pictures and superhero movies. The movies don’t have to all have the same tone, or interlock with other DC movies, or have an Easter egg that sets up another film."

"Quality is the most important factor for a studio, and the biggest thing you can do to influence quality is the filmmaker that you hire," he said, suggesting that we will see a greater focus on the vision filmmaker's present moving forward. With that, Emmerich went on to explain why Matt Reeves became an obvious choice to take the helm of The Batman and reboot the Caped Crusader for Warner Bros.

"When he pitched the first draft of the script, it harkened back to Batman as the world’s greatest detective," the executive explains. "He talked about the Warner Bros. gangster movies of old and capturing that gangster DNA." He also defended the movie's three-hour runtime by confirming that they tested shorter versions before realising this was the right film to show. "The last time I went to a premiere in Alice Tully Hall was Seven," Emmerich said of the New York premiere, "and on Tuesday night, Batman reminded me of that: The audience was rapt."

It's going to be very interesting to see how The Batman performs financially over the next few weeks; word of mouth is extremely positive, and there's no real competition until Morbius arrives on April 1.

The Batman is now playing in theaters worldwide.

This is what they said with Snyder and Ayer … but I am more optimistic about DC’s future.

@regularmovieguy - And this just in...DC admits they are done with standalone films and they just don't get it. In other news Ray Fisher and Amber Heard....nah, just kidding.

All kidding aside, this should give them the opportunity to catch Marvel in spectacle as these sound more like elseworlds tales or single book/arc stories going forward. I think it's a missed opportunity in that regard, but if this is their sweet spot and the product continues to be stellar from here on out that's all that matters I guess.

Idk how film-maker friendly a movie like The Flash can be when so much of it is meant to revolve around setting the table for the future of a cinematic universe

@tmp3 - I'll hold judgment till I see it. But its not the only DC film post Josstice League that's re used the established characters.

No, not DC being reactionary after one movie? Who’d have thought. Saying that at least we never got the endless dreck of Bat villain solo movies that we where threatened with after Joker haha

I mean, the flash movie, Black Adam’s eventually gonna meet Shazam still at this point, Keaton in Batgirl, James Gunn probably has a lot of plans up his sleeve with characters plus the batverse, they’re still gonna be very much interconnected

Great.

It would suck if DC copies Marvel again. Not only did they fail badly at it, it's not something I would want as a film fan. Sometimes I get frustrated that the MCU is still a thing where everything is connected etc. so it's fun to take a break from that and watch DC films that don't have that issue.

In short, stick to what you do best.

LOL DC is pure idiot fuel. All of these lies are simply for the putpose of misleading their own fanbase into buying in to A failed studios BS.

DC has no identity. Simply being reactionary. This isn't even reactionary. Just trying to use the Batman as a spring board to get their fanbase to accept what the rest of us already knew. The DCEU is dead
