James Gunn Says We Could Potentially See DC VERTIGO Characters In The DCU James Gunn Says We Could Potentially See DC VERTIGO Characters In The DCU

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has taken to Twitter to reveal that we could potentially see characters from DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in the DCU down the line...

Based on what we already know of the new DCU slate - and James Gunn has confirmed that "not even half" of the first chapter has been announced - we're going to see a diverse mix of metahumans, monsters, and magic-based characters, and it sounds like that may only be scratching the surface.

Gunn was asked if "any more Vertigo characters besides Swamp Thing" are going to be introduced, and revealed that, yes, there is indeed potential for certain stories/characters he "really adored" to be adapted.

As Gunn also points out, Swamp Thing was originally introduced in the main DC Comics universe before the more mature Vertigo imprint was implemented (ditto John Constantine, Sandman, Animal Man, etc), but there are plenty of other heroes and villains that could be utilized.

Morpheus seems highly unlikely given the current Netflix Sandman series, but what about Transmetropolitan, The Invisibles, or maybe even Fables?

There are obviously numerous possibilities, but even if any Vertigo-based projects are in the early planning stages, it'll probably be a while before we hear about them - unless Gunn decided to drop a few more hints on social media!

Are there any particular DC Vertigo tales or characters you'd like to see make the jump to the DCU?

A Constantine project with Matt Ryan is something I definitely want. I'd also be interested in a Fables project because Wolf Among Us was awesome.

I love that we are getting The Authority. Opens the door to any Wildstorm character appearing in film and television. Now let’s just get those Milestone characters in there too.

Lets not get way ahead of ourselves Gunn. I think i speak for every comic enthusiast when i say, you havent earned my respect to move forward with my Vertigo Characters. At least thats just imo.

@BeNice123 - I don't think he needs to earn your respect to adapt "your" Vertigo characters lol.

He's a good filmaker IMO and his Suicide Squad was solid and a step in the right direction. I don't trust these guys blindly but I hope fans get GOOD movies.

@BeNice123 - I'm sure he'll be glad to know, he has to earn your approval to move forward with Vertigo characters. You might want to post on here who else he has to check with you on. You know, so he doesn't upset you, on behalf of every comic enthusiast with which you speak for. Which is news to me, so thank you, for speaking for me.

@BeNice123 - Imagine thinking you are above the entire comic book community in deciding who can and can't take on projects without "YOUR" approval.

@SonOfAGif - @Alucard28 - and the rest

goddamn you guys, he was clearly speaking tongue in cheek, and he even ended with "at least that's just imo"

Sometimes I feel like Gunn is just making half of this up as people ask more and more questions. Gunn needs to take a break from social media and build up some suspense for his DCU.

@slickrickdesigns - Yeah, it does kinda seem like he's answering fan questions with a Magic 8-Ball:

Fans: Are we going to get Windstorm characters in the DCU?
Gunn: Definitely.
Fans: How about Vertigo characters?
Gunn: Chances are good.
Fans: Across movies, TV, games, and comics?
Gunn: Could be.
Fans: Winning Powerball numbers?
Gunn: 7-12-34-40-47-62 PB: 18 seems likely.
Fans: Is it a boy or a girl?
Gunn: Probably a boy.
Fans: What are the results of my colonoscopy going to be?
Gunn: 2 polyps, both benign.

I would like to see so many obscure characters as possible. The genre needs a fresh breeze.

Maybe they will make Sandman canon, although then you would run into a Constantine problem, unless you just make Joanna a relative
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/9/2023, 5:13 AM
@dracula - Or she could just be the DCU's Constantine. At least she's British!
I'd love to see some Hellblazer adapted, either way.

Yes to Fables! I’ve read the first 8-10 or so arcs and that series is great!

bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 2:32 PM
@mountainman - [frick] yes. That 100% needs to be a show.

I don't care if it's connected to something else or stand-alone, but I really wanna see that happen. In the meantime I'll wait for The Wolf Among Us 2
mountainman
mountainman - 3/8/2023, 2:44 PM
@bkmeijer1 - If prefer if it was it’s own thing. There is no reason to connect it to any other DC properties, Never played the game, but the comic provides such a cool world to adapt into a long form show.

bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 2:57 PM
@mountainman - exactly my thoughts as well. Do recommend the game also
ObserverIO

@mountainman - It should be it's own thing, but there is also the possibility that this could eventually happen:
