DEADPOOL 2 Star And Producers Weigh In On Fox/Disney Merger; GAMBIT And X-FORCE Still In The Works

With Disney set to acquire Fox next year, there's a lot of speculation about what's next for the Marvel characters owned by the studio and now Ryan Reynolds and Simon Kinberg address Deadpool's future.

Ryan Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth will return in Deadpool 2 on May 18th but could that be the last time we'll see this version of the character? After all, the Fox/Disney deal is still in the works and will more than likely be completed by next summer so Fox will need to move fast to get him back on the big screen. Now, the actor has shared his thoughts on what could come next for the beloved character.

"I really genuinely don’t know a thing about it," admits Reynolds. "I read that [CEO and chairman] Bob Iger felt that there’s plenty of room in that universe to have a rated-R character like Deadpool. This
is completely conjecture on my part, but I wouldn’t imagine that Disney bought Fox to dismantle it or something like that. I think that Disney bought Fox so it could have that in its arsenal."

Incorporating Deadpool into the MCU - albeit with an R-Rating - will be no easy feat but franchise producer Simon Kinberg also seems to be under the impression it will happen. He also makes it clear that Gambit and X-Force remain in the works for now, so those could be released before the merger.

"We haven’t had any discussions yet about what the Disney acquisition of Fox would look like for the Marvel properties because I think legally they’re not allowed to talk about it until it’s done. So no we haven’t talked about it all. We’re just moving forward as we move forward. Once Drew Goddard’s ready we’ll get into X-Force and, believe it or not, we’re still trying to get Gambit [starring Channing Tatum as the cajun mutant] up and running. The hope is to keep moving forward until we hear otherwise. To me, I have no idea what to expect but I think it could be really exciting."

What we do know is that Kevin Feige is probably going to want to reboot the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises so it will be very interesting seeing how Wade Wilson potentially fits into that. What do you guys think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on these comments in the usual place.

The ideal scenario is they nuke and reboot everything but keep Deadpool as it is.

@IKidYouNotMan - I agree 100% Deadpool can be plugged into any scenario just like he is in the comics so a universe altering event wouldn't bother that franchise in the least.

@IKidYouNotMan - ideal scenario would be for disney to nuke the mcu and have the reality and time gem put the mcu into the fox verse.

prob cause it will be the right time for them to reboot cap, iron man, and thor again since the actors contracts r up. And so they can officially make scarlet witch a mutant and make it easier to segway into r rated films.

The current mcu is "too clean" not enough race, gender, and political issues while the fox verse mirrors our real depressing life.

Out of the potential fox films aside from X-force.

I would like to see Kitty Pryde, Noah Howleys Doctor Doom and Silver surfer.

I want "solo standalone films" during this deal period. I don't want films that set up sequels but never deliver.

Kitty Pryde + Lockheed running around the mansion from a demon/alien sounds like fun idea for a film.

I really want to see what Noah can do with Doom (love what he has done with Legion).

And if the films themselves are successful (and "detached" for a strict universe) they could be incorporated into the MCU.

@StormXmen123 - I kind of agree but I have a hard time imagining a completely standalone Silver Surfer movie. I’m not sure how satisfying a story it would be in one movie.

@StormXmen123 - I see them incorporating both Kitty and Gambit. They are both massively popular characters that have barely been touched and could be the face of Disney's XMen.

Also, Brian K Vaughan is doing Silver Surfer, and if you've read anything by the man, you'll want that movie as bad as I do.

I definitely agree it would be interesting to see a Doom solo, but that's one that makes me wonder whether it would fit coming over to the MCU after.

@TheUnworthyThor - Have you read anything by Brian K Vaughan? I have complete faith in whatever script he's working on.

@JacuzziJoe - I’m not familiar with many scripts he has written. But even if he is great that just makes me think less that it’s really a self contained story.

@StormXmen123 - best case scenario. i would also love an X-Men 4 to close it all out.

@TheUnworthyThor - He is from comics. Check out Saga, Pride of Baghdad, Y The Last Man, Ex Machina, Paper Girls, We Stand On Guard, Private Eye...

@JacuzziJoe - No I mean I know who Brian K Vaughn is, bur writing comics and writing screenplays are two different beasts.

I think Deadpool is the one character who could survive as is, and it would play into his narrative perfectly. There are so many jokes that could be built off that - hell, Deadpool 3 could be based around him trying to join The Avengers now he's in the MCU.

Or they could "reboot" it and keep Ryan again, and then you get jokes about how he's played 3 different versions of the character in 3 different timelines/universes.

Whenever the X-Men come home everything that has ties to the current main movies has to go. Deadpool might be one of the few exceptions, but... maybe not.

You have to keep moving forward on projects because if not and deal for some reason doesn’t happen you’re entire studio is screwed, but that doesn’t mean people don’t see the writing on the wall and are making hard concrete plans for the future. You just have to try to do the best job you can with what’s right in front of you.
