Disney And Pixar's ONWARD Will Arrive Early On Digital And Disney+ As Theaters Remain Closed

Theaters across the globe have been closed due to COVID-19 pandemic, and Disney has now revealed that Onward will arrive on Digital TODAY, while it's also coming to Disney+ sooner than expected...

Disney just dropped quite the bombshell by revealing that Pixar's Onward will be available to buy digitally and on Movies Anywhere from 5pm PST/8pm EST TODAY. The movie only arrived in theaters on March 6th, and while it had a couple of weeks at the top of the box office, the closure of theaters worldwide means that this was the only real choice the studio had.

Surprisingly, it's also been confirmed that it will premiere on Disney+ on April 3rd in the United States.

There's no word on what the plan is for an international rollout, but this marks a major shift in the landscape of how films are released (at least for the foreseeable future).

"While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes," said Onward director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae in a joint statement released today.

Movie studios clearly want to maintain the big screen experience and keep theaters open in the long run, but it's hard not to wonder what this could mean for how films are released moving forward.

If nothing else, it could lead to a shortening of the window between movies arriving in theaters and then being available on Digital platforms, especially if some theater chains don't survive this pandemic.

I guess it's better to just cut their loses with this one.
Well, I guess I'm watching it at some point today.

@Spidey91 - I'm surprised they aren't waiting for China. But then again, China doesn't really let in foreign movies about the supernatural and magic. Based of the terrible marketing for Onward, Disney didn't really have much faith in this project in the 1st place.

I guess all bets are on SOUL (which in my opinion looks vastly superior than Onward).

@mastakilla39 - I mean, Disney spent a shit-ton on the production & P&A for it, so they probably just did a shitty job marketing it opposed to not having faith in it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wonder if they're gonna drop something else on Disney+ in the meantime. Obviously not BW or Mulan but maybe something highly requested, they would want to get as many new subscribers as possible during this crisis.

@Spidey91 - Probably "The Call of the Wild" the Harrison Ford dog movie because it flopped. Disney does own and distribute Fox so..

@tmp3 - eh, lesbihonest tho, if they didn't own Marvel or Star wars, would anyone on this site care? My guess is no.

@Oberlin4Prez - If Disney didn't produce things that were relevant to this site's demographic this site's demographic wouldn't care. Brilliant deduction, Batzarro.

Seems weird to put it to purchase for $19.99 two weeks before it's available for free on a $7 service. I get that it's to buy, but it just seems weird to me.

@tmp3 - to be fair, that can be applied to any movie on a streaming service.

@Spidey91 - Yeah but The Invisible Man's not gonna show up on Hulu in two weeks, and neither is Rise of Skywalker

@tmp3 - Seems a pretty clear push to get people to subscribe to Disney +. The comparison makes the D+ choice seem an even stronger deal.

Remember people, Netflix spends up to $200m on films that never have a theatrical run, or at least not a substantial one. There’s a ton of money to be made in streaming

If Disney can keep expanding Disney + subscriptions through this time, then it’s a far better use of films like Onward that are caught in the middle of all of these shutdowns. They’d be well served to go aggressive with new content while we’re all shut in.

I wonder if Rise of Skywalker will be on Disney+ very soon after the physical disc release. So, maybe in about a month from now.
