Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has been halted along with every other big movie and TV show in the works, but composer Alan Menken has shared a major update on the project!
Shooting wasn't supposed to begin until April in anticipation of a 2021 release, and with so much uncertainty surrounding everything, we don't know when work starts back up. Menken has clearly been busy collaborating with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, though, because the music is already done.
Confirming that he's still attached to work on long-delayed Enchanted sequel Disenchanted (whoop!), the composer also reveals that Hercules is currently being adapted into a Broadway show.
The big news, however, is that The Little Mermaid will feature the original songs from the animated classic along with four new ones!
Menken remains actively involved in Disney's live-action remakes after crafting songs for 2017's Beauty and the Beast and the powerful "Speechless" in last year's Aladdin. His songs for The Little Mermaid are bound to go through some changes, with the "blackfish" line from "Under the Sea" one obvious example of something in desperate need of an update.
