ENCANTO Conjures Up Magical $40 Million Thanksgiving Weekend Haul With GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE Close Behind

It was a busy weekend at the box office over Thanksgiving, but Encanto only just managed to stop Ghostbusters from remaining at the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row. Read on for further details...

Top Gun: Maverick was once set to open this Thanksgiving weekend, but with the sequel pushed into 2022, earnings weren't anywhere near as good as previous years over the holiday period. Much of this can be blamed on COVID-19, of course, but a new release still managed to take that coveted #1 spot.

That was Disney Animation's Encanto; the studio's 60th movie, it grossed an impressive $40.3 million over the 5-day holiday period, though Ghostbusters: Afterlife was nipping at its heels with $35.3 million during its second week of release (word of mouth on the threequel seems to be helping a lot).

While Encanto's debut was solid, it was also a tad underwhelming compared to previous Disney releases. It earned $12 million less than Pixar's The Good Dinosaur over the same three-day Thanksgiving weekend and $21 million less than Tangled. Latino and Hispanic audiences turned out for this one in a big way, though, with 52% of the audience originating from that background.

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is understandably causing a lot of concern right now, but Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City bombing can't be blamed on that.

With a lowly 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, no one could be surprised that the movie earned just $5.3 million over three days, and $8.8 million over five. If it was meant to be a fresh start for the video game franchise on the big screen, then it's a colossal failure as the chances are any sort of sequel are slim.

What did you guys decide to watch over Thanksgiving?

Resident Evil looked like a straight to SYFY channel project. Not surprised.

@CARNAVALcarnage - it’s at 150 and needs to pass 171 to pass Incredible Hulk’s adjusted domestic total. It might actually end as the lowest grossing MCU film domestically. Dang

@TheWalkingCuban - Probably not. I looked ahead and there are no wide releases before 12/17 that are going to gobble up screens imo so 175 seems doable. Still its 30-35M less than my original guess.

@JDL - well I’m guessing NWH will cut its legs short, of course it’s still MCU money if not Disney money. 175 would be better than my guess of 160, which it’ll pass soon thank goodness

@TheWalkingCuban - IIRC Disney gets 25% of NWH and any other joint ventures.

If I had to guess this thing is too long and that hurt the B.O..

@JDL - my guess is the length was just part of the negative WoM

Encanto looks like a lot of fun but I’ll switch to catch it on Disney+. I’m hearing good things about Ghostbusters but I can wait to watch it at home.

Resident Evil looked lame and I don’t understand why they would release it during the Thanksgiving frame. It would have been better to release in October for Halloween or even in January.

Also, Omicron sounds like a rejected Transformers character.

That's quite good, considering it barely at any marketing. They seriously need to improve their marketing. I do think it will break even, but it's a good movie imo.

@DipperPines - I think a lot of movies will downplay the marketing as long as COVID is seriously affecting the box office, since huge marketing campaings are usually a huge additional cost, besides the original production budget, and the main reason for the "blockbusters have to make their budgets thrice" rule.

@DipperPines - Spidey will do fine. Shang-Chi did well when the Delta variant was at its highest.

The box office numbers this year should not be taken seriously. Here's why. The top grossing worldwide movie sits at 889 million. That movie would've finished in 10th place in 2019. The top domestic movie sits at 224 million. That movies would've also finished in 10th place in 2019. 2019 was just 2 years ago. It's almost like a pandemic has hit the world and not many people are going out to watch movies in public. Not to mention streaming. I have to believe that most of the top movies this year would've fared a lot better in 2019. The year before the pandemic.
