Live-action remakes of animated classics remain a priority for Disney, and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been enlisted to reimagine Hercules. The popular 1997 musical put a fresh spin on the legend, but this adaptation will obviously need to do a lot to escape the baggage the character has thanks to flops like Brett Ratner's 2014 movie starring Dwayne Johnson.
With the Russo Brothers serving as producers, it has a great shot at being something special, along with a solid writer in Wonder Woman 1984 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe Dave Callaham. Now, Joe has shared an update while talking to Lights, Camera, Barstool.
"It is still in development, the script is about to come in a week. We’ve taken a lot of time and care with it," he explained before revealing that Disney has ambitious plans for a character they clearly feel has some serious franchise potential. "They want to see something really cool that they wanna get lost in it for a decade, so that’s our mission is to provide them with that experience."
Hercules doesn't have a director or release date, but with the script nearly done, those meetings are likely already taking place. We haven't heard any casting news, either, but it's obviously way too soon for that.
Last year, Anthony mentioned that Hercules will include music, and while he didn't clarify whether that meant hits like "The Gospel Truth" and "Zero to Hero" will be included, fans hope that will be the case.
