Now, I'm a huge fan of the 90's classic animated movie Aladdin, I know of very few who aren't. When rumors of a live action film began to circulate I was actually one of the few who didn't mind the idea of it getting a redo. This astounded many who called me stupid (and I may yet prove them right) but my reasoning for getting behind this live action retelling of Aladdin is because I have had the pleasure of seeing the Broadway musical Aladdin and it blew my mind.
Aladdin on stage felt fresh, fast and bursting with energy. The songs transferred really well, the dancing and action all worked but the biggest surprise was the fact that the genie worked. Yes, you heard me, the genie WORKED! he was played by an African American gentleman and he was funny, charismatic and broke the fourth wall to engage the audience directly which was hilarious. Now, many seem to think that Disney are adapting their childhood favorite animated movie where as i feel the recent trailer harkens back a lot more to the Broadway musical. The look, the feel, the sound and the genie. Approaching it all from this perspective I'm really keen on seeing what they can do with Aladdin in a live action format.
