Disney Tax Filings Reveal DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Had A Gargantuan Budget

In order to receive UK Tax credits, Disney is forced to reveal how much it spent on a production and in the case of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, they spent north of $400M!

Released in theaters on May 2, 2022, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness marked Sam Raimi's triumphant return to the world of superhero cinema after previously helming Tob Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy.

The film was generally praised by fans and critics alike, on its way to grossing  $955.8 million at the global box office.

However, a new report from Forbes raises questions about whether the film was profitable, considering its massive budget.

Previously, it was thought that Disney/Marvel spent $294M to produce the film, however, tax filings that Disney is required to disclose for productions filmed in the U.K. have revealed that Marvel spent £331.9 million or  $414.9 million on the Doctor Strange sequel.

Given that box office revenue is split 50/50, Marvel pocketed ~$477.9 million after sharing ticket sales with theater owners, and that doesn't include what Marvel spent on P&A costs.

Recently, Raimi's name has come up as a potential director for a number of upcoming MCU films, including a sequel to No Way Home and Avengers: Secret Wars, but Kevin Feige and co. may be a bit hesitant, given the high production cost on Multiverse of Madness.

However, in Raimi's defense, filming on the Doctor Strange sequel was delayed due to COVID-19 and it's likely that Marvel was forced to absorb extra costs in order to hold on to the soundstages at Longcross Studios, which is just outside of London.

Interestingly enough, Forbes has also provided a chart for the most expensive Marvel films shot in the UK to date, which you can check out below. Again, these are the numbers reported by Disney, who is forced to report on their production costs in order to receive a tax rebate via the government's Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit.

  1.  Infinity War and Endgame: $1.265B production cost
  2. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness: $414.9M production cost
  3. Avengers: Age of Ultron: $388.3M production cost
  4. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: $328.2M production cost
  5. The Eternals: $302M production cost
  6. Black Widow: $286.7M production cost
  7. The Marvels: $277.3M production cost
  8. Doctor Strange: $230.8M production cost
  9. Guardians of the Galaxy: $224.1M production cost
  10. Thor: The Dark World: $217.1M production cost
  11. Captain America: The First Avengers: $173.7M production cost
  12. Ant-Man: $157.7M production cost

Going by this list, it's interesting to see just how much the budget increases from the first entry in a Marvel franchise to future installments.

Recently, Disney CEO Bog Iger stated that Marvel Studios would be returning to a yearly output of 2-3 MCU films but that might not solve its box office dilemma if the studio doesn't start to reign in its production budgets.

So MoM still made an incredible profit.

And look at that, Wakanda Forever turning out to have one of the best returns:

@YouFlopped - nice try, but this actually confirms the film was a flop. At $414 mil, the break even point was over a billion. Hence why marvel lied about the box office.

@McMurdo - it's amazing the lengths these fanboys will go to justify this sh!t. They lied about the numbers for a reason.

@YouFlopped

The first Deadpool is one of the most profitable cbms. The second one was made on a budget of 100 mil. The first one had a budget of 50 mil.

Again - you’re stupid. Lmao.

@regularmovieguy - the second one only made like what, 20 million more than the 1st? 😂

And I’m talking about the cameo fest known as DP3. Anything less than 200m opening weekend, 1B WW is a flop.

But answer the question and stay on topic. Where are the tracking numbers? Why are they hiding them? Is Marvel scared? 😂#FLOP

@YouFlopped

Wakanda Forever had a budget of 250 mil and didn’t make a billion. You’re literally retarded, dude. No way DP2 is going to cost that much. And regardless of how much more the sequel made than the first, it was made for a 100 mil budget.

Again you’re really stupid.

@regularmovieguy - LORD willing, insulting isn't right.

The post I see didn't bring up the first or second movie.

@regularmovieguy - No reason at all for insults here about dumb movies. The OP isn't insulting you. Even if they were, it wouldn't justify insulting (God tells us through The Holy Bible, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.", and that goes for everyone, as all normal humans sin, which The Holy Bible says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." The Holy Bible also says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.").

@dagenspear

You ever hear the saying you go to your church and I’ll go to mine? I just brought up because he constantly says how expensive DP3 is and how it’s going to flop.

I don’t care one way or the other how it does but it’s easily going to be one of the highest grossing movies of the year.

@regularmovieguy - you seem triggered. Sending love your way 🫶🏾

Every film can’t be Black Panther and that’s ok ❤️
