Scott Derrickson Says Marvel Is Too Busy With BLACK PANTHER And INFINITY WAR To Schedule DOCTOR STRANGE 2

Director Scott Derrickson has already stated that he has several ideas for a Doctor Strange sequel, there's just one problem - it hasn't been officially announced yet by anyone at Marvel Studios.

Out promoting the release of Doctor Strange on Blu-ray and DVD, director Scott Derrickson was inevitably asked to comment on the status of the sequel to his $660 million grossing Marvel debut.

"I have no idea where it fits in,” he told the Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve sort of been off the grid. I very much needed a break after that. But I’m starting to read TV pilots. I love dramatic television, and I’ve gotten quite a few good offers on really good pilots. I may do a pilot before Doctor Strange 2, if Doctor Strange 2 is going to happen.

So does the current radio silence alarm Derrickson?  Not one bit.   “Right now, I don’t think the people at Marvel are calling anybody for anything.  They’re making way too many movies at once right now [to do that]. [Given] how intimately involved they are in the development and shooting and post-production of those movies, they’ve got their hands very full right now.

Given their busy schedule with filming just getting underway on Black Panther (February 16, 2018) and Avengers: Infinity War (May 4, 2018) and post-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5, 2017), Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7, 2017), and Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017) all hitting the home stretch, this might be the busiest Marvel Studios has ever been as a collective entity.  Given this crazy schedule, what do you think are the chances that Phase 4 casting and creative hires will occur in time for this year's SDCC/D23 Expo?

Doctor Strange arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on February 28.

Makes sense that Strange 2 isn't on Marvel's minds right now given how many movies they're working on all at once.

Good. At least they're focused and not announcing films left and right. Doctor Strange 2 will probably be announced before the year is over though, maybe when Ant-Man and Wasp goes into production.

I highly doubt that will be hiring/announcing anything for 2020 and beyond when they haven't even sorted out through 2019 yet! First we need a directer for Captain Marvel, and then they'll likely still hold out for a while to avoid spoiling Infinity War.

Well if Doctor Strange is part of the Infinity War...they should wait to see what happens in that film before planning the next one so that they connect seamlessly.

@Forthas - I'm sure they already know what's happening in Infinity War already since they already started production haha

Question: When does Black Panther finish filming? When does Infinity Wars finish? When does Antman Start? And on a side note on top of all of that Marvel still has to worry about continuing to promote there three films this year? While also possibly still mapping out phase 4? Damn son, someone get Fiege a Smoke

@XelCorp - from my understanding Infinity War is an 11-12 month shoot in comparison to Avengers Age of Ultron and Civil War which only took 4 months to shoot. Panther will probably be finished shortly before the summer.

@XelCorp - I read that Black Panther will finish filming in May and Infinity War (and Avengers 4) will finish around september or october.

@XelCorp - I think Ant-Man starts filming around June-ish.

I feel like Feige has something exciting planned post IW, hence those "it would be spoilers" comments from a while back. But there's no way that Strange doesn't get a sequel.

No need to announce obvious things at the moment. Leave some mystery and surprise. And then announce future movies at the optimal time.

Dr. Strange was good but it wasn't great. He needs to slow his role a bit. The slate is pretty full already.
