ETERNALS And FREE GUY Will Skip Disney+ Premiere Access And Release In Theaters ONLY

It's now come to light that both Eternals and Free Guy will forgo a Disney+ Premiere Access release and debut in theatres only. This would seem to suggest that Disney has ended its dual-release strategy.

It looks like Black Widow's underperformance at the box office has resulted in Disney making some big changes to its current dual-release strategy.

A recut version of the Eternals trailer (there's no new footage) aired during Monday night’s Tokyo Summer Olympics, and it confirms that the Phase 4 adventure is set to debut “Only in Theaters November 5.” Nerdist has managed to confirm this, and the site has learned that Free Guy will also be a theatrical exclusive.

This is pretty big news, as it obviously suggests that Disney has moved on from its simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ Premiere Access model and will be sending all of its major features directly to cinemas moving forward.

Theaters are open again and vaccines are rolling out, but with many people still hesitant to return thanks to the Delta Variant, it's going to be a while before these blockbusters are able to rake in even a fraction of what they did pre-pandemic.

It remains to be seen if this strategy will pay off, but Free Guy is set for release next week, so we should find out soon enough.

@MrDandy - Yeah, I'm so glad Marvel is not taking shit from Disney, glad Feige and ScarJo stood up to their bullshit.

No mention of Shang Chi sandwiched in the middle of them though.

Eternals I don't think will end up too hot box office wise, it's another over expensive Disney movie that will fall under the unexpected pandemic.

@DannRamm113 - At least we get to enjoy it regardless.

@DannRamm113 - It might benefit from momentum leaving Shang-chi and going into Spiderman though

@DannRamm113 - The movie has a huge uphill battle to fight. I agree; I expect the box office pull to be comparably dull.

Damn. Scarlet Johansson really humbled Disney.

@SonOfAGif - This ain't new. Shang-Chi was announced with Free Guy to be theaters only with a 45 day window. I think they said something about it in May.

I’m vaccinated but I still don’t know if I’ll see anything theatrically this year outside of Dune and Spider-Man

@tmp3

I’ve seen GVK (first theater movie since Tenet), Black Widow, and I’m on my way to The Green Knight.

Would like to support The Suicide Squad this weekend. May even just buy a ticket and watch on HBOMAX.

@tmp3 - Jackass Forever will be the one to get me back in a theater. But even that all still depends on how these next couple of months go. The last two Jackass movies were just an unbeatable theater experience. Utterly unique and utterly hysterical.

@regularmovieguy - I've seen F9, Black Widow and Old. I'll probably stay home until Shang-Chi.
