ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Denies Speculation That Marvel Studios Takes Control Of Any Action Scenes

One of the filmmakers once eyed to direct Black Widow claimed Marvel Studios told her not to worry about action scenes, but Eternals helmer Chloé Zhao reveals that was never part of her MCU experience...

A few years ago, Argentinean director Lucrecia Martel made headlines when she claimed in an interview that Marvel Studios had told her not to worry about Black Widow's action scenes. She was keen to try her hand at those sequences, so passed on the project, but there's since been a theory that the studio hires filmmakers to shoot the "talky" bits before inserting the action scenes they want in there.

It seems more likely that Marvel Studios was just reassuring a relatively inexperienced filmmaker that they could help. Regardless, during a recent IndieWire interview, Eternals helmer Chloé Zhao denied ever experiencing interference from Marvel Studios when it came to action.

While she did rely on previsualization to help build those set pieces before cameras started rolling, that was something the Oscar-winner notes she was actually involved with from the start.

"From day one, Marvel said, ‘Here are the tools we use. We need your version. We don’t want three different movies we want your movie,’" Zhao explains. "They would be there to help me because I’ve never used these tools. I would probably say that the myth is not quite true and I think I’m not the only filmmaker who would say that."

"My God, for a year and a half, three times a week for a couple hours a day, I was sitting in front of a big screen making decisions for every detail of how visual effects could look in the real world."

While we're sure Zhao wouldn't admit to any creative differences in the midst of a global press tour, she has talked openly about wanting to return for the sequel and even helming Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie. Black Widow director Cate Shorthand has been similarly positive while reflecting on her experience, so it doesn't appear these claims about action scenes are really an issue.

Eternals arrives exclusively in theaters on November 5!

Seems lógical for some of them, It would be very Strange all those directors with no background on fx or action coming up with Avergers size budget out of the blue.

I think there's truth in both, and it depends on the project/director. Black widow would probably be a more high profile project than eternals, so it makes sense there'd be more oversight and hands on approach than what Chloe Zhao went through.

Haven't seen Eternals or any of Chloé Zhao's movies (gonna have a movie night soon to rectify that) but I hope she does more for Marvel. She seems very down to earth and isn't afraid to admit her flaws as a director but is also more than willing to work on them and grow while still maintaining her vision (Just based on the interviews I've seen her in). I wish her nothing but success.

Filmaking is super collaborative in most cases. Sometimes the 2nd unit director handles a ton of the action stuff, sometimes the director wants to be more hands on. Sometimes the studio is dictating things one way or another. What's made Marvel so great for so long is that they're always maintaining certain levels of quality control that mostly keep things at a good-if-not-great level of production quality, and what's made them even better over the last phase has been seeing increasingly eye to eye with their directors from the start to the best of their ability. They don't seem to react as much, and so far Scott Derrickson seems to be the only one who hasn't been able to work through that process, likely because DS2 was the outlier as far as consistency of scope from the initial pitch to shooting

Guess it depends on how much Marvel is willing to let a director do whatever. Eternals is a fairly unique project, so I can them letting that be whatever the directors envisions whereas Black Widow is more mainstream and thus needs some micromanaging

Eternals needs help. Good think Eternals has always been my lease anticipated Marvel Studios movie.

Rotten Tomatoes with 74 Reviews Tomatometer 70%.

I always thought it was Perlmutter who was always trying to micromanage. No one has ever said Feige is over their shoulder. All the drama occurred when Ike and the committee were around.

However I do think they ask filmmakers to filter their vision through the formula, to an extent. I remember Coogler said he wanted to make HIS VERSION of an MCU film.

I think the speculation sticks around because REASONS.

@BlackBeltJones -they were justified in keep things from going over budget, keeping in mind the massive loan Marvel took to finance the first movies.

@YonnyLayna - understandable. But they did cross the line with some stuff, especially Perlmutter

I just don't like the production design it looks so modern Nolan/Deneuve down sci fi, there Is no sign of that Kirby's geométric psicodélic art.

I saw a lot of the shit that was said and it was from a lot of weirdo youtube channels that genuinely don't like Marvel and it spread a lot.

Pathetic people out there. If Ike Perlmutter was still in charge, then this would be complete sense, but it hasn't been that way since like early Phase 2 with that ass in charge.

@Menks123

The second unit absolutely takes control of some of these projects set pieces. Black Widow came out just this year and I can’t be convinced those set pieces were shot and designed to the tee by her.

Other Marvel films post-AOU come to mind, even the ending of Black Panther seems like a pre visual designed not by Coogler or his team.
