Angelina Jolie has appeared in a wide variety of films over the years, and although she has flirted with the comic book movie genre (Wanted), she has yet to play a full-fledged superhero. This November, however, the highly in-demand actress will suit-up as Thena in Marvel's Eternals.
While speaking to Empire Magazine about her MCU debut, Jolie admitted that she tends to avoid superhero/sci-fi projects, but "felt like something else was happening in this film, though. It was very character-driven." The mag then went on to point out that the Tomb Raider star had previously turned down another "famous" superhero role, but "declined to say which out of respect for the actress who went on to play the character."
Jolie has been linked to several high-profile comic book-based films over the years, but there's a decent chance she's referring to Black Widow here. Before Scarlett Johansson landed the role of Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2, there were reports that Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige wanted Jolie for the part. We assumed this was just a rumor at the time, but maybe not?
Another possibility is Captain Marvel. Jolie was actually said to be courted to direct the movie, but may also have been offered the lead role of Carol Danvers before Brie Larson signed on.
Then, of course, there's a character Jolie has been fan-cast as for many years: Wonder Woman! There are numerous possibilities, so we may never know for sure.
Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, The Deviants.
The movie is set to hit theaters on November 4. Do you plan on checking it out opening weekend?
