ETERNALS Writer Explains The Team's Link To Thanos And Blames [SPOILER] For His Villainous Turn

Eternals writer Kaz Firpo talks more about how Thanos' story is tied to these immortal heroes, revealing that a newly introduced character may actually be to blame for the villain becoming the Mad Titan.

Heading into Eternals, we expected to see at least something from Thanos, but it's his brother - Harry Styles' Starfox - who makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the movie's mid-credits scene. Both characters have a long, complicated history with the Eternals in the comic books; however, both on the page and screen, their father is the Eternal A'lars.

While he brought a perfect son into the world in the form of Eros, Thanos was essentially considered a Deviant. Horrified by his appearance and sensing the darkness with him, Thanos' mother immediately tried to kill her son after first laying eyes upon him. After that, the boy who'd one day be known as the Mad Titan quickly embraced the bloodlust he felt as a child.

We all know what happened next, of course, but in the MCU, it sounds like Starfox could have been a major contributing factor to Thanos becoming a tyrant who wiped out half the universe.

Writer Kaz Firpo tells Screen Rant: "I think, for the sake of this movie as a film, we really just decided to tell this story, and maybe when we get out into the cosmos you might...I mean, we're literally meeting Thanos' actual brother at the end of the film, and I think there's room for Eros - well, Harry [Styles] - to have a conversation about that."

"I think that Starfox is a lot responsible for why Thanos is the way he is, to have that...all jokes aside, to have this perfect brother who can make anyone fall in love with him? It does something to you. So I hope we get to see a little bit more of that in Number 2."

Starfox certainly doesn't appear to have an issue with being introduced as Thanos' brother by Pip the Troll, so exploring what their relationship looked like promises to be undeniably fascinating. There were once plans to flash-back to the villain's childhood in Avengers: Infinity War, but that could easily be revisited as we start learning more about Eros' place in this shared world.

Eternals is now playing in theaters. Click here to check out our look at what it sets up for the future.

@Origame - yikes , told my girlfriend that I assumed they wouldn’t cause it’s a little problematic but maybe they can tweak it

@Origame - There's no reason to make every character black or white, either and all-round do-gooder, or an outright bad person. Make Eros problematic, make him creepy a little why not?
You don't have to agree with him, but it'll surely make for an interesting character to watch.

@Fares - I mean, if he was supposed to be a villain I could see your point. But he's a hero, with a power that has been compared to a date r4pe drug.

@Origame - For me, he can do things for the greater good, and be recognized as a hero by the general public. But he can still also be a piece of shit in some aspects of his personality for all I care. Again, I think that's an interesting person to see on screen.

@Fares - being essentially a r4pist is a bit more than that.

@Origame - I don't know, I think "piece of shit" is good enough of a description. I realize it's not a popular sentiment to give the spotlight to morally-unrelatable characters. I certainly don't expect big Hollywood studios to do something like that, especially not Disney. We get movies about thieves and killers but definitely not something as touchy as that. Still, it's a concept that fascinates me, I can't help it.

Intrigued to see where they go with this and how Styles caan portray this kind of character throughout a movie.

He's tonally and visually very different from Thanos and we haven't seen him Lead a movie yet or play a character like this

I think he could work like a Hancock kind of superhero, not the addict aspect but just a casual OP hero who's very flippant during action scenes

I loved Eternals but casting Harry Styles as Thanos brother is so lame. I live in Australia and cinema goers here are extremely subdued, no cheering, clapping, reactions… cinema is always dead silent. But when they say Thanos brother is being introduced then Harry showed up, I heard a guy groan loudly and say ‘seriously?’ and had to agree with him. Anyone whose not a comics fan hears Thanos brother and expects something badass then a boy band wuss shows up? Lame. I know that juxtaposition is a thing in the comics but having these tk be even remotely related is a hard sell, especially for general audiences.

But anyway Eternals was [frick]in great

Thanos was already like the most complex villain in the MCU and now Eros coming in the picture is gonna add so many more layers to him. That's one of the things I really dig about the MCU.
