Can "The Avengers" break box-office records?

Can the big superhero team-up break "The Dark Knight"'s opening weekend record AND "Avatar"'s all time record?

"The Avengers" is easily the most-hyped movie of the 21st century, maybe even of all time. With all the talk surrounding the superhero team-up movie, there are several questions around it. Will it live up to the hype? What will the plot be? What will it rake in at the box office?

The box office is amongst the most important one of all. Granted the fans may hate the movie, as they have hated other CBM movies, yet, still flocked to the theaters to see them as they raked in the big money. "The Avengers" is more than that it seems. Marvel is making it more than a movie; they are making it THE movie event of the century. I have no clue per its budget, more than likely between $150-200 million. I believe Marvel is throwing in the kitchen sink for this movie. Let's rewind to how the hype started.

"Iron Man" opened to a big 90+ million opening weekend in 2008, surpassing all expectations and making it one of the top CBM movies of all time. But whispers were beginning to talk about "The Avengers" when Samuel L. Jackson showed after the end credits/. He introduced himself as SHIELD director Nick Fury and wanted to talk to him about "The Avenger Initiative."

One month later "The Incredible Hulk" opened to a 60 million opening weekend (not as big as Marvel would have hoped). It was better than the 2003 debacle. The scene at the end of the film when Tony Stark shows up and tells General Ross that they are forming a "team," the talk really went up a notch.

Marvel then announced later that month they they will make movies of "Thor" and "Captain America" as well as "Iron Man 2" before "The Avengers" comes out. Initially the release date was going to be July 15, 2011, but Marvel wanted to get it right. They moved Thor back one year, Captain America from May 2011 to July 2011, and then "Avengers" to open up Summer 2012. Marvel has set its game plan in place and will try for the grand slam of all superhero movies.

Movies usually get hyped up with talks and whispers when the movie is green lit. When a certain movie does, based on anything popular such as a comic, novel, cartoon, tv show or video game, fanboys and fangirls immediately begin thinking who should be cast. Think about it. We all have done it one time or another, especially with friends at the lunch table as kids? Now with the internet, news travels so fast we want everything in an instant at the touch of a button. "Avengers" has had more hype than any other movie. There is one thing that needs to be known.....What will the box office results be?

Granted we still have a way to go until May 4, 2012. As we know, Marvel has owned the first week of the summer for pretty much the past decade (Spider Man in 2002, X-Men 2 in 2003, Spider Man 3 in 2007, Iron Man in 2008, X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, Iron Man 2 in 2010, and will include Thor in 2011). Also, it has pretty much three weeks to ITSELF until Memorial Day weekend when "Men In Black 3D" opens. I don't think "The Avengers"' being 3D will make or break the movie. It is still going to be smash hit regardless. The big question is: will it first break "The Dark Knight"'s opening weekend record? TDK got 158.3 Million its first weekend in 2008. It came with a lot of hype as well. I can not say whether Heath Ledger's untimely death had anything to do with it. It ended up being the third highest grossing film of all time. With no competition that we know, so far, I think it has a great chance of passing TDK.

Can it pass the 750 Million that "Avatar" had this past year? Well Avatar did get a lot of its money from people seeing it in 3D and IMAX. aLthough The "Avengers" will have a 3D option and a 2D option, how much money it will get its first three weeks will determine if it is on the right path to being the highest grossing movie of all time. "Avatar" was also hyped up as being a movie that will change the way movies are made. It did by making every movie 3D now it seems.

I would love to see "The Avengers" break these records, as they say records are meant to be broken correct? No Performance enhancing drugs involved.

@ gambitfreak

i'd have to agree,i thought avatar was good.

but it didn't deserve to take the money it took.

i think only batman 3 can slay that box office beast.

it will definetly be marvel studios biggest hit & it will be probably be the biggest grossing marvel comic movie.

All-time box-office records? Sadly, no. But I do think it has a chance to break opening-weekend records and such. It'll mostly depend on the script/story and how well the actors gel together. If each of them bring their A-game to the project, then I don't see why not.

Well the bad thing is that prolly Batman 3 will do with it the same The Dark Knight did with Iron Man :(

Batman The Dark Knight was a once in a lifetime achievement. Without Heath Ledgers death it wouldn't have done so good. All the hype etc. The Avengers I think will not achieve this without some sort of actor going to his or hers demise. Batman films are also more modern, more "real". The Avengers will only appeal to comic book readers mostly, but yes, those comicbook readers will get a lot of friends to go with them to the cinema. But it wont be enough. It wont be mainstream enough. It will be hyped up but I highly doubt it will be anywhere near Batman TDK. And Batman 3 will be fueled by the still hype of TDK.
I am not saying this as a DC fanboy but as a neutral observer. I want Marvel to do good so DC can get their ass rolling with Flash(which is going forward), Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman etc! But it wont outdo TDKs superhuman hype. And Avatar was even more hyped than TDK!

BMP!

Angelus- The Dark Knight did such a good job because it was a masterpiece of a movie and I think it would have done just as good if Heath was alive.

this is a very difficult question for anyone to answer right now as their will be script changes costume changes or redesigns that will affect how much money the movie makes at the box office. also what kind of surprises the director plans to implement will have a negative response from the fans of comic book movies

@brazilian I dont think Spidey will get 350 million at the US box office cause the other movies were not going head to head against something its opening weekend, the reboot is, its going head to head against Star Trek 2, then 2 weeks later Batman opens.

Avengers I think will get 400 million its first 3 weeks before MIB3 comes out.

No, I can't see the Avengers approaching Avatar in box office receipts.

Howver I believe it will do better than other Marvel movies such as Captain America and Thor.

If you get a chance check out my Marvel fanfic: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1276881/David_Scholes

Maybe also check out my new sci-fi novella.

I don't care if it doesn't beat out Avatar or the Dark Knight... As long as the marvel puts out a very good product that makes sense, has a great storyline, great casting, Excellent Special FX, Great characters and isn't cheesy then everything will be fine with me. The one thing about the earning potential that's important is that it makes between $800M and $1B world wide.. It just has to make alot in order for sequels to have a chance to be made.

I don't think MI3D is gonna do SO WELL that its going to hurt The Avengers chances at the Box Office. The third MIB movie should have come out years ago and its not as relevant as it was before. MIB3D maybe number 1 at the BO that weekend but its not gonna make a lot more than The AVengers will make that weekend.

You should take in to account that Thor and Capt. America movies are unproven. If they are successful, then the team flick will be big. Remember, TDK is very unusal. Ledger's death and its possibly being related to that role didn't hurt it in the least. Now, to achieve "Avatar" money, you really have to be something never-before-seen. It's doubtful. The sad part is how lame a story "Avatar" had. At least TDK had a terrific plot with twists along the way.

If there are really people who think that the reason TDK did so well was not because of the hype generated by Heath Ledger's death they need to wake up. Personally I find it to be insipidly boring and uninspiring, riddled with plot contrivances, no memorable action sequences and a dull, anticlimactic ending.

That said I agree with those who say that its hype will carry on to the TDKR.

Whether or not Avengers will break records will depend a lot on how many people are getting caught up the MCU, the budget and thus action sequences, and how good the movie is overall.
