Edgar Wright's Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright's Ant-Man.

Editorial Opinion

The Ant Man movie which many have heard of has been growing in size and opinion. Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright have written and are co-directing the movie with possible candidates for the lead role of Hank Pym.
Many people have speculated that Nathan Fillon would be playing Ant Man but the actor has put these thoughts to rest at Comic Con in San Diego. It has also been rumored that actor Adrien Brody might be taking over the role of Hank Pym .
While I believe in Edgar Wright's overall vision here are a few things I would like opinions on of the fans of the comics.

1. Will Wasp be in this movie? I think she will be but near the end to help out Ant Man in the final battle or whatever.

2. One of the things on my bad side about this movie is the possibility of Ant Man being set in the 60's with Scott Lang as his successor. I don't like this idea and I don't think Marvel will let it slide. I think that Hank Pym should play Ant Man during the movie, have Scott Lang in the mix and Wasp. By the end of the movie he should pass on the Ant Man mantle to Scott Lang but return as Giant Man with Wasp in an Avengers sequel.

3. Who will the villain be? It has been said by the director that Ant Man will be sort of like a secret agent movie. But every hero needs a villain and in this case (and don't laugh at me) I think Egghead is the most logical choice. Simon Pegg is most likely going to be cast as the villain as he has worked with Wright on several other movies and here are my thoughts about it. Egghead could be working for some organization like Hydra and he could be some mutant genius and he could end up being a good villain with a abnormally large dome. And Ant Man could even call him Egghead in a scene where he's insulting the baddie.

These are my thoughts accompanied by the facts, tell me what you think.

ok...girst having scott lang as Ant-MAn is just stupid (He should be antman like in the next 6 years but not now) also Wasp is deff gonna be in the film but prob not as her superhero persona , it'll prob be a war-machine like "next time". Also to me the perfect villian is A.I.M. and M.O.D.O.k. . Oh and just cause PEgg was in some of Wrights film doesnt mean he is guarantee'd a role, look at Scott P.

No MODOK yet. But bring on AIM and Egghead. There's a lot you can do with that working together. Egghead can be working on MODOK project.

It should start with Hank's first wife getting merdured which pushes him to seek out the people that did it and leads to AIM-who is hiring Egghead to reverse-engineer Hank's inventions. Egghead could also send this creature:

Regarding Janet:
"Hank Pym first met Janet Van Dyne when her father, noted astrophysicist, approached Hank to see if he would collaborate on a project he was working on. Hank turned down the offer and Janet almost slipped out his life; even after they left Hank was haunted by how much Janet looked like his murdered wife Maria."

Janet's father would eventually attract the interest of an extraterrestrial criminal who would cause his death and Janet would request Hank's help in avenging him. That is why Pym gave her powers.

I personally do not like Scott Lang's character and fully condone anyone who would like to bash him on this comment wall.

Yes, but according to Simon Pegg he will not be playing Ant-Man and if he does have involvement in the film it will be as a villain

hows bout this?
hank pym is working applications for pym particles (the G.I.Ant Man suit from Irredeemable Ant Man comes to mind). He's also working on ways to control insect life through his helmet.
AIM get wind of this, specifically Monica Rappaccini and george tartleton. They get their hands on his helmet and tinker with it so it can control human minds instead of people. To save the world, the pacifistic Hank Pym must work closely with SHIELD to infiltrate the high-tech AIM base and take down AIM.
I'd like to think of Hank Pym as the perpetual victim like he is in the comics...laughed at by the scientific community, with low credibility. Monica Rappacini can tap into that, trying to seduce him and convince him to join AIM.
Also you can work in the machine not working properly and turning Tartleton into MODOK.
Janet's his hot love interest, and sprinkle Ultron teases in there. u got yourself a movie.!

I do like that idea xcrementus if Egghead isn't the villain, that sounds really cool

There's one big problem with your idea xcrementus (though I like the characters involved). Ant-Man's helmet DOESN'T CONTROL ANTS. It's primary function is a communications device for insects-originally just ants. The Ants help him because they want to. There is a huge difference in his moral values between mind-controlling the ants and allying with them.

I believe this was also a point made in the comics in which Egghead constructed a copy of Ant-Man's helmet, thinking the device was used to control insects. He found out too late that it was merely a communications device and ended up losing a contest of loyalty from the ants to Pym.

Egghead seems like the best villain to go with, working with AIM. I also really don't want the murder of Hank's first wife to be glazed over. It sets a specific tone to his character in the beginning.

The murder also immediately dissolves the idea that audiences are going to be watching a campy film. Ant-Man should be serious, the humor either ironic or natural to the characters.

And if Egghead sounds like too dorky a name for a villain, he didn't choose that name. It was given to him by tabloids.

This is his origin:

"Elihas Starr was a scientist working at an atomic research center for the government of the United States. He was caught when trying to smuggle drafts of an atomic project, probably to sell them on the open market. He was then fired from the center and was waiting to be judged for treason. However, the criminal world discovered his ordeal because of tabloids (where he was nicknamed Egghead and offered him freedom if he was ready to put his intellect to the service of the crime lords."

Was vision91 bored and decided to just make up a load of shite. First joe cornish has said he isn't directing in an interview. Second what just because simon pegg and edgar are close friends you automatically presume he will be involved. Third marvel only a third draft has been handed in and ant man is going to be about hank pym and joe cornish has said it might be a heist film. So go back to the drawing board vision91

oh my bad, i forgot that his helmet wasn't designed to control ants. Maybe its the telepathic component that AIM wants to tap into?

and for the record, i'm all for Egghead working for AIM, he's smart and he's evil so that's no probs. I just think Rappacini and MODOK represent the flip side of Hank Pym, brains that use their power for good instead of evil.
Egghead was always a meh villain for me, there's good reason why he hasn't been used in a decade.

oh and regarding his wife's death, that's an awesome way to sell the derail of pym's career. A bright young mind brought down by his own grief, turning to his work seen as absurd by the wider scientific community.
Also sells his lack of will to commit to Janet.
Have you guys read the 60s books? Janet is maybe the neediest chick ON THIS PLANET!! I for one wouldn't need a dead spouse to consider not going out with Wasp, no matter how big or small she can grow her ass! And what was with Bendis's Secret Invasion story, of them reconciling in London, which consisted of her going out getting drunk cheating on him while he says "sorry i beat you" a thousand times over? Janet just aint worth it haha

Bearjew - 8/7/2011, 8:28 PM
No I didn't presume anything this is just what I've heard and I'm not even saying Simon Pegg will be playing in the movie, I said he will most likely be in it. And yes actors who have worked with the director before have a better chance of geeting into a movie. Look at Tom Hardy from Inception as Bane! Joseph Gordon Levitt is in the new Batman too as Tom Blake and don't forget Johnny Depp in like every Tim Burton movie ever made. So next time don't get so upset because I said some actor might be in a movie because he had a preexsisting partnership with Edgar Wright

lol For some reason, every time I think of the Wasp, "Dammit Janet!" plays in my head. Haha.

I feel like the "Science community ridicules absurd scientist" is old cliche. In a world where we have proof of super soldiers and men fly around in metal suits, the science community are just going to look like idiot assholes for dismissing Pym's work so easily.

Anyway, everytime I think of Pym's work I also think of the show Fringe. Since, essentially that is where Pym's work is leading to. Fringe science, at the stretch of the imagination yet still a glimmer of possibility.
xcrementus
xcrementus - 8/8/2011, 12:00 AM
oh, i didn't mean that the scientific community would ridicule his work per se, I just meant pym's penchant for being a great big obsessive weirdo would reflect on his professional standing. I mean sure he has great ideas, but who wants to work with a guy like that?
Picture the scene from Splice where the two blobs kill each other with the press watching. Hank's personal problems can lead to his failed career, not just his wacky ideas.
Just like Walter from Fringe! haha
