When Rebecca Romijn was Mystique, I would have flat out said no. I loved her Mystique and it played well in the movies that she was in, but the character was stone-faced and unrelatable and therefore could never hold her own movie. Even when Jennifer Lawrence was in X-men First Class, I was skeptical because of the massive departure Lawrence made from the Mystique main stream audiences knew. BUT after seeing X-Men Days of Future Past, I not only believe that this COULD happen, but that it SHOULD happen. Mystique has become a far more relatable character while still encompassing the ruthlessness from the original trilogy.
Jennifer Lawrence has come into her own with this role. She kills nearly every performance she gives, but one could not help but to notice a slight discomfort from her in First Class. It wasn't that she wasn't good at it, she was just unsure at the time. In this inbetweenquel however, she truly becomes Mystique. The scene when she is in the Vietnamese official's hotel room is what sold me on her own film. THAT SCENE ALONE. When she had him pinned by his throat with her foot, I couldn't help but to feel that this was Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence could always carry her own movie, we know that from The Hunger Games, but now we know she can be Mystique.
Mystique could potentially be a mutant-female James Bond. The way I would envision the movie is that she goes out to kill (or simply stop depending on where they take the character) a mutant-hate group and does so in the stealthy way that Bond does, but of course with all of her shape-shifting, back-flipping action. It could be really cool. Also, people who see DoFP will no doubt be intirgued as to where Mystique goes between movies and how she eventually becomes the badass of the original trilogy. She's a multi-dimensional and extremely relatable character now that people are interested in seeing more of.
Another thought is that Jennifer Lawrence may be uncomfortable with the nudity that Mystique is so famous for on the big screen. Give her the white dress or maybe the black mercenary gear that she wears in the comics. It would lower time in hair and make-up and make the star more comfortable. I would hope that people are more focused on her story than her boobs.
So that just about ends this editorial. One thing I've struggled with, however, is WHO. Who should Mystique go after in her own solo outing? Should she be accompanied by her Brotherhood? Comment your thoughts below!
Thanks.
