FAN-ticizing: Why a Mystique SOLO Movie Would Work

There has been much debate over whether or not Mystique could support her own solo movie, but after X-Men Days of Future Past, is she ready to go out on her own? SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!

  When Rebecca Romijn was Mystique, I would have flat out said no. I loved her Mystique and it played well in the movies that she was in, but the character was stone-faced and unrelatable and therefore could never hold her own movie. Even when Jennifer Lawrence was in X-men First Class, I was skeptical because of the massive departure Lawrence made from the Mystique main stream audiences knew. BUT after seeing X-Men Days of Future Past, I not only believe that this COULD happen, but that it SHOULD happen. Mystique has become a far more relatable character while still encompassing the ruthlessness from the original trilogy.

  Jennifer Lawrence has come into her own with this role. She kills nearly every performance she gives, but one could not help but to notice a slight discomfort from her in First Class. It wasn't that she wasn't good at it, she was just unsure at the time. In this inbetweenquel however, she truly becomes Mystique. The scene when she is in the Vietnamese official's hotel room is what sold me on her own film. THAT SCENE ALONE. When she had him pinned by his throat with her foot, I couldn't help but to feel that this was Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence could always carry her own movie, we know that from The Hunger Games, but now we know she can be Mystique.
  Mystique could potentially be a mutant-female James Bond. The way I would envision the movie is that she goes out to kill (or simply stop depending on where they take the character) a mutant-hate group and does so in the stealthy way that Bond does, but of course with all of her shape-shifting, back-flipping action. It could be really cool. Also, people who see DoFP will no doubt be intirgued as to where Mystique goes between movies and how she eventually becomes the badass of the original trilogy. She's a multi-dimensional and extremely relatable character now that people are interested in seeing more of.

  Another thought is that Jennifer Lawrence may be uncomfortable with the nudity that Mystique is so famous for on the big screen. Give her the white dress or maybe the black mercenary gear that she wears in the comics. It would lower time in hair and make-up and make the star more comfortable. I would hope that people are more focused on her story than her boobs.

  So that just about ends this editorial. One thing I've struggled with, however, is WHO. Who should Mystique go after in her own solo outing? Should she be accompanied by her Brotherhood? Comment your thoughts below!

Thanks.

Sorry but

I wouldn't want a Mystique solo especially with JLaw as the lead. To me she phones in Mystique. Also, I have to give a side eye here because I LOVE how a female can only get a solo film is if she has powers.

Seeing this movie, it all makes sense.
In FC she's just a normal girl, she's insecure about her body and tries to hide it, she's ashamed to be a mutant and that's natural. Then she accepts it after meeting Magneto and experiencing all of his viewpoints and morals. Then you see the emotion she feels when she sees the photos of her dead friends, Angel, Emma and Azazel and from that point she turns cold, she hates humankind and that's how she becomes the stone-faced Mystique we see with Romijn.

I'd definitely see a Mystique solo movie. She's a character with so much depth and intrigue. Perhaps set it before DOFP, find out where she got her very impressive fighting skills from and when she left Magneto.

Or have it be a movie with Wolverine.

I'd rather have Blink or Rogue or Shadowcat or Emma Frost or Scarlet Witch or Jean Grey or even Jubilee.

Aske my girlfriend this same question, she went on a rant on why this is some BS and why she would rather see a movie on Cycs.

The reason Mystique is so heavily featured lately is NOTHING to do with Jennifer Lawrence. The only impact she has is that she's shown more in the marketing.

She was cast in First Class before people even knew her name or who she was. Mystique in the FC script was already a prominant character in that movie and that surely would have just continued throughout subsequent movies.

If they did a film about her it could show her with Azazel and the birth of Kurt, his abandonment, the, if they finally stop violating Rouge's character and recast her, show her taking in a young Rogue as a her daughter... seriously, recast Paquin or however the hell you spell that woman's name.

Paquin can be a good Rogue if the script allows it (see True Blood).

We'll agree to disagree. I rewatched a scene between her and Wolverine in X3. Badly written her scene but I really do not like her as Rouge. The accent, the weak and pitiful screen presence that even a good script could not have changed, the look. I personally can't support that casting. Anyways, I wonder when they will bring Nightcrawler back.

Got a question for anyone that watched the old X-Men series: I have the vaguest of memories when I was like 7 or so in Winter in either Hereford, Wales or Northfolk where I and my cousin watched an episode that only really focused on Wolverine and Jubilee and something to do with Nightcrawler.

He had no lines but they'd show a brief clip of him crawling around and it was also snowing... anyone have any idea which episode that was at all? I believe my cousin bitched about the lack of other X-Men so if that seems familiar let me know the episode's name please.

I honestly don't think she'd do it. The prosthetics are tedious, so for her to go through the whole process for an entirely production where she is the sole star? I don't think she'd be interested in that. The process is a lot quicker now than it was in FC and previously but still it takes a long time.

LOL. Yeah 'cause both solo Wolverine movies were so much fun. Lets give an even less interesting character a solo movie. Using Lawrence would be the only thing that would make it even more dreadful simply because she's so miscast in the role. I could see Magneto getting a movie, but even that would be a stretch.

If a Mystique movie ever happened, it'd be made for one reason: Because Fox is trying to bank on Lawrence's Hunger Games fame while they can. No thanks.

I would'nt be interested in that. The tumblr crowd really loved J.L. but now a days people are basically just sick of seeing her. As an actor she's annoying and she has a sort of fake presence about her. I mean she threw up in public at an event.

I would like to see Lupita the actress in the film 12 years a slave to play Storm.

@MightyZeus

Eurgh, people complain that actresses are so fake, but you get Jennifer Lawrence who has been the exact same throughout her public career and people still complain she's fake. She's genuine, watch her interviews before she was famous.

When people have talent like that I don't think they should disappear and wow she has incredible talent especially at her age. Her performance in Winter's Bone was heartbreaking and should've gotten her the Oscar. She's still making a lot of money.

From the word go, she should've been different. Her personality should've been much deeper. I envisioned Giant-sized X-Men cast solo flicks where she plays heavily into Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Forge (who replaces Thunderbird). It's a Shane because she is like an evil, super powered Bond, like you said

@CherryBomb,

I do agree the actress does have talent and i actually don't mind her in The Hunger Games films and i don't mind her in the role of Mystique especially in First Class, giving her character weight and depth because i applaud the screen writers for doing an incredible job on each of it's character's in First Class.

Just as a person in general it's tiresome with her acting a little too out of control and having the media's attention focus on her and making it seem she's just like everyone else, with her mannerisms and actions it doesnt seem natural. If people really do love the person then that's fine but i do think the studio can focus on more ambitious and better projects eg. X-force, Deadpool and have Mystique featured in more X-men films.
