Ah yes, Sailor Moon. One of those shows from the 90s that many girls (myself included) grew up on. It was in fact, my first anime, preceding Pokemon even! Yeah, the story was a bit shallow, and the main character was a bit of a ditz and a klutz, but it was always fun to watch. The dub absolutely sucked, but it only made me appreciate the uncut series a lot more.
So, while on a nostalgia kick, I decided to cast a possible live action version of Sailor Moon! Whether or not it ever may come to be, I just wanted to have fun with this. It's partly wishful thinking, partly serious.
This part will deal with the "first season" with the core characters, villains and some of the supporting characters as well.
Enjoy!
The Sailor Senshi/Scouts
Usagi/Serena/Sailor Moon: Jayne Wisener. I will admit to only seeing her in "Sweeny Todd" but she was great in it. It helps that she's really naturally beautiful too, and in a way, even kind of looks like an anime character.
Ami/Sailor Mercury: Brea Grant. I always saw Sailor Mercury as a petite kind of girl, and Brea Grant really illustrates a strong side from her all-too-brief stint on Heroes. She can also play the insecure side of Ami's personality too, which makes her perfect in my eyes.
Raye/Sailor Mars: Katie Leung. Since Mars was definitely the most... erm, explicitly Asian character in the series, I think it makes sense to cast an actress of Asian descent. And Leung's made her name well in the Harry Potter movies, and a role like this could only help her star rise more.
Makoto/Lita/Sailor Jupiter: Nina Dobrev. Re-using someone from a previous casting call (my Wolverine/Deadpool one, if you were wondering), Nina Dobrev is quickly becoming a favorite actress of mine. She's really got a tough side to her that would lend itself well to Jupiter's character. It helps that she's also pretty tall and with the right amount of training, could really get the kind of toned, athletic body that Jupiter should have.
Minako/Mina/Sailor Venus: I have two choices for her...
Annalynne McCord, who's certainly able to play a fairly self-centered, but generally well meaning ditz.
Isabel Lucas, who's shown her potential well, and she's pretty to boot.
The Villains
Queen Beryl: Famke Janssen. I just really enjoy her as an actress, and she does have the kind of vibe for someone like Beryl. And there's no doubt she can pull off the look and the psychosis either.
Jadeite: Justin Hartley. Well, he's got the look, and the sort of arrogance to him that could lend itself well to the slightly sexist member of the Four Generals.
Nephrite: Matthew Bomer. I enjoy watching him as the arrogant, swaggering ex-con on White Collar. Just add a little more of a villainous and malicious touch, and he's good to go for Nephrite.
Zoisite: Kevin Zegers. One of the things that I couldn't stand about the dub was the fact that it changed Zoisite's gender. So from the moment I made this list, I decided to pick out a guy to portray the character. I've never thought of Zoisite as looking girly as many do and I've always thought that Zoisite would just have that air of villainy to him. So that's why I picked Zegers, who can definitely act, and still has that sort of pretty look to him.
Malachite: Sendhil Ramamurthy. Well, since Malachite has dark skin, I just thought Sendhil's looks would help it out a bit. Admittedly, this is somewhat of a bias from me. ^^;
Supporting Characters
Mamoru/Darien/Tuxedo Mask: There are two guys I have for the character. Now, there's no way I'm going to cast some wimpy looking pretty boy as Tuxedo Mask. You need someone who's tall, fairly built, and can look threatening. My two picks, I believe, have just that.
James Lafferty. Now unless there's some swirl of hatred for the CW around here, Lafferty is actually pretty enjoyable to watch, and he's got that handsome air to him.
Cory Monteith. My love of Glee strikes again, and Monteith is not just tall and built, but he's also got some good comedic timing that could lend itself well to the funnier moments in this.
Luna: Voiced by Rachel Weisz. One of the things that I actually liked about the dub was that it gave Luna a British accent, which is acceptable since she did come from more regal and refined times. However, she sometimes came across as more like a nanny. So I went for an actual British actress who could both exude that "older and wiser" vibe but also be a little comedic too, and I think Weisz can do just that.
Artemis: Voiced by Patrick Dempsey. Keep in mind that Artemis is largely a comic relief kind of character, and I think Patrick Dempsey can do just that. He even sounds like he could be both a guide and a source of funny moments.
Serena's Family: Jennie Garth as the mom, Kyle MacLachlan as the father, and Chandler Canterbury as the little brother (Sam). Jennie Garth because she's got that motherly vibe to begin with (being a mom of three daughters in real life), Kyle MacLachlan as the dad because he just has that "overprotective but well-meaning dad" look to him and Chandler Canterbury just looks like the perfect "annoying little brother."
Naru/Molly: Kay Panabaker. She's not a huge actress, and she's fairly youthful looking, so she would totally fit as the best friend/normal teenage girl of the series. Plus she's a natural redhead too.
Umino/Melvin: Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Oh, yeah, McLovin! Well, we need a guy who actually does look like a nerd, and Mintz-Plasse is perfect for it. Chika-chika yeah!
Motoki/Andrew: Jesse Spencer. Well, he's not terribly huge, mostly being known as "the cute guy from House." And he's that cute, everyday kind of guy who'd be a real sweetheart at winning a girl's affections, albeit, obliviously.
Queen Serenity: Kristen Chenoweth. I've loved her since seeing her in Wicked, adored her in Pushing Daisies, and I have no doubt she'd rock this role, as small as it is, and make it all her own.
A second part shall be coming soon! Stay tuned!
