Now, before I explain myself, I have always been rooting for this movie, since it was first announced. I've been a fan of the suit, and I don't think that Sony 'Twilighted' Spider-Man. Now let's begin.
The trailer, at least in my opinion, is probably one of the most symbolic thing's I've ever seen. As it opens up, we are shown a young Peter Parker's parents, leaving him with his Aunt and Uncle. This is the first kicker, the moment we as kids always hated; abandonment by the people that raised us. Not only is this probably the darkest part of the whole trailer, the mood very slowly rises as we see a teenage Peter Parker, loved by his Aunt and Uncle, and shunned by fellow peers. Although this is very sad, it is also the perfect set up to what some teenagers need: freedom.
We're then taken to Peter's crush, Gwen Stacy. Dinner at the Stacy's house remind us of Pete's tragic history, but that's when the trailer begins to speed up. Now the trailer shifts to a small flirtation between Gwen and Peter, and again we see that awkward teenager crush show through Peter. His path leads him to a fateful encounter, and well, as we all know the rest his history. But this is what the trailer does perfectly, after the spider bite, the tension builds. Peter's changing, and it's affecting his life drastically. This isn't a sad moment, but a moment of discovery. The tension keeps rising, "Are you ready to play god?" The stakes have just gotten biggeer.
The final POV scene probably was my favorite part. Everytime I've watched that it has made me smile. To me, that scene describes Peter Parker's ultimate freedom. This was who he was meant to be, and it's so relevant, because now we're viewing it through Spider-Man's eyes. Every step, jump, and crawl is emphasized because that's Spidey's freedom and gift. That's something I think we all some how desire; the ability to do as we want, and beat the limitations of reality.
One last pointer I want to bring up, and anyone who's seen the trailer in 3D attached to Captain America, can probably agree. The use of 3D isn't too prevailant, maybe they just aren't ready to fully blow out the 3D, but they only time in the trailer I noticed it was the room the spider bites Peter, and the final POV scene. The POV scene, although I understand why people will hate it, looks really awesome in 3D. The running and jumping really had effect with the 3D glasses. I only hope the rest of the movie has awesome 3D moments like that!
In conclusion, the trailer evolves its tones from dark, to discovery, and then finally to freedom, which is something I don't think we normally see. I HATE to be 'that guy' but hopefully I didn't over analyze the trailer, and maybe someone else has noticed it too. To me, the trailer made it perfectly clear that this movie is going to be so much more different from the Raimi movies, that it may even outshine their outdated and cheese filled movies. I'm not saying they weren't good movies, but Mark Webb sure looks like he's ready to make the Wall Crawler shine again, and maybe even redeem some of the qualities that fans missed in the last few movies. Either way, bring on The Amazing Spider-Man.
