Kevin Feige Discusses The Significance Of Death In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

A lot of fans weren't pleased when Agent Coulson was resurrected for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and after being asked whether Marvel ever seriously considered killing off Nick Fury in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kevin Feige has commented on whether death means DEATH in the MCU!

Talking to Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked whether Marvel actually ever considered pulling the trigger for real and killing off Samuel L. Jackson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. "We never actually discussed doing it, no," he confirmed. "Maybe as part of a very early general conversation. But it didn't go particularly far before the idea that ended up in the film came up." As for whether or not they have any plans to kill off a major character in Avengers: Age of Ultron or beyond and if such a death would be permanent, he added: "You never know. Again, we take our cues from the comics and everyone knows that in comics and soap operas, people die and come back. Except for Uncle Ben and Bucky, but oh! Bucky's going to come back and it's going to be awesome. When appropriate to the story, we certainly will not hesitate. Frigga is dead. She's not coming back. Big funeral." In fairness, while death not having lasting consequences in the MCU could be criticised, that IS how it's always worked in the comic books that these movies are based on! Regardless, Feige then went on to talk a little more about what to expect from The Avengers sequel now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone. "The dynamic certainly has changed. For us that was one of the benefits of doing this storyline - that it will force them to use something different in their next team-up than S.H.I.E.L.D., which basically provided the groundwork and the basis by which they assembled the first time."

Seeing as how coulson came back im guessing they're going to be just like the comics, where aside from a few people death doesn't matter and they will just keep bringing them back.

What's the point of having Fury alive if he's not working for SHIELD?

I think they should kill off a major character permanently in Age of Ultron.

Frigga death was weak but the funeral was powerful.

The only people that die in the MCU is villains. I mean, even Aldrich Killian, who survived the suit expleoding died.

Death is just a state of being. You pass on to the afterlife or other world but that doesn't mean you can't be resurrected if appropriate to the story. I just hope that they don’t bring people back willy nilly. They need to put rules on resurrection so that people just don’t go "Hey just use magic revive method". It should be difficult and messy to revive actual dead characters. I don’t mind bringing back mistakenly dead characters though.

"Lmao I forgot Aldrich Killian died from a pole swung by Pepper"

Actually he died from Pepper using her extremis powers to rip the arm off an Iron Man suit and throw a tank missile at him using the repulsor to explode the missile causing him to over-heat destroying him.

Coulson dying was lame motivation for the Avengers to band together and then bringing him back was lame because Clark Gregg can't carry a show.

You do realise what happens in 'The Infinity Gauntlet' right? EVERYONE DIES! The Avengers are slaughtered in arguably the biggest massacre of all time.

They'll kill off EVERY member in Avengers 3 except one character who will get the Gauntlet and reverse time and bring them back to life before they defeat Thanos.
