FANTASTIC FOUR Star Toby Kebbell Shares Regrets About Playing A "Goofy" Doctor Doom In 2015 Movie

Fantastic Four star Toby Kebbell has opened up on his experience working on the 2015 movie, explaining why he believes the issues with the reboot actually started at the top. He also shares some regrets...

Fantastic Four was released in 2015 to negative reviews and dismal box office numbers. It's no secret that creative interference from 20th Century Fox and producer Simon Kinberg had an impact on director Josh Trank's vision, which actor Toby Kebbell alluded to during a recent interview with Forbes.

The actor played Doctor Doom in the reboot, but like the version played by Julian McMahon in the previous Fantastic Four movies, it was not a particularly good take on the villain. In fact, he was downright comical, and Kebbell admitted to being disappointed with the way things turned out.

"You know, I'll be entirely honest...I don't think we were a victim of timing, I think we were a victim of bad leadership and organization," the actor revealed. "I mean in charge, in charge, not people creating and working on set. So there were unfortunate things. In Hollywood, you can't ever speak ill and I'm not doing that, I'm just saying while I was there, there was a lot more that could have been done to make that a better thing. There's fans for it. I truly believe it."

"I truly believe Doom is an awesome villain, he's an excellent villain and they kind of always just do something goofy with it. It's a shame," Kebbell continued. "I honestly feel that way. I wouldn't have gone into it thinking, 'Ah, this is going to be another terrible movie.' I thought they had that."

"Why that effort wasn't put in, I don't know. But, yeah I know none of those people will call me back to work with them, so the truth as I see it is that more could have been done by the powers that be. So I hope, I truly hope, that someone does create a great version because I truly believe...I'm a big fan of Doom as a character. He's awesome. So, yeah. I hope they do it just right."

With so much speculation surrounding Trank, it's interesting how quick Kebbell is to point out that the problem was actually with those higher up the pecking order. This echoes what the filmmaker has said, and while we may never know what really happened on the set of Fantastic Four, it was a wasted opportunity. The cast was talented, and it was a different approach to Marvel's First Family that could have easily fit into the aesthetic of the Marvel Universe Fox had created at the time.

Now, Marvel Studios will reboot the Fantastic Four franchise with Spider-Man director Jon Watts.

This dude gets it. And I don't blame him for the stench of the movie. Dude was just reading his lines like any other actor.

The MCU has some serious pressure now to get Doom right.

@KWilly - Ironically, I would contend that the MCU has even less pressure to "get it right" due to the overwhelming stench of Doom's prior depictions.

@EskimoJ - They don't have a high bar to clear, yeah. But they can't afford to get it wrong this time. Three strikes, you're out.

@KWilly - Let’s hope Doom doesn’t get the curse of Green Goblin. Where some exec just can’t fathom we want the green villain we know & love.

@KWilly - Jon Watts is amazing with villains in the Spider-Man movies so I have no doubt that Dr Doom will also be amazing

@KWilly -
I hope they do a better job with Doom than Kingpin and a lot of their other villains.

I don't want to see Doom turned into a cardboard villain that gets killed off in the first Fantastic Four movie.

@KWilly - Yeah his Black Mirror episode was amazing, so he's a good actor. Kinda like a young andy serkis to me as he did a lot of motion capture for the planet of the apes and kong franchise. He was Koba

@KWilly - But the funny thing is….EVERYONE will know Dr. Doom when he is done correctly. The roadmap and guideline to bringing this character to life can be found in almost 60 years of great comics. Follow Stan and Jack…and Byrne…..and do what they did. The problem seems to be Hollywood sometimes out smarts itself. And the result is often the Josh Trank debacle in question.

@NoobNoob -
Did I say that? He's definitely not dead, but his portrayal in the Hawkeye finale was still embarrassing and anticlimactic.

And while I expected him to get a power boost in the MCU, it seemed like they were doing everything in their power to make it as unbelievable as humanly possible. Having him rip open a car door without even straining and then surviving getting hit by a speeding vehicle. Were they trying to be jarring on purpose? Some of the footage I posted almost looks like a parody. His "death" cliffhanger at the end was also rushed and completely unearned.

Parts of the movie are good but it goes to shit. His Doom was shit from the get go.

The design aside, when he first turns up and crushed that guys head, I thought he could’ve saved the film. As it is, it’s the only part of the film I remember. Despite being a big Wolverine fan, it’s Doom I’m most looking forward to in the MCU. He’s Marvel’s best villain imo in fact the only villain better in entertainment would be Joker. So we’ve had nothing but massively underwhelming iterations.

CorndogBurglar - 2/10/2022, 11:55 AM
@SamaelSaint - I truly believe that Sinister has the potential to be up there with Doom and Joker. As long as they don't take this weird, comical, flamboyant Sinister from recent comic years.

If they make him the mastermind that he should be, with his hands in nearly every tragic event that the X-Men have ever faced? And make him serious and an evil genius? He could one of the greatest villains we'll ever see on screen.
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 2/10/2022, 12:41 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I have an issue with villains who had a hand in most things that came prior and that’s the fact it undermines all other villains that came before them. Like Bane was so underwhelming when it was revealed it was Talia all along. Or Blofeld in the Daniel Craig Bond films. As long as they don’t undermine anything that’s come before it then it’s all good. There’s always potential when the right writers and actors come in. Killmonger for example, not exactly a great villain in the comics, but personally for me the best we’ve had in the MCU until Dafoe’s Goblin.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/10/2022, 1:53 PM
@SamaelSaint - I agree. But thats the cool thing about Sinister. He didn't undermine any other villains. When you look at the worst things to happen to the X-Men, you've basically got Dark Phoenix which he wasn't involved in. There's infant Cable getting infected with the techno virus, which Sinister wasn't involved in.

Then you've got the Mutant Massacre, which he orchestrated. And even though we hadn't seen him yet, you knew that the Marauders were lackeys pulling a job for someone else the whole time. In fact, I believe that story was the first time we heard Sinister's name, when Psylocke read one of the Marauder's minds and saw a silhouette of Sinister.

Then we've Angel losing his feathered wings, which happened during the Mutant Massacre. He got staked to a wall by his wings and they became crippled, which lead to the creation of Archangel and his downward spiral into a dark character. (And Apocalypse giving him metal wings and turning him into the Horseman Death)

Sinister released the Legacy Virus on the world at the end of X-Cutioner's Song. This was actually one of the only times anyone actually got one over on him, because Stryfe brought the Legacy Virus from the future and tricked Sinister into thinking it was the Summers' family genetic code. So Sinister opened it. And countless characters died from the Legacy Virus over several years in the comics. Including Colossus and Illyana.

Then there's Madelyne Prior, the clone of Jean Grey who obviously caused all kinds of problems for Cyclops and the X-Men/X-Factor.

Then Inferno, which he was completely behind, and was the whole master plan for creating Madelyn Prior.

So even though he's been involved in all that stuff, at no point did we think it was another villain, then later revealed to be him. This was all him, which in my mind takes him from being a cheap villain that undermined others, to the X-Men's worst villain. No other X-Men villain has even come close to causing that many serious issues for the X-Men. Not even Magneto or Apocalypse.

@SamaelSaint - I wish Dafoe’s Osborn/Goblin could get the screentime/room to develop and breathe of a Loki or Thanos or that Kang may be getting. Every second he’s on screen is fire.

@CorndogBurglar - I think it depends how they choose to do X-Men as a whole. If they develop it the same way they’ve done the MCU so far then there’d be an awful lot of undermining going on. If they instead choose to I just go all out and give about 20 characters solo films/shows as well as team up films and shows, then there’d be so much going that you could do it. X-Men are definitely big enough for that, in fact X-Men is quite a lot bigger and better than what we’ve had. Depends how invested they’d be in it though and whether you can get that many actors together combined with contracts for that long. We’re going to get to a stage where Marvel will have open casting calls.

You were not the problem Toby, it was 20th century fox greedy ass all the way around.

F4 is back at home and i'm eager to see what Marvel Studios can do with it, hope Feige gives Toby another chance in the MCU if possible.

I really liked the casting of this movie, I was fine with all the F4 members, and Kebbel as Doom was also fine.

But the writing was totally forgettable. And I'm one of the guys who prefers deeper moving story rather than action every 10 minutes, but this movie seriously lacked action.
