How Fantastic Are They?

My thoughts on Marvel's First Family

Every time I go to the comic book store, and it is a meager week with only a few books, I feel this urge, if not need, to buy a Fantastic Four book. Its not that I find them particularly interesting, in fact I find them lame and out-dated, but it was one of the books that put Marvel on the Map. Don't they deserve my money?

So I pick up the book and flip through it, and again I get an urge, except this time I don't want to buy it, at all. In reality, none of their powers are particularly strong or useful, and it takes 4 of them to beat anyone. In the past, Spider-Man has taken on Doom by himself and won.

Does anyone else feel this way about any of the books that they buy or don't buy?

Fantastic 4 put Marvel on the map in the early sixties. Back then, they were interesting enough but got easily eclipsed 2 years later by the X-men. After that, the only thing that made Fantastic 4 worth reading was the "team-ups" and "cross overs" they had with better heroes. That is also why the movies weren't as good as any other comicbook movie. They have nothing to offer that is not already surpassed by others. Quaintly put, they suck and should die in the next epic storyline. Personally, i find that Reed Richards and Ben Grimm are what's slowing down they're popularity. Thing will never de as cool or as strong as Hulk and Reed's smarts have already been more than matched by Tony Stark, Hank Pym, Bruce Banner and countless others. They are of no use and the "storm" family would do better as a duo!

I do agree Shaman, Human Torch has been known to be extremely powerful, and Sue Storm!!! man, she can become not only invisible but turn anything she wants invisible as well!!!, not only that but she can create indestructible force fields!!! Now thing, he seems kind of bland compared to others (as you point out), but I always thought it was funny how Jhonny made him mad, Reed, I always saw him as a egotistical scientist; he really thinks he's the best and he... well.... he has done some good things, unstable molecules come to mind, but he's far from being as smart as he thinks he is. Although he apparently can't keep track of his inventions, everyone in the marvel universe has unstable molecules at their disposal, every villain has unstable molecules to make their costumes. It would be really cool if they did kill Reed and Ben, but kill them for real, no comeback stories.

I say kill Reed and Ben by disintegrating their body and soul. By one of Reed's own experiments no less. Have Sue and Johnny join the Avengers! Johnny, not having Ben to make angry, now turns to the god of thunder... now that's funny!!!

Whoa whoa whoa! FF is not weak. Sue Storm is one of the most powerful Marvel characters. Her power is nearly limitless, only inhibited by her imagination. Human Torch is a Demi-God. not only can he control fire, but he can create it too. The Thing has tangled the Hulk on more occasions than I Know of, and that takes some tough nuggets in my book. Reed Richards is a [wiener] though so amen to Shaman's suggestion to disintigrate himself with his own experiment. Sue Storm is one of my Favorite all time Hero's though and I'll be writing a Character biop like tthe Gambit one i did soon.

Yes well myth, you just confirmed my point. Sue and Johnny are the only two characters that are worth it. So put them in avengers and kill off the other two. I mean seriously, what's THING's purpose? He sucks. We already have HULK which is everything thing can't be. Everytime he went against HULK, THING lost. He's worthless.

I COMPLETELY agree that the F4 are kinda lame. but they all make great supporting cast for the Big Marvel story events... look at Civil War, Secret Invasion, hell even the whole Onslaught mess. And TheMyth is right about Sue, she is the coolest of all 4. I just wish she'd kill Reed and get with Namor already
