Barbie is already shaping up to be one of the most controversial movies of the summer.

The film is set to open worldwide on July 21, but Greta Gerwig's comedic take on the iconic Mattel fashion doll line won't be making its way to Vietnam.

According to the New York Times, the movie has been banned in the country due to one shot of a map showing the disputed "nine-dash line" – a U-shaped line used in Chinese maps to stake its claim on territory in the South China Sea.

China and Vietnam are involved in a long-running dispute over ownership of the territory, which contains several islands, as well as oil and gas deposits and shipping lanes. Although an international tribunal at The Hague ruled that China had no legal basis for its claims back in 2016, the Middle Kingdom refuses to accept those findings.

The National Film Appraisal and Classification Board ultimately made the decision to ban the movie outright, with Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Vietnam Cinema Department, confirming to state media that Barbie would not screen in the region because of "the illegal image of the ‘cow’s tongue line’ in the film.”

We're not sure if this will have any significant impact on the movie's global box office takings, but it looks like the Philippines are considering following suit for the same reason.

"The Philippines, like Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia, have competing claims in the South China Sea and strongly refute China’s claim to nearly the entire maritime region. If the invalidated 9-dash line was indeed depicted in the movie Barbie, then it is incumbent upon the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to ban the same as it denigrates Philippine sovereignty,” said Philippines Senator Francis Tolentino, vice chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee.

We've almost used to seeing movies banned in certain locations in the Middle East for depictions of LGBTQ+ characters or situations, but one quick shot of a map is definitely a new one!

You can check out the "offending" image in question below.

From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) comes Barbie, which also stars America Ferrera (End of Watch, the How to Train Your Dragon films), Kate McKinnon (Bombshell, Yesterday), Issa Rae (The Photograph, Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams, Matilda), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films, Talladega Nights), and more.

Gerwig directs from a screenplay she penned alongside Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale), based on the iconic fashion dolls by Mattel.

The film’s producers are Oscar nominee David Heyman (Marriage Story, Gravity), Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, with Gerwig, Baumbach, Ynon Kreiz, Richard Dickson, Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich and Cate Adams serving as executive producers.

I never thought I’d live to see the day where a Barbie movie is banned in multiple countries for referencing the 9 dash line.

@mountainman - I never thought Id live to see the day there was a barbie live action movie being made that some people would actually pay to see.

@Reginator - It looks entertaining and vibrant. I've been a fan of Greta Gerwig's direction since seeing Frances Ha and I'm looking forward to what she can do with the IP.

Welcome to the days where people will pay to see things that interest them!

@Reginator - Yeah that’s part of what I’m saying. The fact that a Barbie movie that is being taken seriously is happening, it includes something like this that is completely unnecessary just to appeal to the Chinese market, and is banned in two countries because of it is peak current year.

@TheRose - people have always paid to see what interests them, the surprise is that a studio thinks there is enough people interested to make a profit from this. Although after the bombs ant-man and flash it really shouldnt be a surprise that studios make poor decisions.

@mountainman - of course Hollywood is going to shill for communist China.

The film will also be loaded with all of the other social programming; women don’t need men and they should be detached from long-term, committed relationships. And men are bumbling idiots.

@Reginator - Is it really a surprise that one of the most successful toy franchises of all time would have appeal? They've made big-budget Transformers and G.I. Joe movies, so I don't see why the addition of Barbie is such a shock.

Is there any more consistent 'Hate Train' in the world, than against WB?
I'm excited to see what this movie actually is.
Meanwhile, I get people here responding to me that "It's only going to appeal to a very small amount of audience at the theater, prepare for flop"
People write shit like that.

Are you guys so entrenched that EVERY SINGLE THING that you intake has to be filtered by "WHAT STUDIO MADE THIS"?

Just [frick]ing wait for this director to be swooped up by James Gunn. A studio head WHO ACTUALLY understands creatives and will give them free reign to pitch their vision.

I wouldn't be surprised to see her get Wonder Woman. OR ALSO POSSIBLY a lot of other stuff.
But she sure isn't going to be doing a Marvel movie, because we all know the hassle and tired consequences that come with that.
Pretty soon... NO ONE IS GOING TO want to work with Marvel at all. They are at the dogshit bottom of the barrel right now. Any great actor that signs is going to have an Emilia Clarke pulled on them. I know she'll be back in Secret Invasion even after her fake outcome. But point remains, they are going to be nothings just directed to be placeholders on the studio line for fake movies to be written around them.

NO WONDER they have problems signing people like Driver for Reed.
NO WONDER, he's asking for a payday up front. He has no reason to trust their integrity, and no reason to think that he's not going to be treated like a clown and thrown away.
You reap what you sow. THAT IS EXACTLY WHY this FF casting drama is going on for so long.

NOBODY WANTS TO WORK FOR MARVEL. Not unless they get paid ridiculous amounts.
PATHETIC. You guys will immediately see with Gunn, and this last two weeks, you HAVE ALREADY SEEN.
He gets the actors HE WANTS.

unlike pussy Feige.

To add on to this.

It's COMICAL to think that you guys actually believed MARGOT ROBBIE would slum as low as being SUE STORM.
MORE DELUSION. That's never going to happen.

LOL. That you guys even thought that says a lot ABOUT YOU.

@TempleRod - Marvel has certainly upset it’s fair share of directors. Edgar Wright and Scott Derickson come to mind.

But you can’t deny that Chloe Zhao, Ryan Coogler, and Taika Waititi certainly had their styles imprinted on their movies.

You may not like those movies, but the directors were not handcuffed. Heck even the replacement for Derickson - Raimi - certainly had his influence on Dr Strange MoM.

And WB/DC does it too. They threw Snyder to the curb during Justice League production. How many directors did the Flash have?

The MCU may have more dictates due to the continuity and the 30+ movies that have lead up to where we are today, but it’s just silly to imply they are the only studio that doesn’t let directors have 100% free reign.

Getting into a studio war comment over a Barbie movie is pretty silly dude.

Barbie being a geopolitical lightning rod because some production designer's assistant got too playful with a toy map is wild, haha
TempleRod
TempleRod - 7/6/2023, 7:32 AM
@tmp3 - Another Wild thing.
Is I saw a couple weeks ago, some conservative group urging to boycott Barbie, and to see Oppenheimer instead. Like some kind of 'male pride' alpha thing.
Even in our own country, People are just attaching random emotional and nationalistic values to things they entirely DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
And the real joke is that the more 'Misunderstandable' a thing is, the easier it is to get nutjobs to align with you.
So it rewards a system that purposefully obfuscates reality. It rewards a system of untruths. Just to muddy EVERY POSSIBLE WATER.
That's the world we are living in.

To characterize as 'wild' or 'crazy' or 'funny' or whatever. I get it. I really do.
But the reality is that we are screwed. They mean to nullify any genuine concern about this world. And turn it into a joke.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 7/6/2023, 7:39 AM
The maddening thing is, That IN REALITY, we all live in the same world.
So why does seem to be this bent towards [frick]ing up this world.
Via anti-Climate Change science, or anti-Vaccine science, or whatever weird fringe shit.
You could take your pick of a thousand bizarre conspiracy things.
It really does seem like a nihilistic urge. Like the people pushing these kind of theories, must have a destructive impulse driving them.
I can't imagine any actual lucid person espousing this shit, unless they are a total Nihilist.

And I just don't understand what's in it for those powers. It's clear that society will entirely collapse and they will no longer have 'people working for them' anymore. They will no longer have any support structure to keep them safe.

I just do not understand this urge from the top to destroy society.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/6/2023, 8:27 AM
@tmp3 - There may be an implication - or even a modicum of truth - that would say this would be dictated by China in order to boost box office there.

I’d go with your explanation over that theory, but it isn’t 100% outside of the realm of possibility.

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time a Hollywood studio has cow towed to China. John Cena’s embarrassing apology for calling Taiwan a country is an example of this.

But yeah this whole “controversy” is silly.

@ObserverIO - Those lists are fun. I like how they differ, and what is similar - like how Thai food is deservingly on every list (+ a few others).

I am now picturing Steve watching the 1966 World Cup finals and being totally underwhelmed because he’s an old school American that finds soccer boring - even great soccer.
