Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies had a very happy New Year as it dominated the North American box office on Thursday with $9.3 million at 3,875 theaters. That's a 55% surge from its $6 million gross on New Year's Eve. The film has been in North American theaters for 16 days and now has a total of $198 million. Based on those numbers it will top $200 million earlier today, which will make it the 12th 2014 film to top that benchmark.

The New Line-MGM tentpole is 10% ahead of 2013’s “The Desolation of Smaug” at the same point and 7% behind 2012’s “An Unexpected Journey.” - Variety

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 added $2.89 million to its domestic take on Thursday, pushing its domestic total to $316 million. It is inching closer and closer to dethroning Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy ($332.7M) as the top performing 2014 film at the domestic box office.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

SPOILERS: I'm excited for the extended one because there were a lot of things missing from the trailer and the visual guide book. In the trailer there was a charge of dwarves on rams, but it was missing from the movie and thorin just jumps on a ram out of nowhere, when clearly none actually showed up. Saruman goes, leave sauron to me, then we never see anything, when the visual guide shows Sauron handing over the palentir. And gandalf never actually says, how shall this day end.
