The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is out on Blu-ray and DVD now, with the special editions coming in October/November.

The movie was not long at all IMO. It just takes time to build up an epic movie. The Hobbit was the build up. Desolation of Smaug will jump right into the action. There and Back again will be the EPIC showdown.

I disagree. I feel Jackson is a MUCH more versatile director than Lucas. I feel Lucas is a director that gives you eye candy. That's one of the reason Star wars is such a hit today. Back then, those Visual Effects seemed impossible to do. IMO Star Wars was nothing but eye candy. Although I love the trilogy, not the best out there. I would rank LOTR, spider man, and the dark knight trilogies above Star wars.

And with LOTR, back in 2001 it was nothing but a great book. But Peter Jackson made it a pop culture Icon. WHile I agree The Hobbit is the worst in the LOTR saga, I still feel it's far from being just OK (No offense).

I do respect your opinion though, not everyone like the same thing.

@grif my sentiments exactly
hoping they add the eagles eyerie... pretty miffed they went straight to beorns carrock... no gandalf and the eagles talking was a bummer
but great movie all the same

@sansClaymore They didn't go straight to Beorn's Carrock though. Nowhere is that implied in the movie. Obviously it's not the Eagles eyries but it most likely just some random mountaintop. In the book, Beorn didn't live that high up on the peak of a mountain, and his Carrock wasn't located there either. I'm just as pissed that they most likely won't be shown to talk though.

While I really disliked this movie, I do enjoy parts of this deleted scene. Besides the fact that this scene is beating us over the head with the unnecessary conflict of the Dwarves not liking Bilbo for some reason (although it's really only Thorin, but it's still unexplained), I do like the part where Bilbo says that one should never ask Elves for advice, since they say both "yes" and "no". Straight from the FOTR book, so I enjoyed that. Too bad the rest of the movie couldn't make faithful adaptions from the books like this scene did.

oh trust me i know my tolkien lol
the rock the eagles dropped them at may still be considered the eyerie who knows it was the end of part one and they didnt say. and yet if you look close, it is carved into the shape of a bears head, ears and all. so who knows what this "rock" is, yet as it hasnt been said yet whether it is the eyerie or the carrock. but like the carrock it is situated between two rivers in the movie just like the book. so i speculate admittedly... but the bear shape and staircase tell me its the carrock.

your right beorn actually lives much further south along the border of mirkwood, i didnt imply otherwise, but the carrock is still his land and i cant wait to see the giant honey bees and bears that guard the house at night!

well not two rivers but an island of sorts where the river can be forded, the Anduin i believe, there are many such carrocks as beorn calls them.
and though in the movie it looks like it is still high up in the mountains, i postulate it is indeed on the edge of the misty mountains where the hills meet the river.
we'll see come december!

I like Extended Editions like this, the scenes fit in the movie like it's always have been there. Just like the Extended Edition of the LOTR trilogy is better than the theatrical ones.

@sansClaymore Wow I can tell! You'd have to be a tolkien nerd to even attempt reading the Silmarillion. I read it once a few years ago, but I barely remember a thing from it. I try to read the LOTR books at least once every year or so, I've have to re-read the Silmarillion sometime after that!

As for the rock the Eagles drop them off at, I definitely never noticed a bear shape at all.

I'm curious though, did you enjoy the Hobbit? As a huge fan of the books and someone who enjoyed the LOTR movie trilogy (it has its flaws, for sure), I really disliked the Hobbit. I didn't feel like it was faithful to the book at all.

@SauronsBANE1 - It seems like you haven't read everything then since the movie is not an adaptation of the book but an adaptation of the timeline surrounding the book. You would have to had read the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth in order to know the events Tolkien created in order to lift the tale of the Hobbit into the level of LOTR after he had originally presented it as a one-of childrens book.

The Silmarillion is the best tale out of everything Tolkien wrote despite not being finished to its full dramatized account. Its cast of characters dwarf the lesser versions in the later tales, the events and the battles are so huge they eventually include the Gods themselves and reshape the entire lands of middle earth. The scope of the tale simply leaves everything else in its wake, its incredible.
