FANTASTIC BEASTS Star Johnny Depp May Be Gearing Up For Hollywood Comeback Following Recent Cannes Premiere

Johnny Depp was ousted from the Fantastic Beasts franchise during his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, but insiders believe the time may now be right for him to step back into the Hollywood spotlight.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's legal battle saw their personal lives and indiscretions put on display for the whole world to see, effectively ruining each of their respective Hollywood careers. Depp's ex-wife, who will be seen in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom later this year, has reportedly left the spotlight for a quiet life in Italy, while the Fantastic Beasts and Pirates of the Caribbean star has just made something of a comeback at Cannes.

While Depp was quick to laugh off talks of a resurgence and Hollywood return, the lengthy standing ovation the actor received at the film festival certainly appears to have opened the door to him stepping back into the spotlight.

Despite being accused of domestic abuse by Heard, he was victorious in their defamation battle and it appears Hollywood is ready to welcome him back into the fold.

IndieWire (via SFFGazette.com) spoke to a number of agents, producers, and screenwriters about Depp following Jeanne du Barry's premiere, and it sounds like we could be about to see a lot more of him on our screens. However, there are some conditions.

"He would have a better chance of working in the U.S. if he looked a little better. He looks bloated and unhealthy in the few photos I’ve seen of him recently — he doesn’t look like a movie star to me," one insider said. "If he gets in great shape and if he’s professional (on time, knows his lines, etc.) on the films he works on now, I think Hollywood will cast him in leads again."

Another adds, "People have short memories. [I] think it will be same for Depp — unless he continues to be out of control during shooting. That has been a major black mark against him."

"He is a great actor so I think he is hirable. The question is what price," someone else tells the site. "My gut says 2-4 [million]. And I am sure the streamers would let him co-lead a series."

For the time being, Depp doesn't have any acting roles lined up. While he was ousted from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, that series reached its end after the last instalment (which replaced Depp with Mads Mikkelsen) flopped. Could Disney add him to a future Pirates of the Caribbean movie? He's still featured in the theme park ride, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

How would you feel about seeing Depp back in theaters on a regular basis?

This was for City of Lies… the Tupac/Biggie DTV murder mystery he made a few years back. Depp also hasn’t turned in a good performance since Black Mass.

I’ll always appreciate him as an actor but his best days are behind him.

@regularmovieguy - Yep, has been and will always been an abusive piece of shit. Same dudes on this board complaining about Ezra Miller getting a pass are somehow blind to the same shit happening with Depp.

he would be perfect for a modest budget Riddler movie.

He would also be a good pick for The Question

I hope he does more smaller movies vs big budget stuff. Was never a huge fan of the Pirates movies (first 2 are good enough), and his Mad Hatter and Willy Wonka were both poor takes.

But Black Mass, Sweeney Todd, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diary, Blow, and many of his other roles are amazing. He really is one of the greatest actors of our generation.

@mountainman - EXACTLY. if he went specifically for the smaller roles he could do incredible and unexpected work for the rest of his career. No reason why he couldn’t go small and have a renaissance that way.

@maxx - He’s made his money from the big studio stuff and I think he’s over the studio politics. Dude could do indies and mid budget stuff and do just fine. I wouldn’t mind seeing him adapt a few more Hunter S Thompson books, since both movies he’s done so far have been great.

@maxx - Oh man I miss the Maxx, feels like a fever dream from my childhood that nobody else knew existed lol. Just rewatched the MTV animated version a couple weeks ago it still holds up, I'm surprised it hasn't been adapted in live action by HBO or something yet

@UncleHarm1 -

MTV's "MAXX",

in it's current incarnation is a masterwork, that both captures Sam Keith's brilliant line work, and masterfully delves into abstractions touching on themes grappling with mental illness
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 5/21/2023, 10:23 AM
@Scripturepoetic - It works so well as a self contained story about Maxx and Julie, and watching it as an adult I really appreciated the Sarah character who thinks she needs to be a writer because she's depressed and edgy lol. Kinda a great commentary on what comics were at the time but also recontextualizes the plot when you see Maxx's violence through her perspective later, gets super dark.

The Outback reminds me of my favorite stuff from the Hellboy comics, stuff that was sorely missing from his movies. I could see a live action Maxx adaptation watering things down in the same way and it'd be real disappointing.

@UncleHarm1 - holy crap i just saw your message! Doesn’t watching an episode today completely take you back to that liquid TV vibe? Aeon Flux and all of them? ‘Fever Dream’ is EXACTLY how i’ve tried to describe it to people.

And it’s not even just the show, but the whole MTV mindset that existed at that time. I don’t know if we’ll ever see it again. I could never get into any of the cartoon network shows that had big followings, either. Maxx and all the ones of that time were one of a kind.
maxx
maxx - 6/28/2023, 7:47 PM
@Scripturepoetic - yup, this exactly. Sam Keith is what set this one apart. The back and forth between the world and the outback was very special to me for how they portrayed mental illness. naturally a lot of it went over my head at the time, but even thinking about the show today takes me right back.

I’ve always wondered which director would get a live adaptation right. It can’t be anything straightforward. Somebody who really understands the subconscious like David Lynch or even some of Bill Hader’s work might be the right fit.

@maxx - David Lynch's The Maxx would be a trip lol I would kill to see this

God I hope not. The man is disgusting, never mind not handing in a good performance for over 10 years. Keep him well away from any form of success
dracula
dracula - 5/20/2023, 3:15 PM
@Cap1 - too late for that, his film was a big hit at cannes and now he is directing a movie with an all star cast.

he won
Cap1
Cap1 - 5/20/2023, 3:33 PM
@dracula - ‘big hit’ lol it was panned by critics, and the cannes audience are hardly known for their trustworthiness (but are known for their support of abusers). ‘All star cast’ is also a bit precarious, bar Al Pacino it’s very un-all star
dracula
dracula - 5/20/2023, 3:43 PM
@Cap1 - just looked up the reviews, they are mixed. But Depp’s performance is consistently praised.

Not an abuser, who had medical records? Depp. Who had documentation of their injuries? Depp. Who had witnesses who actually saw abuse take place? Depp.
Who’s witnesses had consistent versions of events? Depp.
Who was said to always run away from fights? Depp.

Who has a history of domestic violence? Heard.
Who wanted to keep fighting when Depp would run away? Heard.
Who used the same photos for two different incidents? Heard.

Whether you agree with it or not, fact is Depp won and cleared his name.

Cap1
Cap1 - 5/20/2023, 3:47 PM
@dracula - lmao wild the extent people will go to on this website to back up an abuser who they don’t know. Ur delusional dude, as are the majority of people supporting him on this page. Cba wasting my time going into this again. All best
BigPhilbowski
BigPhilbowski - 5/20/2023, 3:48 PM
@dracula - he also lost another case which proved he was an abuser. Hell even the evidence in the case he won proved he was abusive
dracula

@Cap1 - feel free to keep ignoring facts and keep supporting the chick who lied about vicious rape and used sick children to get a big pay day
dracula
dracula - 5/20/2023, 3:54 PM
@BigPhilbowski - a case against a newspaper. Where he couldnt properly face his accuser.

Also where the fact that she “donated” the money to charity was used in their favor as if she wasnt a gold digger.

Depp had police, security and bystanders backing him

Heard had people who were mooching off of Depp
