THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER - Check Out Over 20 Character Posters For Upcoming Amazon Series

Amazon just dropped nearly two dozen posters for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but they're a little more cryptic than what you might be expecting. Check all of them out after the jump...

More than 20 character posters for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have been released by Amazon Prime today, but there's a catch: we don't actually get to see any of their faces!

Anyway, we're assuming the marketing team in charge of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power doesn't have a serious hand fetish. Instead, it appears the idea is to drive home the fact that any one of these characters could end up wielding the rings that were forged prior to the original trilogy.

It's also a clever way to create speculation about who is who and what significance the props and costumes have. Of all the posters here, that Dark Lord's gauntlet is particularly intriguing. While it's easy to assume that it's Sauron, we'd bet on it belonging to that iconic villain's master, Morgoth.

Shot in New Zealand, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's first season cost a whopping $465 million to produce. We recently learned that it takes place during "the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history," bring us "back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness."

"Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth," the synopsis continues. "From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Friday, September 2.

Extremely bland posters, gives me YA/Wheel of Time vibes, which is not good. I’ll wait for the trailer ofc to properly judge

@Cap1 - But its going to be the most expensive tv show in history. Amazon is putting a lot of money into each episode to make sure it fits alongside Peter Jackson's films unlike the cheaper Marvel and Star Wars tv show. Each episode has a budget of 58 million USD. So unlike GoT, Star Wars, and Marvel there's a higher chance it will focus on the main continuity and fantasy elements of the books rather than cutting corners like cheaper tv shows like Game of Thrones and D+ shows.

@mastakilla39 - nothing u said has anything to do with what I said lmao. just cos it’s got a big budget doesn’t suddenly mean these posters aren’t intensely bare of creativity. And none of those shows u mentioned cut corners with their budget loool what are u on

@Cap1 -

gives me YA/Wheel of Time vibes

Personally, a lot of the fantasy films and shows, even the big blockbuster ones, feel YA to me. It's just a genre I have trouble taking too seriously BUT that doesn't mean it can't be entertaining.

It all depends on if the story is compelling. If it is, I'd be willing to overlook even a low-budget adventure. YA isn't a kiss of death, but something tells me this show won't look like a YA series. We'll see.

As far as the posters, they're fine to me for a set of themed advertisements. The genre itself leans towards fanciful outfits and armor that can easily look silly or like LARPing and medieval festivals. I actually think they're more creative than the film posters which was more of "paint-by-numbers" action template.

@Cap1 - Season 1 cost more to make than the movie trilogy.

@marvel72 - why are u and this other guy telling me the budget is big ??? It literally has nothing to do with my comment lool I am losing my mind

@Humperdink - Oh i’m not saying YA is inherently bad, but LOTR having even a hint of YA is wildly wrong. The genre does lean into it, sure, but LOTR doesn’t. Tolkien created a functional high fantasy world. The outfits look fine, but the swords are over designed. Like I said i’ll hold judgement till the trailers as judging off these cheap posters would be harsh, it just doesn’t fill me with hope

@Cap1 - I absolutely agree. The designs for the original LOTR have a feel of real history, rather than fantasy wankery. I’m seeing a little too much “imagination” going into some of this stuff. The biggest mistake would be to try to one-up what came before. The Hobbit already made that blunder. This is exactly what I’ve been wary of with this series.

Still cautiously optimistic about this. Really hoping for its success because I’d love to see Silmarillion adapted, which is a far more ambitious project

bkmeijer2 - 2/3/2022, 11:57 AM
@MrDandy - is the Second Age (which this adapts) based on part of the Silmarillion?

Also, thought someone mentioned in a previous Rings of Powers article that the Tolkien estate doesn't wanna let go of the First Age rights (which I guess is the major part of the Silmarillion)
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/3/2022, 12:01 PM
@bkmeijer - Silmarillion for the most part focuses on the first age and before the first age. Whereas Lord of the Rings is more classic High Fantasy, Silmarillion is more Tolkien’s take on gods of Olympus. It focuses on the formation of middle earth, the religion, and the gods (valar). Most of the struggle is based on Morgoth and his stealing of the elven silmarills and his war on the northern part of middle earth.

This is based on Tolkien’s many history texts about the second age and things mentioned in Lord of the Rings

@MrDandy -
This is honestly going to be the worst dumpster fire of a show you have ever seen. The impact of this is going to destroy faith in Amazon adaptations of prior media.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 2/3/2022, 2:36 PM
@MrDandy - honestly, I think it might just be better that this is a bunch of stuff strung together by (I assume) one story. I think that leaves a) more creative freedom for the writers, and b) less rigid stuff to get mad about as a fan

Aside from three last books (the so-called Great Tales) I am not familiar with any Middle Earth history, so I'm kinda looking forward to what this show is gonna do
McMurdo
McMurdo - 2/4/2022, 10:38 AM
@MrDandy - I can confirm that PARTS of the Silmarillion are being adapted for this show, probably most as pilot set up. But the Tolkien Estate did sign off on limited parts of the book being used. We have set photos of Galadriel and other cast members literally reading Simarillion whilst they wait in between shoots
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/4/2022, 11:57 AM
@McMurdo - I’m sure parts of the history will come into play. A big part of the forging of the rings of power was due to Sauron being a mayar to the valar of forging. That’s how he knew how to help create them. So I agree some of the history will come into play

The show could just be called 'The Rings of Power'. Having 'The Lord of the Rings' in there too is just redundant.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/3/2022, 11:57 AM
Also with the title, Rings of Power, I’d assumed this would be the forging of the rings and Sauron’s war with the elves to claim them. These character posters seem to be teasing the people who get the rings so maybe it follows more after Celebrembor’s death and the forging of the one ring and the fall of the ring bearers?

Hmm. Interested to see a trailer.

@MrDandy - Fall if Numenor confirmed
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/4/2022, 11:59 AM
@McMurdo - I’d assume they do that as it’s own miniseries. Maybe it will be part of this series but that would really work as it’s own great standalone story. Fall of Numinore is such a compelling story.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 2/5/2022, 11:16 AM
@MrDandy - no, Fall of Numenor is confirmed they had the biggest water tank in the history of tv/film on that set. We will actually see child sacrifice by Numenorians who are worshiping Morgoth and Sauron in fair form with the ear of the King. We will also see the r invasion of the undying lands
pyramosteu
pyramosteu - 2/3/2022, 12:01 PM
Hopefully they are not trying to replicate a Game of Thrones style show. This should be more fantasy
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/3/2022, 12:04 PM
@pyramosteu - yeah. They don’t need to replicate Game of Thrones when they already have the perfect template for this series. It’s called Lord of the Rings. Adding a lot of cursing, sex, and violence like GoT would be a disservice to the source and Tolkien.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/3/2022, 12:29 PM
@Waddles - id say that’s a good assessment. A lot of Song of Ice and Fire was meant to play off the common fantasy tropes that Lord of the Rings more of less engrained into the genre
SerKurtWagner
SerKurtWagner - 2/3/2022, 12:58 PM
@MrDandy - I don't really think that's what the OP means - More in the sense of not trying to ground it like GOT and fully embracing the High Fantasy elements.

That said, it also doesn't need to be overloaded with cursing and sex just to seem "edgy."

@dragon316 - Hrmmm what I can tell this new series is going to be based more on and around books rather then movies but i'm not 100% sure on that tho so please don't hold me to that statement of mine lol.
