Neil Gaiman On The Sandman TV Series: It's Still Not Definite

Despite the recent tweet from Geoff Johns which suggested that a show based on Neil Gaiman's acclaimed comic series was definitely in the works, the author himself does not seem quite as confident..

It's happening, it's not, it is, it..might be. In this blog entry from Neil Gaiman the author sounds less sure about the prospect of a Sandman TV show than DC chief Geoff Johns did. But confirms that it is something are trying to get off the ground at least..

I saw a bunch of press about whether there is or isn't a Sandman TV series: as far as I know, nobody has actually optioned SANDMAN as a TV series from DC Comics, who own it. Eric Kripke (of Supernatural fame) pitched his approach to DC and to me last year, and we liked it and we liked him, but it didn't feel quite right at that point, so we passed. I think that this year the people at DC Comics (and me) will talk to a lot of people who want to make a Sandman TV series, and if we find the perfect person with the perfect way of treating the material, it'll happen. And otherwise it won't.

So now we know why things didn't take off with Kripke anyway. Lets just hope they DO find that perfect person and this doesn't end up in development Hell again.

Of course it wont work !! Jesus !!
Sandman, which is probably the best comic ever written, should NEVER (not now at least) be adapted into a TV series, it wouldn't work. The network would have some pretty GIGANTIC balls to even try to adapt the series, let alone make it work. Don't, just don't touch it dude. It won't work.

It depends on what you like Bob..It took me awhile to get into his stuff but now I really love it. It's like fairy tales, mythology, comic books and a horror movie rolled into one.

They said LOTR couldn't work, they said Watchmen couldn't work, they say everything CAN'T work. And it can. Will it please everyone? No, but that doesn't mean it can't be a solid adaptation.

Bob, it's the greatest comic ever written. Period.

yeah it could work with right type of people involved. But Sandman should be left alone, not every thing has to be adapted

if your goin to read it, pick up vol 5 first, its the best introduction to the series. vol 1 is good, but not the best starting point.

also I think Lucifer is a better series.

It was an amazing series! Definitely one of my favorites, and I've read it dozens of times from beginning to 'end'. I hope the show will happen, but it has to capture the unique feeling that the comic book had. The writing has to be excellent.

@RorMachine-I've never read this either and my wife and I are both wanting to just because everyone on this site raves about it. As seamuskeaneart suggested, IS vol 5 the best one to start with?

Also, never heard of the series Lucifer? Can anyone tell me what it's about and what particular book I should start with that one?

@SpiderBat-I agree, Preacher IS one of the BEST series around! Other than The Walking Dead, I've yet to find another series to replace it. S'why my wife and I are interested in Sandman.

Preacher, I dunno about starting at anywhere but the beginning! Granted the artwork in the earlier issues wasn't great and that can turn off some people. But my advice is just start from the start.

I think that if the mood and theme of some story is kept (not the same but true to the source), of course it can be converted to another format. Of course we'll have our preferences (Lotr was perfect, for a movie adaptation, but nothing compares to the books, IMO), but the thought of bringing the sight of such a deep comic to a wider audience is why I think these convertions are worth the try.
