Although POTC: On Stranger Tides doesn't arrive in US theaters til midnight tonight, it has officially opened up in many international theaters today. And it's already hitting high above its predecessors (despite being the most critically panned of the series already), making a total of $18.5 million today. From The Hollywood Reporter:

First day offshore box office for the fourth title in the lucrative Pirates series produced by Jerry Bruckheimer beats by nearly 50 percent the comparable opening day tally of the third title in the franchise, 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which opened in 16 foreign territories.

Biggest single market for Tides in 3D was Russia, where the opening day registered $5 million, which Disney described as a record first day in the market. The figure was 80 percent above the debut day recorded by At World’s End, which is the top foreign grosser so far of the Pirates titles with an overseas tally of $654 million.

In the U.K., Tides recorded $3.2 million in its opening day, $3.3 million in France (38 percent above the comparable At World’s End figure in the market), $1.7 million in Italy and $1.3 million in Sweden, the biggest first day figure ever in the market.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails into US theaters tomorrow!

Great to see Pirates doing well and I'm going to watch it today. Sadly, Thor will die this weekend but it has already beaten Hulk's box office numbers. So I guess it can easily reach up to a happy 500 MIL in the end.

@ Intruder

How dare you compare POTC with Twilight and Transformers. Like R888 said, [frick] you.

I'm stoked for this movie, and I don't really care if people tear it apart before they even see it. For me, itll be great. If I could just get a Jurassic Park 4 by Spielberg I'd be even happier, but I heard its dead in the water now, so I'll settle with more Pirates haha.

For real. Who gives a damn if the critics don't like it. The movies are awesome, and critics are hard to please anyway. POTC is amazing. I wanna go back on the Disney World ride :P

I eventually rented the first Pirates movie on DVD. I really didn't understand the big deal about it, but I liked it. So, I went to the theater to see the second one and I liek that one the most. The third one was overly ambitious and it was way too long not to be better than it was. Davey Jones Locker was especially dissapointing. And I feel a little insulted by the 1st grade logic that if people love Jack Sparrow, then multiple Jack Sparrows will be even better. Amazing final battle though.

The new film is taking a beating critically and it's probably at 20% on the tomatoe-meter by now (yikes!). I'll probably still go see it because I'm so familiar with the character. I have to see what he's up to.

I think Pirates and TRANSFORMERS win because there's nothing else like them. No hitman, superheroes, kung fu, race cars, cowboys, bounty hunters, tough guys, ninjas or aliens- organic, slimey, typical aliens for those of you who are about to say "Er duyee, Tramformersh er Aley yens. Udeee.."

@Intruder Mayeb you need some imagination. Or maybe a sense of humor. But in the mean time shut the hell up.
