Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides and Lone Ranger nearly directed by the Hughes Brothers

MTV has this exclusive interview with the directors of 'Book of Eli'

The Twin Tag Team of Albert and Allen Hughes were asked to direct "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "The Lone Ranger." When director of the the first three POTC,Gore Verbinksi, dropped out of the franchise in April and before director of Memoirs of a Geisha,Rob Marshall, has signed on. The director-brothers met with Johnny Depp who starred on their 2001 CBM movie "From Hell" and producer extraordinaire Jerry Bruckheimer to discuss boarding the two big Disney flicks.

"That right there we had to entertain for a minute, one, because it came from Johnny and, two, because it came from Johnny," said Allen. "Johnny is one of the most lovely people you could encounter in this godforsaken business, and if he asked us to jump through fire, we'd do it."

Said Albert, "We were thinking, 'We're not those guys, but if Johnny wants us to do it, we'll talk to Johnny. He's cool.' We're seriously going to consider anything he says to us."

"It was just bad timing because we were in the middle of editing 'Eli,'" explained Allen. "When we fall in love with something, we're in love. It's like cheating on your woman to go, 'Oh, let's go start dating someone else.' That wasn't gonna happen. But it was so much appreciated to be in a room with Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny and be talking about that."

Then talks went to Lone Ranger were Depp is attach as the sidekick Tonto.

"We had to think about it because it's Johnny," said Allen. "But then it's Jerry Bruckheimer too. He has to make the decision and Johnny has to make the decision and even if Johnny wants to work with us, there are other octopus legs to that thing."

In the end it didn't work out but the Hughes brother and Depp expects that they could work with each other again.

"We all want to work together again," said Allen. "We just have to find the right thing

I enjoyed the POTC series even with its flaws. So, I'm still looking forward for the next installment even though we have a different director at the helm.

With Lone Ranger I'm just intrigued what Depp would bring on the character of Tonto.

-ACCESS out. Godspeed and MABUHAY!

Why not cast Depp as the Lone Ranger and get a REAL Native American Actor to play Tonto? What is this, 1953?
