Stephen King's The Stand Getting The Big Screen Treatment

Stephen King's The Stand Getting The Big Screen Treatment

What is considered by many to be King's masterpiece is heading to the big screen courtesy of Warner Bros and CBS..

If you have never read The Stand, do so. Immediately. You may remember the ABC mini series back in 1994 with Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe and Molly Ringwald among others. It ran over 6 hours and even that didn't manage to cram near enough in. So I have no idea how this planned feature film is going to do it, although word is that it has not been decided if the novel will be adapted into one, or multiple movies.

THR report..

Warner Bros. and CBS Films are teaming to adapt the novel, which in many ways set the bar for a generation of post-apocalyptic stories and influenced works ranging from TV's Lost to music group Anthrax.

Mosaic and Roy Lee are producing.

The companies will co-develop and co-produce the feature film, with CBS having the option to participate in co-financing. Warners will handle worldwide marketing and distribution.

Marvel have been running a comic adaptation to great acclaim although I haven't had the chance to check it out yet. No word on director, cast etc for now of course but we will keep you posted. Apparently Stephen King will be involved in some capacity.

The Marvel series of The Stand is incredible. Definitely one of the best graphic novels I've read if you can call it that

The miniseries was great but the ending was terrible -SPOILERS- it literally breaks the rule of Deus Ex Macina (I may have misspelled that -I'm on my phone & can't check) hich means "Machines of (the) God(s)" meaning when something happens that can only be the act of a god and accounts for how a story wraps up and is usually used to wrap up plot holes and as a rule, should never be used. In The Stand (the miniseries, at least; I haven't read the book) it actually has the "hand of god" come down to stop what's about to happen (the missle).

Unfourtunate weak story telling (whoever was responsible for it) from what was otherwise a real good piece of work. Hopefuly a movie can do a better job of the wrap up.

Foxforce, haha, yeah I remember that bit in the series. It actually does happen that way in the book, but it's described a lot less literally if you know what I mean? Just another example of things in books/comics not always translating directly to screen.

the hand of god didnot stop the missle, in the book. The missle goes off creating a mushroom cloud and killing everyone there. Been awhile since I've seen the tv movie, but I think it was pretty much the same

With all the advancements in sfx since then this movie has potential to be great. Though I think it'll be difficult to find relpacements for some of the actors. Can't think of anyone else that could be Stu other than Gary Sinease, but I'm sure there's someone out there.

by far one of my favorite Novels. the comic does a great job adapting it! The mini series was great but it is now dated (still classic though) In my opinion it has to be at least three movies, or if they want to spoil us fans make it 4 seeing as how i believe the book was broken into four parts.
Do it justice guys!

I'm definitely excited about this. I loved the book and mini-series. I didn't actually know they were doing a comic for it, I'm gonna have to check that out.

@ Ror: I know what you mean. Got to say... I'll definitely be in the theatre to see this. It's good news. They should get Frank Darabont to direct if he has the time away form The Walking Ddead- he's translated some of the best King works on screen.

I've always wondered if Randall Flagg was the same person in THE STAND, THE DARK TOWER, and EYE'S OF THE DRAGON. It always seemed like a neat idea, but will that be ignored for the films?

@ FoxForce5 - Stephen King actually wrote the screenplay, based on his novel. The book more or less ends the same, but it makes more sense.

@ dellamorte1872 - Yeah, Larry was a better character in the book. Nick Andross had more of a presence in the book too. I thought they pretty much nailed Stu though.

@ RedeyeJedi - Yes, Flagg is the same character in all the books. He sometimes goes by other names too in stories that you'll have read; Walter O'Dim, Marten Broadcloak etc.

It won't be a 2 hour movie (think Return of the King length), and I don't think Frank Darabont should direct it. Broaden your mind. Danny Boyle could make it work, or David Russell.

They're doing a movie? How can you cram that story in a movie? The mini-series was toned down a lot, the most memorable thing about it being the intro in the first episode with Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper". Hopefully they'll do justice to the book and use the same actor that ends up playing the man in black to play Flagg. That would be cool.

The guy they cast as Flagg in this film, should also be cast in dark tower.

If they did that it would be frakkin awesome but it's doubtful. After all although they are essentially the same entity, they are supposed to be different aspects of him. I did enjoy the mni series but it wasn't consistent and there were some horribly cheesy bits too. I agree with Ry on Gary Sinise being a great Stu though.

I'm a huge, huge stephen king fan, reading his latest book right now, and as hyped as I should be to hear this, I can't be totally, because I think the stand is too complex in storyline to adequately adapt to a single movie. the movie would have to be around 4 hours long, and that still probably wouldn't be enough time to properly explain all the subplots to the storyline.

I'd go see it, especially to see the scene where the guy has to go through the Lincoln tunnel in the dark to get to New Jersey(my imagination had me up all night just thinking about that).

On a similar note, what happened to the big screen version of IT? that's the one they need to do asap, that's gonna be crazy!

Why are people so upset with the hand of god ending? we can believ what the devil does in the story but not what god can do in the story. I am excited for this, i love the book and the tv movie.

There is simply no way in hell that one movie, even a three-plus hour one, can begin to scratch the surface of The Stand. If we were talking like three movies, that might work. As for the Hand of God, that's what the whole thing was leading up to- the ultimate victory of good over evil. This is one of my all-time favorite books (especially the expanded version), but one film? I'll pass. The one good thing that could come from this would be if it got more people to read the book.

And because others are doing it: My top 5 Stephen King books: 1) The Stand, 2) Firestarter, 3) The Shining, 4) Salem's Lot, 5) Different Seasons- every story in that collection is pure greatness.
RyKnow
RyKnow - 2/1/2011, 9:03 AM
I've only read the expanded version of the book and there's a lot of information you wouldn't need in a film. I think it'd need to be the same length as Return of the King or Once Upon A Time in America, but still, you wouldn't need to include everything. Stephen King himself said he more or less based the original mini-series screenplay on the shorter version of the book as a lot of stuff that goes on is just character events and doesn't have anything to do with the overall plot. Subplots like Fran's wedlock pregnancy at the beginning, the inclusion of uneccassary character's like Fran's Mother and Rita Blakemoor, the female zoo scenario. The only thing I'd expand on is Trashcan Man's madness which is explored better in the book (this would be good as it is him who's partly responsible for the destruction of Flagg).
It's a fantastic book, I'm just saying as a film adaption there'd be a lot you could throw away without ruining the end product.

P.S. This isn't Marvel, no silly character crossovers.

And top 5 Stephen King books;

'Salem's Lot (first book to scare the s**t out of me)
Wizard & Glass (best of the Dark Tower books)
The Stand (obviously lol)
The Dark Half (because George Stark kicks arse)
The Dead Zone (it's got an effective, simple plot)

@ryknow, silly character crossovers? King's Dark Tower links many of his books togeteher. From It and the stand to Hearts in Atlantis. So why shouldn't they take the chance to establish a Kingverse.

I'm just finishing it now, [frick]ing awesome book.

it needs to be a trilogy, theres just too much that needs to be shown.

Part I. Captain Trips
Part II. On the Border
Part III. The Stand

I've dreamed of this for a long time, and with at least two movies I feel like it can be done. It really just comes down to the casting and the director. Gary Oldman for Flagg!

Fantastic. Get Frank Darabont to direct. And make sure you get in contact with Ron Howard and arrange for The Stand and The Dark Tower to be tied together. Call Guillermo del Toro and get him working on the film version of IT. Happy days.

RyKnow - 2/2/2011, 2:04 AM
@ Spilox - First Marvel created a cinematic universe, than people expected a DC cinematic universe, now you want a Stephen King cinematic universe. C'mon, be serious. What is it with cinematic universes these days. People expect everyone to do it now, just because Marvel did it. Besides, they've already made a ton of Stephen King films that haven't acknowledged a "Kingverse".
I reckon in The Dark Tower they'll do away with the Flagg character and replace him with one of his other appearences; Walter or Marten. Flagg only has a minor part in The Dark Tower anyway (mainly getting eaten to death by Mordred). Glad your enjoying the book though dude (at least Nick gets laid in the book lol!!).

@ soberchimera61 - It'd be easier and a lot cheaper to condense the book into a four hour film. As I said earlier, a lot happens in the book that you wouldn't really need for a film. And with The Dark Tower on it's way and the ammount of attention that's gonna get (particularly as it's a Ron Howard project), I don't think they'd take the gamble of making another King series.

Eric Bana for Flagg!

@ Spilox - Are we on about the same book here, I was talking about the novel of The Stand. I don't know if you're on about one of the comics/graphic novels of The Stand, or the 7th Dark Tower book. Help me out, I'm confused dude :D
