THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA Will Be Rebooted For Netflix In A New Series Of Movies And Shows

C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia novels are being adapted yet again, this time for Netflix.

We've seen live-action takes on the beloved fantasy adventure stories before, both on British television and in Disney's three movies (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspin, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader), which proved to be divisive among fans of the mythology.

Now, the streaming giant plans to bring us new takes on the books for “both stellar feature-length and episodic programming.”

“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, in a statement released by Netflix. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”

A big-screen adaptation of the fourth book in the saga, The Silver Chair, was scheduled to commence production this year under director Joe Johnston, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now.

What do you guys think of this news? Will Netflix do The Chronicles of Narnia justice?

@Supes17 - i tend to give cg on netflix a pass depending in the show. Series of Unfortunate Events because how goofy the show is I dont mind it. Something like Death Note though has no excuse.

@Supes17 - Is the CGI of ASOUE really bad, though? It thought it was more of a certain style which fits the show perfectly, if you'd ask me. I am not a big fan of the show, though.

@Supes17 - I love Series of Unfortunate Events. It's true to the spirit of the novels and I really like how they drew inspiration from the style of Wes Anderson

Not a fan of the series, but this sounds good. I think book adaptations work best with television. They can do the stories justice without having to cram it or take things out in order for it to fit a 2 hour window.

As much as I love the Harry Potter movies, I would love for a 7 season series that more accurately depicts the books in the future. The far future though.

If they plan on covering all of it, I wonder if they will go by the "internal chronology" instead of by publication order. I can see the Magicians Nephew as a Netflix movie or part of a miniseries rather than a stand-alone film. Lewis did not go to the details of his mythology like Tolkien did, so I wonder how the series will show a fully developed world. I hope they do it justice. I liked the Walden Media series, but they did decrease with quality as they went on.

Neat, maybe they'll actually finish the story this time.

Lots of potential in this format to allow the artists to take...their...time!

Love this series, really wish Disney didn't screw the pooch with Voyage of the Dawn Treader. If they did it right and kept the franchise we'd have gotten Silver Chair and probably Horse & His Boy by now. Perfect timing to cast the original Pevensies as their older selves in that book too. Too bad.

@Super12 - I don't think Disney did Dawn Treader. I think it was Fox.

I remember watching the behind the scenes of the first Narnia and the craft that went into that movie is astounding! The mix of practical and digital effects are almost seemless and they still hold up today!

The extended edition is the best film so far. The second and third film failed to surpass what the first did. Good movies but I prefer the LOTR trilogy by far!

This is a property that really lends itself to an animated Walt Disney feature.

I can't believe they've never gone down that road with this franchise, yet.

It's a modern fairy tale! It's got talking animals in it! You don't even have to add the talking animals, they're already there!

So much for original content. Hollywood/ streaming services are just re-hashing the same stuff. Why not take a chance on some rookie screenwriters with genuine great concepts?

GeneralZod - 10/3/2018, 12:37 PM
@GothamSon - Because they are scared of taking a risk and losing money. The safe play is to reboot and repeat, over and over. It sucks.

How are they possibly going to have the budget for this? Especially if they are also producing a high budget Witcher series.
