Viggo Mortensen Still Hopeful For A Return As Aragorn In THE HOBBIT Trilogy

He wasn't in the last one and it's highly unlikely that we'll see him in the next instalment either, but Viggo Mortensen has now expressed interest in reprising the role of Aragorn should director Peter Jackson decide to fill in the gaps between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies.

It's fair to say that Aragorn was easily one of the most popular characters in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and with many of the actors from that series returning for Peter Jackson's take on The Hobbit, it seems like a missed opportunity not to bring him back too. The main problem is of course the fact that the character simply didn't appear in that story! However, as Jackson made the decision to turn his adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel into a trilogy, the possibility of a return for Aragorn thereby seems far more likely. Here's what actor Viggo Mortensen had to say about exactly that in a recent interview with Total Film Magazine. "Would I play Aragorn again? Sure, if it seemed sensible to do so. He's not in the book of The Hobbit but if they're working with the appendices they may be intending to bridge the 60-year Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings gap. I think I would have heard by now so I have to assume... But Peter Jackson is famous for his reshoots, so you never know!" As great as it would be to see Aragorn back on the big screen, he makes a good point - it does seem a little late for the director to suddenly call him back for a surprise appearance! Besides, regardless of how great it would be to see him, it would be a shame for them to throw in Aragorn just for the sake of it! What do you guys think?

I'm a big aragorn fan. He was my first crush but IDK if he should return

I also had a big crush on Aragorn (but later I discovered I was straight). I think he could definitely return if Mortensen isn't too old now.

Why not, they gave frodo a cameo appearnce, why not book end this trilogy with a cameo of Aragorn

Maybe have Gandalf back at the Prancing Pony or another pub talking to someone bout Saurons return and telling him he needs his help in the coming battle...then show Aragorn wearing his hood in a dark corner as he was when he ran into Frodo in The Fellowship :]

I don't think Legolas was in the Hobbit either and he's in it (though it makes more sense since he;s Thranduil's son)

That statement doesn't really say "hopeful to play Aragorn again" to me. Sounds to me like someone asked if you would play Aragorn again and he said "sure". Seems a reasonable response to that question. Not that this is the same thing, but this story kind of reminds me of those months of "The guy who played the thumbs up alien in that space commercial in the background of the scene where Anakin chased the shape shifter in Episode II says he's up for being in the new Star Wars trilogy." At least Aragorn was a main character in LOTR.

No need for Aragorn in the Hobbit. None. Love the guy but it would take away from the Bobbit too much. The ONLY way they could would be either in Rivendell on Bilbo's return journey or simply in the wilderness watching over Bilbo as he returns home, maybe by Gandalf's request. That's the only way I could see him in it.

@earmunzo define "he's made shit lately". Eastern Promises, The Road, A Dangerous Method are good films.

Isn't The Hobbit like 60 years before LOTR? Wouldn't that mean that Aragorn isn't even born yet??

He still hasn't been called to reprise his role? I'm so sorry Viggo but even the actors that didn't appear in An Unexpected Journey have already been cast.I still think they may call him but...well,we'll see.

@imadick - Aragorn is not half-elf, he's of Numenorean descent. Those men lived longer because they had been blessed by the gods in the West.

I am usually against bringing back old actors but I would love to see him in it.. he IS part of a race of men blessed with long life and as Jackson is doing 3 movies I could see it happening..There a few events with Aragon and Gandalf that takes place before fellowship..like how did he know the hobbits would be in the pracy pony? Gandalf told him of course!! Also a backstory on Aragon would great as well..via spin off or in the Hobbit part 3 or something...like Wolverine he is a bad ass with a past clouded in mystery. Jackson!!! Make it happen!!

The14thAvenger - 4/14/2013, 3:53 AM
he was one of the best parts of the trilogy, he should definitely be cast in the last hobbit film. in fellowship you think hes just there by chance, but in reality gandalf knew that sauron would be after the hobbits so he sent rangers of in all different directions to find and protect the hobbits, and it was the king of men who found them, so to make that connection in the films would be awesome and would make rewatching the lotr even more meaningful

nothing happened in the hobbit, it puts george lucas.. err i mean peter jackson to shame. i actually really liked lotr and king kong but this is just too much, 3 hours of nothing, and there are 2 more movies based in one book. this guy is either crazy or a son a bitch, or both
i dont give a crap if aragorn is in it or not, do what you want..

When the Hobbit takes place Aragon is somewhere between 25-30 years old and living in Rivendell. They could have easily had him appear in the first movie when they came to see about the map.

@VinzClortho aragorn was over 80 years old in lotr, it is mentioned in the lotr films
he belongs to a long living branch of humans, but not as long as elfs

I would love to see a quick shot of Viggo as Aragorn again. Like the article says Pete loves doing pick-ups. So I have hope. I don't expect a younger Aragorn but an older Aragorn or Aragorn doing LOTR time period would be cool like Frodo and old Bilbo. And while I love my baby, Frodo to death. I think Viggo's appearance would serve more significance than his. So Fingers crossed!!!!
